The tortillas were overly fried and excessively oily, and the meat resembled "carnitas" on tostadas rather than traditional birria. The dining experience felt more like a carry-out spot than a sit-down restaurant--no chips, salsa, or menus were provided. If you're looking for authentic birria, I'd recommend checking out the restaurant on Oxford and Michigan, which offers handmade tortillas and a much, much better flavor. read more

So came upon this palace randomly, it's a little hole the wall place. It's a nice mom and pop set up Bigger on the inside than the outside short on parking but there is a nearby parking lot that you could park in. I ordered 2 steak tacos 1 seasoned pork taco And I also ordered One regular pork taco And one taco of goat 1 chicken taco now that's all in English in Spanish it was. 2 tacos de Asada, 1 taco carnitas, 1 taco de pastor, 1 taco de birra and 1 taco de pollo. It took probably over 20 minutes for my 6 tacos at a place that serves tacos, burritos, and tortas only I was little shocked how long it took for dome basic tacos. I got a large horchata as well. That was out in 4 min or so. I tipped well even though I never saw my waitress but 3 times once for my order, my, then last my food. The flavor was there the hot sauces were great however the steak was dry and the tortias cold so I probably won't go back to try anything else but if you got the time and patience give it a shot. read more

I had been craving birria and my cousin told me about this place so I had to check it out. It's a local spot, small but spacious with a small parking lot. I ordered to go and they packed everything so well. I drove over an hour to get it to my family and it was still warm. Nothing spilled over. They included onion, cilantro, limes, consommé, salsa, silverware and napkins. The price was decent and it was lamb meat. My family loved it. read more

If you are looking for a super authentic Mexican restaurant Birreria Ocotlan is a fantastic choice to go to. Located at 2033 S State Avenue Birreria Ocotlan is so authentic that you literally must know how to speak Spanish if you go there. Literally no one who worked there knew how to speak English which made my friend and I really dig deep and try to remember our high school Spanish classes to communicate. It was fun and was a cool experience being in that situation where you had to speak another language in order to get our food and pay. The pros of Birreria Ocotlan are their food and hospitality. The server we had seemed nice from what I could understand from her Spanish. She was always smiling and was very patient when we were trying to tell her our order. For their food I suggest trying their birria tacos with their consume to dip your tacos in. I also really highly suggest you give the horchata drink a try if you ever come to Birreria Ocotlan or a Mexican restaurant in general that offers it. It was my first time ever trying it and I have always heard it was a popular Mexican drink and so I decided to try it with my friend. It tasted like iced vanilla/cinnamon cream milk, and I am now obsessed with horchata. The cons of Birreria Ocotlan was the atmosphere. When you walk in the restaurant you just had happy birthday balloons when you walk in at the entrance, a tv playing salsa music on YouTube on your right after walking in, and that was it. Walls, booths, and tables were just all plain white. They just have baskets for the food and Styrofoam cups for the drinks and dips. Which kind of stinks because it could be so much more of an experience! They just need to show some love on the inside and make it more unique like other Mexican restaurants and not plain. In conclusion If you want some really authentic Mexican food that's pretty good with cool drinks to try, want to talk to people in Spanish that have a really good hospitality staff, and do not care about atmosphere as much like I do personally then Birreria Ocotlan is a great place to try! read more

