Mac and cheese - if you need some extra carbs, if you are a pretty bland eater then go right ahead Chicken rice casserole - a bowl of rice with a couple pieces of chicken. Skip it. Peach cobbler - hmmm. Tough one. More cobbler, less peach. Corn bread muffin - you only have a choice between regular and jalapeño. Had a whole lot better. It comes with the plate so you make the decision if you feel like wasting some calories. TBD: white beans, fried okra, banana pudding, coleslaw...I'll let you know the next time we visit. read more

Bishop's is my go to when craving a meat and 3 style lunch in Franklin. Many of the other meat and three style places have unfortunately gone by the wayside (Cool Cafe and Dotson's just to name a few). Being Friday, I knew catfish was one of the meats offered and I always order it made hot (like hot chicken hot). Okra and mashed potatoes rounded out this meal. Everything was seasoned well and tasted very good. It's cafeteria style so you get to choose from many sides. I've been coming to Bishop's occasionally for the past 12 years and I can say it is consistently very solid. Oh and don't pass on the banana pudding, it's made the old fashioned way. The pudding is a vanilla custard made from scratch not this trendy short cut box jello crap or sweetened condensed milk stuff. Popular place and good food. Found they are part of the Hattie B's Hot Chicken franchise so that's a bonus. This is another one of the meat + 3 places that show up on all the places to try when in the area. My wife had the mild chicken tenders with black eyed peas and mac & cheese. She loved her food and the black eyed peas preparation (traditional with pepper vinegar). I had the fried chicken and dressing with gravy and the green beans. I loved the fried chicken. Done right. I didn't like the dressing as it was bland and mushy. Not flavorful at all. The green beans were decent. Our counter server was surly and didn't seem happy to be there so they lose a star for that. I've been curious about the concept of meat and three so I decided to try Bishop's. It's a cafeteria of southern food with massive portions at low prices. This spot was busy, even around 11am on a weekday! The staff was hustling to get through the line and we didn't wait long to order. The employees here were friendly and welcoming. We chose to take our food home, but there are tables if you prefer to dine in. Normally, I'd be a little worried about food safety with a cafeteria line. This spot is so busy and fresh food was constantly being put out on the line. It didn't look like any of the food was sitting for long. The meats and sides rotate by the day. The offerings by day are listed on their website. Plates can be ordered as meat only or meat plus one, two, or three sides. Veggies plates are an option. They even have a family meal option. Cobblers and pies are available for dessert. I would rate the food quality and taste at 3/5. The portions are generous for the price which is why I bumped to a 4/5. It's decent enough for a large, cheap meal. The Fried Chicken was good. It's not the best I've had, but good if you want something quick. The Chicken and Dumplings was good, a little on the soupier side. The sides were my favorite part. The Carrot Soufflé was my favorite with a sugary topping. The Squash Casserole had a nice taste. The Mashed Potatoes were creamy and buttery. The Green Beans had a nice texture and taste. Nothing here is going to be heavily seasoned, just simple flavors. The Pecan Pie was really good. I liked the crust and the flavor of the filling. The Banana Pudding was good, but not the best we've had. This is one of the few spots you'll still be able to get inexpensive takeout. Five star for food, any entree or side. Everything is delicious! I think I've tried most of what's served. My husband & I dine here often bc it's right down the road from our house. They serve different meats and vegetables, based on their daily menu. You go down their line and pick what you want, and they put it on your plate. You pay for what you selected, then go have a seat (if there is one available.) That's why they get a Four star rating. It's crammed packed, especially at lunch hours. This makes it an unpleasant dining experience for me. It's loud, and people are standing in line to order. So, they are too close to my food. If you like your space and low noise level, then I suggest take-out. I'm hoping the owner eventually gets a bigger place. Parking is a pain too! read more

