    Hot chocolate and beer flight
    Kim V.

As we checked out the sites in Bruges, we saw this near Jan van Eyckplein. What caught our attention was the mussel special with frites. It was a chilly afternoon, with no sun in sight, so when the host/server popped out to invite us in as we looked over the menu, we decided to accept the invitation. The bf ordered the beer flight and the mussel special, while I ordered the french onion soup and a hot chocolate. My soup was nice and hot and was tasty. The hot chocolate was divine. Not too many complaints on the beer flight. Our only disappointment is that it looks like they don't serve fresh mussels, or if they do, it's a very small amount. None of the shells had abductor muscles (those white parts that keep the shell together). This also implies that they may reuse the shells. We glanced over at another patron's order and also noticed that none of her shells had them either. The service is fine and it's a cute establishment, otherwise.

Not a bad little place to catch lunch. The staff were friendly and not at all pushy or overbearing. Both of which you might expect in a touristy city. I was in town with the mother in law. She gets cranky if her belly starts to rumble. So to keep her from becoming a harpy I took her into this establishment. The beers came quick, the Flemish stew that the MIL was decreed to be tasty. Although the spoon was designed to be used for a right handed person instead of a south paw, which of course my mother is. The frites I ordered originally didn't come with any sauce. Though this was quickly rectified once I let someone know. Maybe they assumed I was going to dip them in the MIL's stew... Price was reasonable and I didn't feel ripped off. Which I'm not sure I could of other establishments closer to the grand place.

A truly delightful little restaurant just out of the centre of Bruges in a very picturesque square. I can highly recommend the traditional Flemish Stew for a winter warmer, certainly one of the best stews I have had in recent memory. We booked a table earlier in the day, not actually necessary even though it was a Friday night, however a real bonus as the proprietor reserved the table in the window. The homely atmosphere was quiet, but not awkwardly so. Not sure I can fault this restaurant anywhere, maybe the starters were a little limited for a non-fish-eater...

    Steak and fries. Lunch special

Negative star experience here. Inedible food, rude waiter, veiled threats of violence. It's all here folks. I'll be succinct. Small interior, large patio, all Middle Eastern wait staff. I ordered a medium cooked steak and frites. Took all of five minutes to be ready. The steak was impossible to cut with a knife. I moved the knife back and forth like a saw and managed to cut the steak open revealing a reddish and pink center, surrounded by brown/grey mystery meat, punctuated by voluminous gristle. See pic. Chewy would be an understatement. But the worst thing was how dry it was: an almost complete absence of moisture. In short, it was inedible. I told the waiter the steak was too dry and tasted like microwaved. He said he would talk to the chef and then took the dish back. The head waiter then came over and asked me what the problem was. I repeated what I said to the first waiter. The head waiter said that person (i.e., person who took my order, brought out the food, and then took the food back) was not a waiter but a student. It didn't make any sense. So I asked for the bill and a discount. The head waiter immediately got serious and said that the steak was what I ordered. I got irritated and asked for the bill again, raising my voice. I added that it was the worst steak I had ever tasted and that it was obviously microwaved. My voice was audible to the other customers as the restaurant was quite small. He then told me repeatedly to "be quiet" and added "if i weren't working now, I wouldn't allow you to talk to me that way." I was puzzled by this because I was complaining about the food and nothing was directed at him personally. Again, I requested the bill and a discount. He then said something really bizzare. He said "now be quiet. Don't make me go crazy." As he said it, he covered his mouth with his hand, looked around, and took a deep breath as if to contain himself. I didn't hang around to find out what "crazy" meant. So I asked for the bill and paid in full even though 90% of the dish was uneaten (inedible). And got the hell out.

    Croquettes and Frites

It was a delicious meal with fabulous service. The restaurant is cozy and clean. Our meal was flawless. Moules in white wine were spectacular. The fries were perfect. We had the creamiest croquettes. Not one complaint. There is a full bar, a nice wine list, and dessert is available. You'll have a great meal in wonderful surroundings.

It checked all the boxes I was looking for - local Belgian cuisine, affordable, close by, and open late. Exactly what you want after a long day of drinking Belgian beers. I didn't realize ribs were such a big deal in Belgium, so I was genuinely excited when I ordered them... only to feel deep disappointment when the server returned to let me know they had just sold out. Luckily, I pivoted to the vol-au-vent and had absolutely no regrets. The chicken was moist and creamy, and the pastry was incredibly flaky and light. Naturally, I paired it with a Trappist ale, which felt mandatory. Cozy, satisfying, and quintessentially Belgian--this spot lived up to the recommendation and then some.

My son loved his beef stew and applesauce. My husband loved his salmon and I absolutely loved my salad! The tomatoes tasted like they were right out of a garden!! It was one of the best salads I've ever had! The restaurant could be good just for a casual dinner or it could also be a nice romantic place to spend time with loved ones! The waiters were very nice and helpful, making recommendations that proved to be amazing!

However do not let this deter you. They are highly efficient and have a system therefore the wait goes fast. Just be sure to be situationally aware. It's along a busy street where a lot of horse carriage rides transit, so don't hang out in the street. Also, be mindful to step aside once you place your order (probably to the left facing the order window, but do not block the walkway that allows the employees to deliver your order. They call out your number and it's hot and fresh. There was no room to sit on the steps/stoops so I stood and enjoyed my waffle. Personally, I feel like one Belgian waffle is sufficient to share between 2 people because it's rich and really sweet if you get the chocolate one. While I enjoyed it and the presentation was excellent, the waffle was very dense and really chewy. But I think that's how they are since it's made from yeast based dough. It's definitely worth the try, just too sweet and too chewy for my preference. Staff were very friendly and kind as well!!
