This felt like the Portland of Dallas. Since everyone else is going to talk about the funky, eclectic, communal and hippie vibe, and the 60 independent businesses, I will mention some history: 1. The neighborhood was nicknamed "The Devil's Back Porch" back in the 1920s. I hope that was not a reference to his butt. 2. This was one of the busiest streetcar stops in all of Dallas in the 1930s, which is the reason the shops are close together. 3. The restaurant Paradiso is L shaped because it was built around century-old trees. 4. Bonnie (of Bonnie and Clyde) worked as a waitress in this area before her crime spree began. Rumor has it she needed money to afford the $8 slices of pie at Emporium Pies. Only three things sucked: 1) Parking is difficult on weekends. 2) Cops are everywhere, so don't jaywalk. 3) The people with clipboards asking you to donate to blue whale abortions or whatever are aggressive. read more

My friend and I came here for the Bishop Arts Bazaar which was a lot of fun on a toasty fall day. They have retail parking available that's less than three minutes away walking distance. There was live music, food trucks and plenty of vendors. They had a couple of older model cars on display which was cool. When we entered the bazaar there was a lady there to welcome us to the event which was nice. I enjoyed a refreshing drink at a food truck and got street style tacos from another vendor. The live music was upbeat and complimented the event. We were able to walk around and explore a majority of the vendors. I ended up buying a couple of things from the vendor. The bishop arts bazaar occurs in the fall once a month on Sunday. Attending the bazaar was a lovely way to spend the Sunday afternoon. read more

Well, with our last name being Bishop,we absolutely had to come to the Bishop Arts District! There were so many stores. There were candle stores, chocolate stores, baked goods, gift shops, coffee shops, cafes, wine with book shops, and Pokemon stores. This area was so much fun and there was so much to see, do, and eat. Prices were reflected in the individual stores, some were a good value and others had some high price points. I have to say we stopped in at least 12-15 places and service was great at each place we went. Most of these were local artists and food vendors, so they were invested in people having a great time. I loved it and I would definitely return for more unique and interesting shops. read more

I can make this very quick: this is a consolidated area that is very cool, with lots of restaurants, bars, bookstores, and gift shops. Almost exclusively street parking, and it was CROWDED on a Friday night in early August. It's very cute though, very easy to keep yourself entertained! Our favorite bar is "the wild detectives". Our favorite shop is zsa zsa unique boutique which I have a lot of my artwork displayed in the shop so I may vendor there. This area was recommended to me by everyone I talked to for recommendations when I said I was visiting Dallas. After spending a day here, I can definitely understand why. You can spend hours walking around and looing at everything the Bishop Arts District has to offer. Lots of different kinds of shops and things to see. I really enjoyed my time here with all the small businesses. While not all of them were great, it was still nice to see all the different things being offered. It's interesting to watch a place that was a big part of your childhood, re-emerge like a phoenix from the ashes of economic obsolescence. Although I've chosen not to live here, I'm happy to see the energy and newness developing here. Over the past twenty years, its gone from don't go there after dark, to a travel magazine destination. Ironically today I had traced my side of the family to a great grandfather Xs 10 in France. His descendant was my great grandfather who lived in a house I can see from this street corner!!! Wednesday night was pretty busy and I came and went before 7. I can only imagine what it's like on weekends. However, don't let that scare you off. My friend and I stumbled into the Bishop Art District because we had a reservation for a foot massage at Yaya Foot Massage. We arrived to the area a bit early and had a bit of time to explore the area. Luckily enough this area was one of the areas my friend wanted to visit based on her research of Trip Advisor's recommendation. They have over 60 boutiques as well as local restaurants, coffee shops, theaters, antique shops and art galleries. The streets themselves are even a work of art with murals painted to the side of most buildings, really revealing the artistic culture and passion of the city. I really appreciate the signs regarding wearing face masks and social distancing put up by the Bishop Art District to remind everyone to be responsible to stop the spread of the pandemic. My friend and I didn't really find anything to buy but it was just fun to walk around and explore their artistic streets and boutiques. It was a fun way to get some exercise in after a large meal and before a relaxing foot massage. Definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the Dallas, TX area and you want to explore the art and culture of the city. read more

