Since we were sort of the in the area for Anime Expo, we grabbed some Birdies for a brunch before heading to the con. We got the: 1) Birdie Bites: -Scrumptious pieces of boneless wings? Popcorn chicken? It's bite sized breaded chicken. -Nice and delicately crispy on the outside and moist chicken meat on the inside. Good for a snack. 2) Horchata Twist: -This just tastes like a cinnamon glazed donut. It's in a long braid shape and there's a bit of caramel drizzled on top. -Not bad but it's just a standard donut. 3) Potato Salad: -Decently sized container of potato salad. -Less mayo-y and more peppery than other potato salads and came with a decent amount of celery bits inside as well. 4) BYO Burrito: -We got this with scrambled eggs, tater tots, bacon, and caramelized onions. -It's a medium sized burrito lengthwise and is stuffed to the brim. A bit greasy from the tots and caramelized onions but they helped to moisten up the scrambled eggs. -Solid breakfast burrito. For the sauce we got the chipotle mayo which had a nice initial kick, smoky taste, and nice lasting heat. Went great with the Birdie Bites and the BYO burrito. I was on my way to get a salad at Chipotle and decided to have a cheat day and get Birdies. LOL. I have never been, but have always seen on list to try, so I was pretty excited. I came close to closing time so there were not a lot of people in the restaurant. I looked at the menu and initially wanted some tenders and side order of fries. The person working there recommended that I get the nuggets because it comes to fries. So, I decided on that and I also decided to get a few donuts. The food came out in about 10 minutes, the person working there (I wish I got his name) was so nice. I would say the service was excellent. I decided to take out my order since it was close to closing time. I would say that the chicken was pretty good. You can tell they use fresh oil because the color was golden. The fries were also pretty good. I would say that I wish the chicken had a little bit of seasoning on it because by itself, it was slightly bland. But, they did give 2 sauces. I tried the chipotle and ranch. I would definitely go for the ranch. It was creamy and delicious. I will definitely get that next time. As for the donuts, I tried the strawberry chocolate and horchata. I prefer the horchata. It was a good mix of cinnamon. I will definitely come back for a chicken and donut fix. One thing that I do want to mention that parking can be a little tricky here since it is in downtown LA. But, if you go during non peak times, it will be easier to find street parking. read more

The interior opts for an industrial-chic aesthetic. The exposed HVAC system and warm, filamentous globe lights hang from the tall ceilings. Black-and-white hexagon tile decorates the floors. The unadorned menu lays against the slate gray wall on the left, above a colorful pastry display with classic and adventurous donuts alike. Noncontiguous wooden counters and iron barstools run along the exposed brick wall to the right. Uptempo contemporary R&B mixes with chatter among the staff. I arrived during the late weekday lunch service, and there was only one other patron. I opted for a Horchata Twist. The donut itself was simultaneously fluffy and chewy, reminiscent of the best traditional corner store imaginable. The frosting was interesting and enjoyable but admittedly safe, more of a cinnamon-forward maple flavor than unabashedly horchata. My donut ran $3, while more expensive offerings ran as high as $4.25. Walking around at 10:30 AM looking for an open food place that's already serving lunch items and came across Birdie's, and we were reminded that we meant to come back to try their Chicken Sandwich. And we did. The Birdies Classic was delicious. That was a real whole piece of chicken bread, battered and fried to perfection. The bun was soft and warm. The coleslaw dressing was excellent. The Spicy Birdies Sandwich was also very good. The heat wasn't just coming from the sauce or batter: it was in the meat itself. At least that's what it felt like. There was no line to order. For parking you can find metered parking and it was around $2 for 2 hours which gave us plenty of time to feast. It is time for a review update. It's been about 6 years since my last visit and I don't know why I waited so long. My son and I came here on a Friday night after watching a show at the Microsoft theater. We ended up walking which was about a 12 min walk from the theater... We were greeted right away by Kai and Daniel. First off I have to say they were so niceeee. Daniel offered samples of their donuts. I really enjoyed the strawberry cream and my son liked the oreo donut. For our meal I ended up getting the original chicken sandwich and my son got the birdie bites with fries. I seriously forgot how amazing their chicken sandwich truly is. The blend of their sauce and the cheese and not to mention the warm brioche bun and that thick, juicy chicken. Holy moly that sucker was thick and so damnnnn juicyyyy. I savored every single bite and I truly was in heaven taking bite after bite. My son ate all of his birdie bites and enjoyed his meal as well. It was around 11pm and I was a little concerned for safety and Kai was so sweet and went ABOVE AND BEYOND by actually taking the time to walk us back half way so we were safe. Not many people would do this but he was so genuine and caring I will never forget this thoughtful gesture and I am deeply grateful for him keeping us safe. My son was very appreciative as well. It was late at night and I had a case of the munchies and decided to order up Birdies. I assumed the donuts would deliver fine, but that the sandwich would be tepid with soggy buns when it arrived. The opposite was true... I got the Original Chicken Sandwich, sauces on the side, and what arrived was so fresh, bursting with flavor, all on a fresh and bouncy bun. The shop only had counter seating available, which was all taken during our visit. However, there was one table outside that my friend and I sat at. The donuts were solid. Both of them were light and flaky, with great flavor. The Kobe Bryant donut had a nice vanilla glaze. And the pistachio lemon thyme, which had thicker icing and crushed pistachio nuts on top was also good, and I especially liked the lemon thyme flavor addition, which complemented the pistachio. If you're looking for a solid donut spot in downtown L.A., Birdies has your back. But if I were to visit again, I have my eye on a fried chicken sandwich, which I have a feeling is tasty. Hands down one of the best chicken sandwiches in Los Angeles and, quite frankly, one of the most underrated because I don't hear enough about Birdies! I stopped by Saturday around 2:00pm and it was pretty quiet but after I ordered, a lot more people came by. I definitely wanted to try a donut or two but I was too full from my meal so it looks like I'll be making another stop here in the future! I ordered the original Birdies sandwich with fries and a side of chipotle mayo, totaled about $17 which isn't bad at all considering the amount of food and ultimately the quality. Earlier in the day I had a coffee and scone nearby that cost $15 so the price here is not bad. I waited about 15 minutes as the orders are prepared fresh. My chicken sandwich was hot and looked amazing! The bun is soft and fluffy; the huge chicken breast is lightly battered but still crispy while the meat is juicy and tender. The cheese is melty, coleslaw fresh and crunchy, pickles slightly sour and crispy, and the buttermilk ranch is made just right. I tend to compare chicken sandwiches to Howlin Ray's as I consider them to be the absolute best in Los Angeles. Although Howlin has tremendous flavor in their spice levels, I sometimes opt for the country which has no spice and just "regular" flavorings and seasonings. Birdies is a very close second to that sandwich. The Birdies sandwich doesn't quite have that "pop" of flavor and uniqueness as far as seasonings, but the sandwich is executed so damn well and everything is prepared just as you want and like a simple chicken sandwich to be. The fries are also perfect - shoestring fries that are served hot, crispy, and just the right amount of salt. They definitely give you a generous portion too! Last but not least, the chipotle mayo is excellent. You're not overwhelmed by mayonnaise flavor and it really has a great kick of chipotle while keeping balanced flavors and not burning your mouth. It adds a perfect layer of flavor to the chicken sandwich. I would love to return for not only the donuts but also for their spicy and Nashville style sandwiches! Oh and the wings! read more
