This was tough. 4.5 stars really, but doesn't deserve a 4. In this place, Bastonge, looking around, I was expecting bad tourist food everywhere. What I lucked into, was this place.
The good.
1. Classic French 'country' service. Formal French would have required bigger tables, but I knew from minute 1 they had the service and presentation nailed when I saw white cloth napkins, water and wine goblets, and staff in aprons. Service followed suit. Great presentation. Very professional.
2. All the food was excellent. Oysters, steak, wild boar, deserts, and the food I saw with other guests. Portions just right. Properly cooked. Just like the table settings and staff. Could have used a seasonal green, but we should have ordered a salad.
3. Prices. Not bad. There is a lot of other places here, maybe competition keeps them down. Surf and turf $29 eur? And good organic local beef? When I saw the prices, I thought the food would be bad. Not so.
That is why they get 5 stars.
The Bad
1. They treated us like boorish American tourists. We expected it, this is close to
France, I expected nothing less. But they were friendly and did have a single menu in English.
2. Very very limited wine list. Added to the fact that we were ignorant American tourists meant they didn't want to help much in the selection process to boot - but they tried. And smiled. But it was hard for them!
I would not hesitate to go back, in fact, with the menu they had I would not likely even bother trying somewhere else. read more
