Greg was recommended to us by Willy at Willow Tree, and we were pleased and totally unsurprised to report it was an excellent recommendation. Greg was very helpful and totally understanding of our desire to use authentic materials in making repairs and changes to the home. We used granite slab and cobbles, and Boston City Hall brick pavers. Greg and his crew are prompt, meticulous and courteous, and the job was done on time and on budget. Our huge neurotic dog loves him, and that's more of an endorsement than I can adequately express in an on-line review. We couldn't be more pleased and have a list of future projects for him once we save up some more money. Just waiting for the carpenter to finish the back deck and start on the front porch to complete the work, but we recommend him without reservation. It's such a pleasure to find a skilled craftsman you know you'll work with for years to come. And with a 200 year old house, there's always work! I'll update the photos once everything is complete! Thanks Greg, for transforming or walkway and making our stairs gorgeous, level, and safe! P.S. Huge neurotic dog photo also included for your viewing pleasure.

First, his estimate was right in the middle of my many other estimates and he had the best vision as far as what to use, and how to make it pop. He wanted to make the path and steps a foot wider then everyone else for the same price. He was prompt in showing me pics of what he thought I wanted and brought a book and samples over right away. His insight made us so happy at the end and I would have been upset if I had gone narrower like other's suggested. He really cared about making it look the best. After the job started within a few weeks, it took one day to tear out the old steps and he uncovered a huge problem with carpenter ant damage. Greg was great in communicating the damage to me and flexible in allowing me a few days to have my carpenter take care of the problem, instead of just covering it up like he could have. He came back when the problem was fixed and it took a day to dig the path and pour a proper concrete foundation, which was missing and the reason the old steps crumbled in the first place. From there it took another day to build the steps, a day for the path and a day to clean the site up and add finishing touches. His crew arrived right on time and stayed late to finish the job daily. They were very clean and even helped me save some of the old stone and offered to move it to the place I wanted it on the property, which could not have been easy. My wife and I gutted our entire property and used several contractors and he was probably the best one we came across. We will be calling him again when our retaining wall goes in. Thanks Greg!

The project took about a week to complete, which was faster than initially expected, and the quality of the work was exceptional. I've been an architect for 30 years so I've inspected a lot of construction work and I can honestly say that the retaining wall exceeded my expectations in every way. I expected to get a replica of the original wall but got something far better in both appearance and quality. The team of masons were courteous and finished the project without skipping any days. They also cleaned up every day and left my yard cleaner than they found it when the project was finished. All of my immediate neighbors have complimented me on the wall and I expect to get many more when boating season on the lake begins next May. I solicited multiple bids for the wall project and selected AJ Masonry because they were the most informative and responsive to changes related to the Lynn Conservation Commission and Building Department. They were not the lowest bidder, nor the highest, but they were worth every penny. I can highly recommend them without hesitation.

Only a few got back to me and came to review the job. Of the few that made the cut and provided pricing, I selected Stefano's after seeing multiple recommendations for them in our local town's FB group. I dealt with Nick Amoroso. He was quick, efficient, answered all my questions and provided a reasonable quote when he said he would at the price we discussed. He also was around the building site on multiple days to discuss the project progress and review the work. When the work was done, he did a final review with me. Nick dropped off multiple samples of pavers so my wife could choose the color. He then picked them back up several days later. The morning of the job, the guys arrived early, introduced themselves and started work. They were efficient, polite and made minimal mess and cleaned up after themselves at the end of each day. In order to install the patio and walkway, they used a bobcat and a jackhamer to remove the old patio which had a 8 inch concrete slab under it. They also had to rip up irrigation systems and disassemble fences and underground downpipe water dispersal systems. They did all that and replaced the missing sections with new parts as they laid the new pavers. They did an excellent job. They even added new mulch to the garden beds next to the new patio and reseeded the areas on the edge of the walkway. I would use them again.

I had noticed that a support column on my porch had been leaning and buckling outward. Upon further investigating the issue it turned out that the extent of the damage was greater than appeared on the surface as the post had completely rotted through, the wall had pulled away from the deck and the foundation underneath had crumbled. Despite the amount of work involved, John remained honest and fair as he provided me with several options and worked with me and my budget to get the best result possible to meet both my expectations as well as his high standard of quality. I am beyond pleased with the final outcome! They managed to get the entire side of the porch torn down, the foundation properly repaired and then have it all rebuilt and tied back into the existing stairs and porch within just a few days. If you are in need of any masonry, carpentry or decking work I can't recommend Tough Build Masonry enough. They were honest, hard working and kept me in the loop throughout the entire process. Working with Masonworks has been a roller coaster. They are very, very good at the masonry aspect,…read morebut we had a negative experience with everything outside of the excellent stone walls and patio they built for us. They have built beautiful flat stone walls for us in our front and back yards. We were very impressed with them after the first job they did for us in our front yard a few years ago, so we did not even look at other companies when we wanted to spruce up our backyard this year. The garden walls they built in the backyard were once again beautiful. However, as a gardener, I was disappointed and frustrated by the following things: - Our contract included 50/50 loam compost for the new garden beds. During the job, we caught them filling the beds with the grass they had pulled up from our old lawn and asked them to stop doing that. - When I went to start planting, I found that the garden beds had only a layer of new soil but that my shovel quickly hit a lot of big rocks and uncovered old soil, debris, and trash. - They completely trampled and destroyed my established perennial garden, which was located in a garden bed above where the new beds were built. They also broke several pavers in a little garden path I had and removed them without replacing them. - They recommended microclover for my lawn and seeded it for us as part of the contract, but it grew in quite spotty despite us maintaining it properly with daily waterings. I contacted them about the first issue and their initial response was to tell me that the stones I was finding were part of the wall construction - this was not the case. They had someone come out to take a look and concluded that the soil did need to be replaced, which they finally did. It is much better now, though I still have found some large stones in it. However, in the process of solving that issue, they caused the second one - many of the perennials that my mother and I had worked to plant over the past four years were totally destroyed. They offered me a credit to compensate for the loss, or the option to have them reinstall new flowers, but by that point I just didn't want them near my garden anymore so accepted the credit. I didn't bother contacting them about the spotty lawn - I threw down some grass seeds yesterday to try and fill in the gaps. While I appreciated that they did eventually take steps to resolve the issues, I found it quite frustrating to have to keep reaching out just to get them to do what they really should have done in the first place. They never did a final walkthrough as I've seen other contractors do. No apology for destroying my garden. They have a Benjamin Franklin quote, "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten" - I definitely felt some of that bitterness throughout this process. My conclusion is that they are really excellent masons but do not understand or respect gardens. If you hire them, be prepared to have to deal with that.
