How fun it is to see that Yelp sticker posted on the front window at this bakery in Italy. Our food tour on Sept 25, 2023 "Rome Twilight Trastevere" with Eating Europe had this as one of the stops. We appreciated learning about the awards Stephania, the owner had received and also saw the yellow oven her great grandfather, Sesto used when starting this family business. This neighborhood is known for the coolest bars and hidden gem eateries but this bakery did not register as such for moi. Biscottificio Innocenti is known for their artisan cookies/biscottis. Founded in 1920, and family owned entering generation number four, Biscottificio Innocenti occupies a quiet stretch of Via del Luce in Trastevere, an area now best known for its nightlife but one that certainly does not appear as such during daylight. Now under the direction of Stefania Innocenti and her daughter Michela, their shop centered around a belted oven built in 1950, it is from down the street that one can begin to smell Butter and Sugar from 08h00 until 20h00 Monday through Saturday, though the best time to visit is rumored to be between 09h30 and 14h00 on Sunday. Faded blue from the outside, windows displaying Innocenti's bounty bathing an aged interior with light, it is immediately upon entry that guests will notice a wall of photos, many famous Italians who've enjoyed now-€18 per kilogram Cookies over the past century. Defying the American idea that Biscotti are oblong and dry, that term instead used to describe a wide variety of shapes and consistencies, it was in broken Italian that two guests requested the elder Innocenti compose two boxes, some still-warm from the vintage orange oven. The only shop of its kind in Rome, historic recipes and the oven's 16-meter belt allowing for even baking-duration, it is besides the point to describe each of the family's various Cookies at-length, just know that "Brutti ma Buoni" are requested by name for a reason while Macaroons, Sandwich Cookies and little mounds covered in Almonds are also exemplary. read more

This was the third stop on Eating Italy's "Twilight Trastevere" food tour. While in English biscotti refers to a very specific type of cookie, in Italian "biscotti" refers to any cookie. When visiting Europe tradition is viewed more favorably to innovation. In the case of this bakery it has been a family-run business since the 1920's. Stefania is the current owner although her daughter Michela has helped in the shop, especially during the holiday season. Their pride and joy has been their oven - 15 feet long and made during the 1950's, it has allowed them to make all kinds of biscotti. Production starts early in the morning and continues until the early afternoon. To date the bakery sells over 50 types of biscotti. The bakery is no longer considered "off the beaten path" as many Italians and locals can attest to the cookies. Many guidebooks recommend this place and you can see food tours stop here as part of an exploration into Rome's Trastevere district. On the wall you can see articles and pictures of Stefania with other famous people. However just because a place is well known doesn't mean it has fallen victim to its success. The key to their success is that the business concept is simple and they do it very well. On my tour they held out a tray of three different cookies. One of the cookies is the "brutti ma buoni", which is made of only hazelnuts, egg whites and sugar. I liked it because of the strong hazelnut notes and it's not too sweet. The other two were variations of Italian butter cookies but olive oil is used in lieu of butter. One was shaped like a cat's tongue with one side dipped in chocolate, the other was a sandwich with a fruity jam in the center, maybe apricot? All were delicious and would go well with coffee. If you weren't with a tour group you could pick out a bag of cookies. I think they sell by the kilo. read more

This adorable little bakery can do no wrong! It's a small family business not in a tourist area. A challenge to find, and worth the hunt! We walked a mile and a half ONE way from our Airbnb to go to this bakery on more than one occasion. The cookies are incredible in terms of variety. They have a pastry puff that is crispy and flaky and not at all too sweet. But the winner for us was the "apple pie" which was more like a custard cream pie with apples on top. So incredible!!! Cute little bakery that sells cookies. The lady working was so cute and she had limited English. So what we did is take photos of the ones we wanted from the outside through the window and said how many we wanted of each in Italian. They reminded me of Danish cookies but we got some surprised ones. We had gotten one that was a peanut butter one that was pretty tasty and we didn't realize it was peanut butter when we picked it. Cookies were just OK. Nothing really wowed me. Chocolate was good and cookies were soft (more cakey I guess), but I've had better store bought cookies. Price is by weight. 2.5€ for 7 bite size cookies. Cash only. Layout is awkward. You can't really see the cookies from the counter, you can see them better from the street window. I had no idea what to order so I just asked her to pick what was good (I like chocolate). She surprised me when she used her bare fingers to pick up the cookies. Their Brutti ma Buoni cookies, which are made with ground hazelnuts and no other oil/fat, are swoon-worthy. Crunchy as you bite into hem, but with soft slightly chewy centers and finely chopped and/or ground hazelnuts throughout. We returned 2x for these after first trying them on our trastevere food tour. I would've liked to sample every cookie in the store, but only got to have their chocolate dipped cookie (like a Pepperidge Farm Milano but of course better), their apple tart with custard center, which was incredible, and their huge, flaky elephant ear/ palmier-type pastry. This was also excellent, but I think I prefer ones made with butter. Get the brutti ma buoni! read more

This is what an Italian cookie shop should be. Fantastic selection. Seasonal favorites. For example I was here for Carnevale. The season is known for its frappe. It's basically fried pastry crispy like a chip with sugar. I had a few of these since I was here for the season but this was by far the best. The rest of the cookies are amazing. If it wasn't for all the business rating stickers on the windows we would have missed it. It was definitely the neighborhood bakery with many locals--- very small but quaint. We were hoping it was a full fledge bakery with cakes, pies, cookies, pastries, donuts, and breads. Perhaps, it was because we got there too late in the day. Small selection of pies, no cakes, but a vast array of cookies. We got some cookies, didn't want to walk away empty handed without at least trying. One bite and we wish we got more----mini heart cookies with chocolate in the middle, meringues, square sugar biscuit cookies, mini square chocolate chip cookies, and an elephant ear pastry. We could have ate these all day with cappuccinos. Wish they had tables outside and served caffe. This is on our must visit again before head back to the states. This is probably the worst customer service I have experienced in all of Rome. I came here excited to try new things before heading to the Colloseum. I ask the short haired baker in the front who owns the bakery what things were (2/3 common questions I.e what is popular) and she was rude about it. I asked about the coffee that is literally a machine and she says she's a baker not a bar owner. You can barely see what she has on display but expects you to come in prepared. Amazing cookies. Went there on our recent trip to Rome and got a bag of goodies thinking it might be enough to last us until we got to Naples. The bag was empty before we even got to the train station. We had a variety bag with a several different kinds of cookies, and they were all wonderful. The lemon ones were my favorite though -- the perfect combination of crunchy and tart! It's a family-owned place that has been in business for generations. Inexpensive (they charge by the weight of the bag of cookies) but they don't accept cards. Do yourself a favor and buy at least 10 euro worth; you won't regret it! read more