It was a Friday night myself, and a friend of mine pulled up to Café Brazil now on this particular night it was a little chilly outside, so I was kind of cold we walked in. I had all intentions on getting me a hot chocolate which I went ahead and ordered once we sit down, and my friend actually looked at their menu and was kinda excited because we seen that they were now serving alcohol, so she decided to order what was said on the menu again the alcohol menu a blueberry smash now we place our order. The waiter is not attentive, but we decide to look over that because again I'm cold and I'm really wanting to get this hot chocolate so I can warm up. I get my hot chocolate which was actually good. My friend receives her blueberry Smash and upon looking at it, she's like very underwhelm because it the presentation is not anything and upon her taste in it we're not wanting anything extremely strong, but it actually just taste like a Sprite for like four or five blueberries thrown in there. Blueberries are not smashed mullet. None of that. They're just blueberries tossed in the glass with Sprite so we try to get our waiters attention and actually had to ask the manager if he could get our waiters attention and I'm sorry I should've said this in the beginning there will only Three people in the restaurant this night. We made the fourth so this was not a crowded restaurant this time of night nothing like that again I waiter was just very unattended and OK. We were gonna look over that but my friend goes to explain to the waiter first she asked him what is it that I actually ordered he told her a blueberry smash she decided to explain to him that she's actually a bartender herself and this is not a blueberry Smash or there's no alcohol in here. It just taste like a sprite, and you guys haven't smashed any of the blueberries. He proceeded to pick up the glass, slide it back to her and tell her that he does not give a fuck. Why are we telling him now? These are his exact words I'm not adding on anything. These are his exact words when he looks at us. I'm in shock at this time to the point. My mouth is wide open. Now my friend is livid and normally it's me, but I'm still in shock as I'm coming her down I go ahead and gather my things and we proceed to walk to the manager to maybe explain the situation to him and he he's actually making excuses for the language that has came out of his employers mouth Now I could've got riled up, but then that have been another reason for like always someone to say we were just two black aggressive women mind you I'm 49 but if we decide to take up for ourselves, we are aggressive so we leave and that's how our Friday night ended Café Brazil I would not recommend this place to anyone read more

I was researching the JFK assassination. I learned Lee Harvey Oswald lived in the area. I walked around the Bishop Arts District. I saw a lot of murals that I enjoyed. I walked a tiny shopping street for the pedestrians. It reminds me of Yokocho in Japan. Yokocho is alleyways off to the side of the main street. It was an early morning, but if I could walk at night, I could see a lot of people. I went to Texas Theater on Jefferson street where Oswald was arrested. I saw many Hispanic stores. Everything has changed since 1963. I really loved this area. Please stop by some coffee shop, then enjoy your zen moment! read more

This place is a real gem to visit especially if you're into small shops and businesses. Each small stores are so unique in their own way and does their own thing. I remember walking into this store where the owner does custom furnitures and we learned about the myth of the jackalope as well. We also bought some clothes from Bella and Brawns. Got some pies at emporium pies and we are eying the Paradiso restaurant to eat at when the weather is beautiful! Overall, this place will need more than just a day to be explored! read more

This place was really neat as I had never been here before. I was pleasantly surprised by the good mix of retail shops, eating places, and artwork. For my odd, rather eccentric, personality, the District had the two things I look for: a coffee shop and a Tobacconist. After walking around for quite some time, I took advantage of both, grabbing a cup of java to-go from Brazil and walking over to Cigar Art. Everyone was very welcoming and quickly included me in their conversation. In fact, another patron purchased a cigar for me to try: the Dissident. I was very pleased with the recommendation. I didn't see a lot of murals...but then again I wasn't looking for them as this was a quick stop before my flight back home. All the shops I ventured into had overpriced goods so I was really just window shopping and taking pictures. There were 2 street performers playing their guitar and singing down the street from each other, which exuded some good vibes. I've noticed live music is a big thing here which I like! I hate that this neighborhood is so far from me!!! I would like to spend more time here but I never want to make the drive and get pass constructions! The area is aka Oak Cliff. The hipsters call it Bishop Arts District because Oak Cliff is associated with gang related activities. That is still around no matter what name you change it to but is safe as long as you don't venture out of the shops. Nothing was happening here when I was growing up in Dallas. How have I never been here before?! This is such a cool little place. There are restaurants and shopping galore. Tonight we ventured to Bishop Arts to try Tillman's out for DFW Restaurant Week. Whoa. So good. If you haven't tried it, make sure to make reservations TODAY. We also tried the Ten Bells Tavern for a beer after eating dinner. Even though I was stuffed, I kept wanting to eat everything that came out of the kitchen. Good local beer on tap and a cool patio.. this is worth a look at. I love the Bishop Arts feel.
