My husband and I had gotten a sandwich from this place to take back to our hotel for a snack. It was the BEST sandwich we had in Rome. The bread was amazing and the cheese and salami were to die for.
Found this hidden gem just outside of Piazza Navona. The young lady behind the counter (spoke perfect English) was so friendly and helpful. She took the time to cheerfully explain what was inside the pastries and offered suggestions to try. We would have gone back just to see her again, she made our day! The pastries though! Come hungry. Plan on eating way too much. The scent alone will make you want to taste everything. Look at what they have. We tried their sugared donut (ciambella), a jam filled linzer tart and a sfoglie romane (pastry dough/ like phyllo, filled with an incredible chocolate ganache-like cream). We are headed back tomorrow, even though it's a 20-minute walk and we pass eight other pasticcerias to get there. Five of six two-person tables inside. They also have coffee, wine, beer, pinse and panini.
After our vespa tour around the city, we ended it by the crazy Piazza Navona near Campo di Fiori. The main Campo area was way too congested with people and trash around the area. Walking along the side street, we found this bakery which was very quiet and well stocked with sweets, pizza, sandwiches, wine, beer, candy, etc. There are a few tables to dine inside and we enjoyed a snack of some pizza with wine. Only note was there there were so many baked goods that there is not any way that volume is produced daily. Evidence of that is that some of the goods were looking a bit aged so choose your items carefully.
Very friendly people and delicious treats! They speak a little English, enough to understand what to buy.
Went here on a rainy Tuesday to pick up some pastries. Got the cherry tart, pistachio tart, and pistachio sponge cake. They looked so delicious but unfortunately they tasted terrible. The tarts were both stale and hard, with the filling tasting artificial and preservative-like. It was pure sugar and way too sweet. The pistachio sponge cake was alright but had an interesting herbal liqueur in it that took away from the flavor. However, this all came out to €16 which is quite expensive compared to other bakeries in the area. When paying, we pulled out a card given it was a decent sum and the cashier said cash. We fumbled for some cash and then the cashier pulls out a card machine and we were like oh okay and then he quickly says he was mistaken and put the machine away and said "cash". Not a good experience overall.
After walking by the shop windows full of goodies two or three times we knew we had to stop in. There were so many delicious things to try but we picked out a few good looking pastries and brought them back to our hotel room to eat. Oh my gosh were they good! I would definitely recommend Il Fornaio if you're in the city and I will absolutely stop by again my next time in Rome! Also, the man behind the counter (the owner maybe) was extremely sweet. We loved how happy he seemed! That's always nice :)
This is a delightful pastry and deli shop right off the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, near the Campo di Fiore. You can't miss it; it has an enormous mortadella in the doorway. They offer a wide assortment of pastries, cookies, sandwiches and breads. The bakery has been in the same spot since 1970. The price you pay is based on the weight of your order. We purchased 5 different pastries for € 11. Even at the end of the day, the pastries were fresh and delicious.
You seriously can't walk by this bakery and not stop in. This bakery is located near Campo di Fiore. My boyfriend and I stopped in for pastries for breakfast and bread for lunch. The pastries were delicious and around 1 euro each. The bread was even better, crusty on the outside and super soft on the inside. In addition to pastries and bread they have all sorts of sandwiches and cookies. If you are in Rome, definitely stop here for breakfast, desserts, or a quick lunch!
A wonderful little bakery, patisserie store. We bought fresh bread and a small fruit tart to go. The owner was very kind and helpful. We will come back again to try other bake goods.
What a stroke of luck we wondered by this bakery on our walk back to our Apartment! They are amazing! Everything was so fresh and delicious. Samples to make sure we got what we wanted and they were so kind to my crazy kiddos. This place should be in your list! Grazie Mille!
We were set up by our hotel to have dinner here for our anniversary. We arrived on time to a very nice corner restaurant, the wait staff was ready and waiting and went out of our way to make us feel at home. We order a bottle of Prosecco which was perfect to set the tone for the evening. We started out with bruschetta con mozzarella di bufala" as our appetizer, it was amazing. For dinner my wife selected the ribeye with a side of potatoes, I picked at it and it was delicious. I myself selected the "I cannot remember the name" but was pasta with lobster and wow! I had never tried this combination before and was amazing. We ended the evening with creme brûlée which my wife loved (she's an expert lol). This restaurant was the cherry on top for our excellent trip to Rome for our wedding anniversary.
Focaccia!! This bakery has an old school feel to it, right down to nonna sitting at the cash register opposite to the bakery display counter. We had a spinach and ricotta slice, and a focaccia filled with mortadella and they were both delicious! There were plenty of other savories and tempting sweet treats on display in the cabinets - enough to please all tastes. Tjhis is a good value option for lunch! read more
A great place to grab a bite to eat , it was not full of tourists and they were nice as can be to us. The mortadella with pistachios on focaccia was delicious. They only had two tables but we were able to sit and eat and have some coffee as well. Definitely hit the spot. read more