I'm so glad this place was recommended to us. My husband was wanting some Nashville hot chicken. Although the spices on the hot chicken tenders were a bit overwhelming and more dry rub rather than a sauce that we were expecting, it still tasted good. My husband really liked the dressing with cranberry sauce. I just had regular chicken tenders and it was juicy, but the star of my plate was the sweet potatoes!! Best I've had. The jalapeño cornbread wasn't too dry and had a nice spice to it. Okra was cooked perfectly too. I could not believe how affordable they've been able to keep the price as well. The quality is worth more honestly, but don't tell them that so it stays affordable haha The place is small and at lunch time it was packed! Ao we ended up getting ours to go. Ordering is like a cafeteria style. Which I enjoy. I get to see how everything looks and decide if that's what I'm wanting or not. Service... perfect! The people here were so nice and all had a great personality. That's what will make you want to keep coming back. This is a really good meat and three restaurant in the Franklin area. This restaurant is associated with Hattie B's, so you can get Nashville hot chicken as well as other entrees such as pork chops, turkey and dressing, etc. Many hot sides and salads are on the menu, as well as an assortment of pies for dessert. I had the southern fried dark chicken quarter and it was some of the best fried chicken I have had in Tennessee. The mashed potatoes and green beans were good, but my favorite side was the fresh cucumber salad. My husband ordered Nashville chicken tenders, so he had a short wait for his food, but it came out hot and fresh. He enjoyed macaroni and cheese and a slice of chess pie with his meal. With friendly service and good food, we will look forward to visiting Bishop's again when we are in Franklin. read more

The chopped steak is not ground beef patted out, cooked and seared to perfection. Instead it is a nasty salisbury steak like patty. It was gross. The mashed potatoes are instant and the gravy has zero seasoning with no taste at all. The corn muffin was incredibly dense and dry. Sysco slop. And it was not cheap either. Hard to believe it was this low quality. Will not be back. read more

We went Sunday after church and it was packed. Got turkey and dressing. They ran out of sweet potato casserole but had a carrot dish that was delicious. Green beans and corn muffin topped it off. It has been a while since being at this joint. I chose the Fish Almondine (fried fish fillet encrusted with batter and almonds. I enjoyed the crispiness of the outer batter and the flakiness of the fish. But sad there seemed to not be any real seasoning added to this entree. If there was, it was not enough. Had a side of Mac & cheese. Which was very creamy and had a good flavor, just needed a little salt (which I usually never add to any of my meals) to have some taste. Also had a side of green beans. They were cooked well enough but again for me, absolutely no seasoning whatsoever. Sorry but I felt like I was at an old folks nursing home for dinner and they were serving a heart patient meal to me with no salt or no pepper or any kind of seasoning. The only thing that had any flavor was the jalapeno cornbread they served. I gave three stars because my past experience has always been good. Just seems they were having a bad evening this time around. We will see if we make it back anytime soon. But after this meal, it might be awhile. read more

While I landed at 4 stars, my true rating would be 3.5, and here is why... Nostalgic southern spot in Franklin next to the Chick-Fil-A. I really wanted to love this spot, as a Meat & 3 speaks to my soul...however, I was underwhelmed here. I popped in for lunch and ordered the Fried Catfish with fried okra, mac n cheese, and rice casserole. What struck me initially was the portion size - only one piece of catfish, which was below average in size. While the sides were decently portioned, the main dish left a bit to be desired. The catfish and okra were disappointingly dry and chewy, lacking the crispiness and tenderness that I look for in fried southern classics. The mac n cheese was sadly watery and thin, however the chicken, broccoli and rice casserole was solid, and of course the sweet tea was sweet! Service was stellar, as you would expect at a southern joint. While my first go was a bit underwhelming, I am comitted to stopping back by for another round of meats and veggies...as I don't give up on a good southern spot so easily! read more

