Quiet little dive with a huge following in our area. They just added Edelwiess: The Crazy Bavarian Grill to their kitchen area. Fantastic, authentic Bavarian/German food from a first generation Bavarian chef who was taught by his mom "mutter" and grandmother "oma".
The portions were HUGE! The $25 Jaegerschnitzel was pounded to about 8-10 inches in diameter, but still only 1/4 inch thick. Yet, it was not dry at all, but perfectly cooked, crispy and well seasoned, without being salty. The sauce was mushroomy and sooo good! It came with 2 sides. I chose the spaetzle (the chef, J.D., claimed that it was sautéed with just sea salt and olive oil, but it had a nice little kick to it that was not from pepper), and sauerkraut - with caraway. The leftovers will be dinner tomorrow night with my own homemade spaetzle (I'll have to experiment to see what spice added the kick) and added sauerkraut.
The Schnitzel can come plain or with the Jaeger sauce, also have gruyere or a spicy Zigeuner sauce.
My husband had the schnitzel "burger" with gruyere. He said it was what he remembered from his time in Germany. Triple layers of schnitzle with, lettuce, tomatoes and mustard.
The menu also has a variety of 'würsts, including Curry Würst that has a sweet curry ketchup, and Rahm Curry Chicken with Spatzle (who knew curry was German... I didn't)!
Birchwood Saloon looks like a major dive on the outside, but inside it's smoke free, and relatively quiet. You feel safe there.... I would have no problem going there for dinner when my husband was busy, and not feel like I'd be threatened or hit on. The staff is friendly and treats you like they know you. This will be our new "Cheers"! read more