This was a fun local adventure! Feeling inspired by our 2021 food and drink trend report, I set out on a mission to find the top spots for birria tacos in Central Indiana. Stop one: Birreria Ocotlan. This is a great example of how many undiscovered spots we have in our backyard. Birreria Ocotlan has been around for 15 years and I've never heard of it until this past week! It's a little off the beaten path but the friendliness of the owners and unique offerings are worth the adventure. Cherry on top? We tied it in with a drive-thru visit to Delicias Jalisco down the road for mangonadas to go. Birreria Ocotlan is a hole-in-the-wall but what it lacks in frills it makes up for with the sweet and warm vibes of the staff. Upon arriving, I was set on the Birria para llevar for four people ($24). This meal is all wrapped up for carryout with broth, meat, cilantro, onions, a mole-like sauce and lime wedges. My only wish was that there was a little more broth to go with it. I'm a big soup fan...so that's probably no surprise that I would want more broth. With all the hype around the birria tacos , I had to try some. I wasn't aware that this place even existed until I drove past it one day and saw a sign. So I hopped on the chance. Unfortunately the whole menu isn't online so I had to call and ask if they had them, which they did. 6 tacos and 2 consumes were $21.50 which isn't too terrible. I opted for three fried and three regular. I would highly suggest the fried taco, especially when dipping in your consume. It holds way better and doesn't get soggy. yoooo!! i'll just start by saying the overall experience of dipping a taco is okay so i tried to call to check to see what meats they had and to verify their hours but the phone rang and went to voicemail. i just went ahead and took my chances and made the drive: they were open and people were seated inside. unfortunately there is no signage about masks or covid risks. this is disappointing to ya girl as this location is minority frequented and located in a high minority high poverty area. anyway it's a yellow spot right on the corner so you can miss it but you shouldn't lol it's super authentic in them taking your order on a receipt pad and they had to call the young woman up to speak to me due to the language barrier . they don't serve queso cheese dip. it was clearly mostly family inside working. i asked her questions about her favorite and she specified if i wanted my shells hard or soft. i showed her a picture from yelp and i'm like FRY THEM . i got a small consumé i totally regret only getting 2 tacos but i was already cheating on my diet. i asked how long she said 10 mins and i went back to my car to wait. they do have plexi glass up between the kitchen and the dining area, unsure if that's new or been there. there was your typical real sugar sodas and beers. they have all the meats from chicken to lamb. my order was ready when i got in like she said it would be. it stayed warm my 33 minute drive home and whew were those tacos banging!! the consumé was okay i wish it would have had meat inside of it? i wonder if i can just ask for that. if didn't know what to expect taste wise but i really enjoyed the whole process together and even pouring my favorite salsa verde on top added to the flavor. i spent $8.50 the service was quick, they were patient, my food was fresh. support them okay? who doesn't love tacos read more

This place is such a fantastic hole in the wall serving really delicious, affordable food. As others have mentioned, there can sometimes be a language barrier but all the staff are super friendly and patient. And honestly, the first time you go, the ordering is really easy! You've got to get the birria! The "plato grande" and "plato chico" are two sizes of birria meal that come with meat, broth, fresh corn tortillas, chopped onions, cilantro, dried chiles, and limes. The chiles have to be broken up and put in the broth to release the heat. The meat on its own is delicious, but when put in a taco, dipped in the super flavorful broth and topped with lime/salsa, it's fantastic! This place is such a hole in the wall, this place is very small so you have to wait for table because they are always busy. If you don't see a parking in front they have more spots in the backside if the restaurant. My friend brought me here to try their Birria and it was amazing. Birria is their specialty hence the name, it is a goat stew delicacy. They give you the meat by itself, the stock/broth in a pitcher and the onions, cilantro and limes for you to make it on your own soup bowl to your liking, it comes with lots of tortillas if you prefer to eat it taco style. I ate it as a soup and as a taco which were delicious, the meat were very soft and savory adding the stock/broth made it more comforting. The were 3 of us and shared the "por libra" option which means "per pound" and it was not enough for us! so we had to ask for more meat and tortillas because it was just that good! This is definitely an authentic Mexican experience! Our waitress actually didn't speak English and we were the only people in the small, but crowd restaurant not of Hispanic descent. Their specialty is a soup brought in a pitcher that you mix yourself with cilantro and onion and then a pay by weight stringy meat. You put in all together and into corn tortillas. Definitely not like anything I have had before. It was very flavorful and tasty. One star off for odd hours, they close at 6pm every day. Just sat down, and I'm loving this place so far. The cook is singing in the kitchen. Always a good sign. Menu? Who needs one? We have birria. You want that on a plate, or in a taco or burrito? So I finished my meal. Amazeballs! The broth was delicious, but subtle. The goat was tender and flavorful. They give you all kinds of goodies - lime wedges, dried chiles, red and green salsas. Ever had pho? Add stuff to your bowl of goat and broth until you get it the way you like it. Then, either make some tacos with the supplied tortillas or just eat then with spoonfuls of the stuff. One of the best cheap eats in town! This is a usual place for me, especially after a drinking night! Birria is a Traditional Mexican stew from the State of Jalisco, whose base is goat meat or beef simmered with different peppers and as garnish the usual; onion, cilantro and lime. A big plate is around 8-9 dlls they provide several tortillas to make tacos out of that or you can order tacos aside. This place is small but they make you feel like family, it lacks of big parking but you can find a spot nearby. The menu is short and simple, Birria (small or big), tacos (different meats) or ceviche tostadas. They sell beer so you can recover from a hangover in a short time. Their ceviche tostadas are shrimp and fish and they are very tasty although not super cheap each one of them are 3-4 dlls. Tacos are good as well and they have the usual asada, tongue and birria. The world has come full circle! I used to work here when I was in high school. That was in 2010-2011. After a few trips out of town and some great encounters with birria, I decided it was time to go back to Birrieria Ocotlan because it was the only place in Indy that I knew made birria. Not much has changed since 2011. It still super small, no air conditioner, just a window unit. The same tables and chairs. Same owners. And the same food items. I of course ordered the birria. It is good! Not the best I have ever had, but it is good and satisfies my cravings. It is also pretty affordable, I think about $8. It comes with tortillas and one fixings like chile, cilantro and onion. I love the simplicity of the place. If you want tacos or birria you come here. It is a comfortable place where people go during lunch or after work. There is Spanish tv in the background and a lot of chatter. My only wish is that they stayed open longer, they close at 6 pm. Also, there is a lady that sells buñuelos. It is a pastry kind of like elephant ears. They are delicious!!!! Please give them a try. read more

