NEW HIP BAR ALERT!…read more Ever since Hong Kong jumped on the "overpriced premium craft cocktail" bandwagon, I can't get enough of it! Too bad my wallet hates it. From Quinary to The Woods, Envoy to Baobei, this is one of the best ones. Also commending $150~ a drink. Right across from Tsui Wah, you don't have to PK down LKF to get your munchies anymore. Conveniently in the same building as Honi Honi and close to MTR exit D, this place will only get more and more packed. There is a large bar area where the bartenders work their magic and various couches, and tables that can be moved to accomodate larger parties. The décor did not wow me, it's more of a high-end no-frills type of place; it's comfortable while exuding class. Fortunately, even with the high industrial ceilings, the noise was kept at a moderate level. Their cocktail menu is small but it's quality, not quantity! The presentation of the drinks are rather understated (you may not be able to tell its crafted by a mixologist without taking a sip) its flavours are refined and superior to its more ostentatious counterparts (aka Quinary and Envoy) Every cocktail I got seemed to be better than the previous one, and the alcohol flavour is skillfull masked by its infusion! This was truly a place where you can close your eyes and pick any cocktail and it will come out tasting good, albeit strange or different. Not a place where you are drinking syrup-water. I'm not sure if they change their selections from time to time but here were the ones I tried and also highly recommend: THE CORIANDER $140 As a lover of coriander and hater of ginger, I was blessed with a subtle ginger taste. It's somewhat herbal and refreshing. I didn't find the coriander taste to be that distinct. JALAPENO $160 Can't take the heat? You control the amount of jalapeno put in your drink. I'm not a wuss so I dumped the whole thing in for the extra kick. Best jalapeno drink ever! MARMALADE $150 Don't underestimate this jam jar sized drink. It's flavourful and packs a good punch of alcohol in. If you down this or you may just start slurring sooner than you expect! It's a cognac based, and while I'm usually not a fan, this was truly a bitter sweet drink. SMOKEY JOE $180 An old-fashion drinker? Whisky connoisseur? Manhattan sipper? Look no farther. I'm not big on whisky so I only had a sip, but it's a very solid drink (Or so I've been told). BEETROOT $140 This was a sweet drink, not a beetroot fan but it's one of those fruity sweet drinks that most girls love. I could not discern the beetroot from this. GIN & TONIC TEA $130 Don't like the taste of alcohol, this drink is made for you! It's a more typical cocktail but it's so good, you think you're drinking a mocktail. Infused with passionfruit, the sweetness is not overpowering like what you get at upstairs café. Gin is one of the most tasteless alcohol as well, so be careful if you're a one shot wonder! I'm not actually an alcoholic and I did not actually order all those (I only had 3 to myself). After 3, I had a real good buzz. SPAM FRIES $90 Steep, a bit too salty but oh so good! I've eaten my share of peanuts and happily contributed to the mounts of shells over the last few months. It's definitely kind of fun. I usually bring a drinking buddy or two to pregame here before heading to a few other nearby spots for food and more drink. Fatt's has a lot of tallboy action for stands, which are good for tall folks but that's really about it. There isn't a whole lot of room for group drinking action, but who really cares when you're standing on a bunch of empty peanut shells anyway? Look, it's not going to be the best gourmet cooking in the world, this is British pub food that we are talking about after all. It is mainly beige foods that have been baked or fried, but there is a very large selection of dishes that will make you pine for England's green and pleasant lands, including; proper steak and kidney pudding, fish and chips, bangers and mash, cottage pie, and a selection of true British delights like pasta and chicken parmigiana - ahem, err yeah! The meals a-la-carte will set you back about HKD150, but the portions are generous. For the best value, come here for lunch, where a main meal with soup or salad starter, will set you back around HKD70. Again, it's not the best you will have, but for a tasty quick bite, it is perfectly good. Be warned, with such a good value meal deal, the HK office workers come here in their droves, so you should book for lunch. My only gripe about this place is the serious lack of English speaking staff. Try asking for a lager shandy, and the spotty 12 year old kid will look at you blankly as though you have just ask for the secret to The Masons. Try and get the nice Filipino manageress to serve you. She at least knows the difference between the steak and kidney pudding , and the steak and kidney pie. The ambiance feels distinctly pub-like and some of the staff is German speaking, which I've found in most of the bartenders. If only everyone was wearing lederhosen, this could be the ultimate (but tight space!) Oktoberfest destination. In general, I enjoy drinking here. They have a good selection of beers, German and others, on tap and available in bottle / can form. There are plenty of stools at the bar and front area is open enough to call this place outdoor friendly. The bartenders make for interesting conversation and are adept at recommending quality beers. If there is any fault, it would be the food. The menu is broken down to soups, salads and classic mains, there is even a dedicated section to cold / hot sausages. And while most things are certainly reminiscent of dishes I've had in Deutschland, none have captured the magic of anything I've had. This is asking a lot for Hong Kong obviously, where western food tends to be lackluster and sadly the case applies here as well (specifically: the goulash, wurst plate, knuckle hocks, meat loaf, schnitzel). It wasn't all bad of course, I did appreciate the mash potatoes. Sadly, a delicious side does not make up for a string of mediocre mains. Given the major lack of presence amongst locals and the general feel of the place, it goes without saying Biergarten is a likely option for many non-Chinese tourists. Well, it was a pretty awesome bar, but that shouldn't be all that surprising since he does happen to have a pretty good taste when it comes to bars. Look, it is technically not a rooftop bar, namely because it isn't on top of a building, at least in the sense that the two IFC buildings rise up to either side of it. However, it does have an outdoor area, and thus it has a pretty awesome atmosphere, standing in the shadow of one of those buildings, and a great place to spend a Friday night (or at least it was).