We spent three weeks in Croatia and Italy, and this was hands down the best bakery we visited. The variety and quality are both excellent, and the woman who helped us was sweetly enthusiastic in the way that's unique to Italians. They had a nice selection of both sweet and savory. I had a sandwich that was recommended (she could spot a savory lover apparently), everyone else had something sweet. All were excellent. Coffee was fabulous too. It's very close to Campo de'Fiori (about a minute walk). read more

An Italian bakery for foodies and all to love. The moment I stepped in Italian soul, there were only a couple things I desired: (a) to experience the best of Italian food and (b) to get some delicious biscotti. Never did I think the later would be a challenge. Went to several bakeries, only to be disappointed that they were closed for most of August and some going into September. Then came Il Fornaio!!! The moment I walked in, I was in Italian cookie heaven. They had my biscottis (which they call Tozzetti) as well as a variety of other favorites of mine. The nice gentleman in the back helped us with our purchase. He even ensured that we got the freshest of tozzettis and offered to give us a bag with various cookies. All the cookies were mouthwatering delicious!!! They are the best I have had, and I have had my fair share of Italian cookies (even those in NY's little Italy). Come and see this Italian gem for yourself. I highly recommend it!!! read more

I went here for a pastry this morning based on the stellar reviews. Today is July 1, 2021. Perhaps they are suffering from the lack of business during the pandemic, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. My strudel was old and dried out. €3.50. They appeared understaffed. read more

A local bakery artisan. Surprisingly wide range of pastry and snack. I feel tradition and values of this business(not junk food), so I decided to try something local. Place has basic outdoor seating, but you can grab some stuff and eat it on nearest "piazza". read more

We went twice while we were in Rome and each pastry item we tried was delicious. The ricotta spinach was amazing. Just the apple strudel was a bit sweet for my taste. Prices were fair for the quality. read more

The custard stuffed croissant was pretty good (very little custard, just fyi), but everything else we tried was bland. The Strudel Tedesco was the weakest item; three of us tried it and wouldn't take a second bite. The biscotti had no taste and was stale. It was a beautiful spread of pastries but overall disappointing. Hopefully this isn't typical of the bakery and was just a bad day. read more

If I could give this small artisan bakery 12 stars I would. They have a pistachio cake that is a symphony for your mouth. The layered sponge cake inside is spiked with Strega (an Italian anisic herbal liqueur), interspersed with several layers of a dense pistachio cream and the outside is thickly, generously studded with crumbled pistachio nuts. Seriously, this cake haunts my dreams. It is very green, both sweet and boozy and bitter/herbal. Such a divine play of flavors! It might also have chocolate in it. Proprietor says it's a Roman specialty but I never saw it in any other bakeries and I spent 3 weeks in Rome and visited a ton of bakeries. I'm focusing on this cuz it was so unique but everything here is good. Another standout is the 'spinach pie' that tastes a lot like a spanikopita but is not made with phyllo dough, but had a yummy crust top and bottom sprinkled with sesame seeds. I ended up bringing 3 big squares of it for the long plane ride home. Roman lembas! But everything here is good from the apricot tarts to the biscotti/tozetti to the savory pizzas. As others said, everything is sold by the slice & it's centrally located. The staff didn't speak much English the 3 times I was there this summer, so I didn't get all the ingredients of the pistachio cake, or maybe they were being coy because it's a secret family recipe, but we made ourselves understood just fine. read more
Baked goods and desserts from El Fornaio are super delicious. Case after case filled with baked pastries, Sicilian cannoli, pies, endless biscuits, bruttiboni, cavallucci, crostata, zeppole, there is no end in sight. Large meringue (Meringhe giganti) - whipped egg whites and sugar - melt in your mouth. Sfogliatelle Napoletane from Campania, thinly layered shell shaped filled pastry gives you heavenly taste and texture. They have prosciutto and ham panini and focaccia pizzas too. This was a 10/10 bakery. We ordered a croissant with marmalade and an apple strudel with cappuccinos. They were absolutely delicious. We happened to walk past this cute bakery on our way to Campo de Fiori to shop. It isn't close to our hotel but we are considering taking a taxi there tomorrow morning just to taste more from this delicious and charming place. I feel like it's nothing but old school Italy and goodness!! read more

I had passed by this place a couple of times and each time the desserts displayed in the front window caught my eye. So I finally caved and went in and couldn't decide what to get! I decided I couldn't come to Italy and not try an authentic Italian cannoli, so that's what I got, and it didn't disappoint. It was the perfect size and stuffed with ricotta cheese, chocolate chips, and the shell it was in was fried to perfection. I was scared it was going to have a gross cheesy taste and not taste like dessert but it was the perfect amount of sweet without overdoing it. I also got the tiramisu because I'm a sucker for it and it looked amazing. However, the tiramisu was just okay. I liked the bottom part with the lady fingers because it was nice and moist and tasted like there might've been some alcohol in it but I'm not sure. I've had better tiramisu in Rome so I wouldn't get one from Il Fornaio again. I'd come back here to try more goodies in the future. read more