I've driven by this place enough times that I thought I should give it a shot. Stopped in for lunch to find a packed house full of Spanish speakers (great sign!) eating tacos, burritos, soup, etc. I don't speak Spanish, so the menu was somewhat difficult for me to read, but I just wanted some staple items anyway. I ordered two chicken tacos and two pastor tacos. They were ready in just a few minutes. Authentic Mexican tacos are simple -- meat, onion, and cilantro in a tortilla. These were true to form. I topped them off with a couple squirts of both salsas available and some fresh lime. Overall, the taste was very good but not the best I've had. But Indiana standards, this is peak Mexican. This taqueria specializes in birria con consume (Goat soup). It is comparable to any that I have had in the major cities such as Chicago (which is worth a visit just for their Mexican food alone). They do not speak very much English in here but just be patient and polite ant you will make it out satisfied, happy and with your belly full. The staff is great. This is also the only place I have been with labio (cow Lips) and cachete (cow cheek). The labio is like lengua (tongue) but a bit more fatty and the cachete is on par with the most tender beef you will ever eat. The tortas are also worth mentioning. They smother the whole sandwich with a red sauce and they are good. This place is a truly authentic Mexican spot. read more

If you go there and neglect to have a camarones taco... turn around and get right back in there. Delicious place with authentic food. Lingua, lip, beef, chicken, shrimp, and fish tacos on the menu. My BF had the more interesting meats and loved them. I had the traditional and loved them. We also got the consommé and loved it on a cold day. All tacos come in corn tortillas (only way in my opinion). Order them the true Mexican way with only cilantro and onion on top... then put their homemade hot sauces on it. The menu is in Spanish and our waitress spoke Spanish, so we improvised a little. I decided to go with a good ol' burrito. What better way to rate a place than going by something you know. There are not very many menu items other than goat stew, tacos, tortas and tostadas. I tried their goat stew and it was very good. It was a lot less dark and greasy than other restaurants I have been to; That to me was fantastic. Their small bowl is a great portion for an individual. This place is pretty damn good. They have a very simple menu, pretty much just tacos and goat soup. All of the tacos are very good, just warm corn tortillas, tender flavorful meat, onions, and cilantro. I really like the cachete. If you dine in they will serve your goat soup with warm tortillas. If you are into a little heat then they have toasted chiles at all of the tables to add to your soup. I would brush up on your spanish before you come to make the ordering a little smoother, but the staff is very friendly either way. read more

Appearance isn't much but don't let that fool you. My husband was craving goat so we found this place. He enjoyed the Birria (goat soup). I had the taco de birria and taco de lengua. Both very tasty.
