This place got so much hype a couple years ago and I finally made my way out here. I just happened to be in the area with friends so we thought we should stop by. We came by on a Friday evening around 7PM and it was honestly kind of empty which I found shocking. Its fast casual so order at a counter and then bring it to your seat. I ordered the birria tacos and the dipping trio. The dipping was delish, queso was great and so was the guac and the salsa was good too! I had the birria combo (#1) - 3 birria tacos (2 beef, 1 vegan) that came with chips and also added a beef mulita. Everything was made fresh to order, the birria & mulita shells had a nice, fresh out the grease crunch. Beef birria & mulita were awesome! The vegan one was ok, I like the vegan birria at Calaveritas better. Consome wasn't as rich & flavorful as I've had at other places, more watered down. I say this bc usually eat the consome on its own when I finish my tacos but I barely used this one for dipping. But at least they don't charge extra for the consome, comes with the combo. They have a fresh salsa bar, water w/cups, Togo boxes and bags to use that at your convenience. They also have a variety of agua frescas - I had the horchata which was good! I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now because I've heard such good things so I'm glad I finally got to go! The restaurant is very large, lots of open space and definitely a no frills type of place. You order at the counter. The person who took our order was really nice and answered any questions we had. I think it's cool that you can choose between goat, beef, and chicken for your birria meat. Beef is usually the default. I opted for the goat because you can't get that in a lot of places. I also got consomme with my tacos. My favorite thing about this place though was the salsa bar for sure. There was a green salsa there that I could not get enough of, I swear I could've drank it because it was so delicious! The food took a little bit to come out. But not a ridiculously long time. The tacos were absolutely delicious. So tasty! I liked the consommé a lot as well. I think it could've been warmer, it was a little on the lukewarm side in my opinion. But they give plenty and I took the rest home and added water and had it as a soup haha. Would love to come back and try their birria ramen because I did see that on the menu! So glad we tried this spot. The quesabirria tacos were outstanding. Crispy, flavorful, and cheesy. Everything you want in a taco. The consommé was tasty too. I ordered the #1 that comes with two tacos, consommé, and chips. I added an extra taco bc I was really hungry, but tbh it was almost too much food lol. They have a salsa bar, so you can load up with different salsas, pickled carrots, jalapeños, and limes. They were kind of busy, but service was relatively quick. I came here at the suggestion of one of my friends, and let me just tell you that the drive over there is so well worth it if you live a ways away from Smyrna. I ordered the combo #1 with mulitas. I got goat for the quesabirrias and beef for the mulitas. Now when I tell you I inhaled everything!! The quesabirrias were so deliciously cheesy, and the meat was so incredibly tender! The beef in the mulitas were so incredibly seasoned and well cooked, and I thoroughly enjoyed the crunch of the two tortillas. I definitely plan on only getting the beef next time because the seasonings were simply outstanding for that meat (not that the goat was bad, but the beef was something else entirely). Even my friend that always ordered chicken soleley gets the beef because it's that good! The only thing that was a bit of a bummer is that they weren't able to make any of the cocktail drinks on their menu so we got a frozen margarita. It was really delicious at least! This was my second time coming here but it's been a few years. Unfortunately the AC seemed broken when we came today, so it was a bit uncomfortable given how hot it is outside. As for the food, we got 2 Birria tacos with shredded beef, 2 Birria tacos with steak, the loaded fries with shredded beef, churros, and Agra Fresca. The Birria tacos and consume were okay, they didn't really have as much flavor. It was definitely better the last time I came. We preferred the steak tacos over the shredded beef. The loaded fries were so yummy, I would recommend getting steak instead of the shredded beef though. The churros were yummy, with a super tasty dulce dipping sauce on the side. We got the pineapple agua Fresca and it was refreshing. Overall it was good but not blown away like I was last time. Likely wouldnt go out of our way to visit again but worth it if you're in the area. read more

We ate here yesterday. I had three tacos (the pulled pork is amazing!) and my husband had combo number 1. We also shared a mango beverage. The food is good. The salsa bar is nice well supplied and well maintained. Actually the whole place is very clean, exceptionally so. Service is helpful professional and friendly. We were there early on a Saturday and there was no wait to order. So you go in, place your order and wait briefly for your food to come up. I am convinced that tacos are a happy food. Have you ever eaten a taco and not felt happy? I was very excited that my husband found this spot for us to try and was even more excited that it will be a repeat indulgence. The restaurant itself is open, bright and cheery the staff were cheery and very nice! I had the beef quesabirria tacos and they were just as perfect as I had envisioned. I've been going to this place for about 6 months now. It was my "go to" for Birria tacos. This establishment is located in a gas station so nothing fancy BUT their food made up for the ambiance! The service is always quick & they are always friendly. The best part was their consume'... So rich in flavor and filled with stock from the meat. NOT ANYMORE!!!!! Either they have new management, a new cook, or just stretching out a dollar by adding water (or whatever they decided to use) to the consume'....The Nerve!! We went on a Saturday afternoon & there wasn't a long wait. The young lady who took our order was SO patient and helped us decide on what we wanted to order. It was reasonably priced. We don't have authentic birria tacos where I'm from so when visiting my sister in Atlanta, she brought me to Birria el Gordo for my first experience. I got a goat, jackfruit and beef birria taco with goat consommé. My goat one was the best, with the jackfruit a close second. The consommé had a lot of meat that almost made it a meal by itself. I will preface by saying I ordered from Uber Eats, so a couple of the issues would not necessarily have been an issue if I had been there in person. I ordered the quesabirria taco meal (combo 1). This is advertised as coming with salsa and a salsa selection was required - no salsa was provided. Additionally, I ordered the trio of drips (guacamole, salsa, and queso) - only the queso was provided. I got the second issue cleared up with Uber Eats, but I was bummed because I wanted some guacamole. Oh well. The quesabirria tacos were okay. I personally thought they were lacking a bit in flavor compared to the other similar ones I've had in the past. I also had the esquites. This was my favorite dish that I ordered, flavorful and plenty. Overall, I think I would pass on this spot. I would definitely recommend that if you plan to go, go in person. Pretty sure Birria el Gordo hyped up the birria taco trend in Atlanta in 2020. Once again, always years behind on the food trend, but I'm just grateful we finally got it. When I visited, they were only open weekends - so we came on a Sunday late afternoon and the line wasn't awful. Not great but bearable. It gave us time to decide what to order. We ended up trying the birria (duh) tacos and a vampiro. And of course from the secret menu, the birria ramen. There are combos available so we ordered combo #2, which came with a vampiro, one taco, and one taco dorado. Everything was super tasty - will have to try the quesatacos and mulita next time. Prices aren't super cheap but definitely worth it. One thing is I don't recommend taking the birria ramen to go. The ramen noodles soak up ALL of the consome, which... while it is tasty, makes for some soggy noodles. Make sure to ask if they can separate the noodles and the broth if ordering takeout. There are quite a few restaurants in Atlanta now catching up to the Birria Taco food trend - so Burria el Gordo has their work cut out for them. However, I do believe they're the only one in the area known for their Birria tacos. This location's a little far for me, but with their newly expanded hours, here's to hoping I make another visit soon. read more