We enjoyed the southern fried chicken -some chose the hot chicken, too. The sides are a stand out for. Ring simple and tasty. We enjoyed the green beans, the cucumber salad, the carrot casserole (actually almost dessert-like in its texture and spices), mac-n-cheese, ad black eyed peas. We were looking forward to a piece of pie but we had to settle for another day because we tried the meat and 3 so we had no room left. Next time we can try the meat and 2sides so we can try either pecan or chocolate pie, banana pudding, or peach cobbler. Total old-school southern potluck vibes. There wasn't an item on my tray that didn't remind me of good food from many years ago. As such, as a kid/teen I would have never wanted to go out to eat something like this as it wouldn't have seemed to be "restaurant food" to me but now, years later--hey, I don't cook like this and I don't frequent potlucks. So this is comfort food, nostalgia food, and food crafted with care. It's served cafeteria style, but everything was piping hot. I noticed some items (entrees, none of the sides as all seemed to be present) listed on the day's menu that weren't on the buffet and as first-time diners here we weren't sure if you could actually still order them or if once they're gone, they're gone. Anyway--I had the fried chicken (breast quarter), mashed potatoes and gravy, carrot souffle, mac'n'cheese, and a slice of jalapeno cornbread. My spouse had the same (minus the gravy and cornbread) and we split a piece of the fudge pie. Really great mac, the carrot souffle was interesting (but good) and tasted/textured as if sweet potatoes might be mixed in as well. Cornbread had great flavor. Chicken was piping hot. That fudge pie reminded me of the kind my grandmother made when I was little and I've not had it since. If I make it back, I want to try the hot chicken and the okra. Service was super friendly and welcoming. Would be a great carryout spot if I lived in the neighborhood. Only "negatives" I can think of-- totally get not wanting to use real glassware and plates in a location like this, but truly hate styrofoam. Something else would be nice. This was the first time having Meat and Three. We were lured in to Bishop's because they advertised that they had Hattie B's without the line. Well, for a weekend dinner, they actually did have a line, but it moved very fast since most items here are served cafeteria style. Leg Quarter, Medium ($6.50) - For this dish, they take a pre-fried leq quarter from a serving tray in front (note; this is still very fresh because there is a constant stream of customers getting fried chicken - while I was in line, I saw them restocking the fried chicken several times), and take it to the kitchen where they presumably fry it again and add the hot sauce. This is fantastic chicken, super succulent and juicy on the interior, with a nice crisp fry on the exterior. The breading is spread quite evenly throughout the chicken. Medium spicy offers a nice heat level that still allows for the natural flavor of the peppers in the hot sauce to come through. The breading here has an appropriate salt balance and is even a bit sweet. The hot sauce is very well balanced and has a consistent heat. Even the areas that soaked into the slice of white bread underneath retained a similar amount of heat. Just to compare to what I had at Prince's the previous day - the heat level is around the same. Prince's is way saltier. Hattie B's has a nice sweetness that Prince's doesn't have. Prince's doesn't have as even of a coating. Both had equally juicy meat. The sauce that soaked into the bread at Prince's was way hotter. I can't say that one is necessarily better than the other, but I prefer the hot chicken here. The leq quarter here also came with a corn muffin, which was appropriately labeled as corn bread (e.g. not sweet) and a couple of pickles on top. Meat + 3 ($13.50) - Originally wanted the catfish, but they ran out when I got there at 5PM. Instead, I went with the country steak, mac n cheese, lima beans, and squash casserole. The sides served here are very home-style Southern. The fact is there are served cafeteria style, so expectations should be lowered a bit. The lima beans were appropriately cooked and salted. The mac and cheese was creamy and the elbow macaroni was soft but not super mushy. The squash casserole was interesting - I haven't had this before. It's basically just squash cooked in a milky and peppery base. The chicken fried steak was covered with gravy and onions with breading around the same thickness top and bottom as the meat. I was expecting it to have some crunch, but it was soft and tender throughout. We also picked up a Family Pack for some relatives also in town. Bishop's website states you get to choose 1 meat only, but you actually get to choose 4 meats. A good variety! Bishop's is a great choice for Southern-style home cooking. I wouldn't hesitate to visit again. read more

Is this what authentic southern cooking tastes like? I'm from San Francisco, so I wouldn't claim to know southern food as well as anyone from the south. I can say that the fried chicken was tender with crispy skin, the cornbread was moist with a good amount of kick, the Mac and cheese was cheesy and thick, the fries okra had some good crunch and the dressing was super flavorful. All for a little over $13. Much better than the $30 I would need to spend back home! read more

Always a good option for quick take away or a nice meal before a Friday movie. Daily specials help change the menu and the hot chicken has a great range of heat levels. They could go one level higher in my opinion. On line ordering makes quick service and you can specify what time you will get your meal so it is always hot and ready to go. read more

This is my go-to when I need a southern food fix, even over popular places in downtown. I bring out-of-towners here. It is truly not to be missed when you are in Nashville (and particularly when you want some excellent hot chicken or just really darn good fried chicken.) It is cafeteria style with the menu changing up a bit daily. Even if it's busy, I never wait more than 10-15 minutes to get my order, even when they are slammed. My go-to's are the hot chicken (which is one of the few things that is made-to-order and will add 5-7 min to your wait time but is WELL worth it), the fried chicken, and the fried catfish. Yesterday I came in just to get a 4 veggie plate because their sides are that good. If I ever had a choice-last-meal-in-life situation, the carrot soufflé from here would be on my list of things to eat. It is literally the stuff dreams are made of. Other favorites include the fried okra, the mashed potatoes and gravy, and the Mac & cheese. I understand they have bread options besides the rolls, but their rolls are so perfect, it's the only bread item I have ever tried here (they also have cornbread and corn muffins.) Lastly, don't forget to order the banana pudding for dessert. The pies here are good. But the banana pudding is unreal.
