But unfortunately the tech most recently assigned to our building has not been showing up on scheduled days. Or showing up but doing his best to avoid servicing the apartments. This means calling the office, trying to scheduling other times and coordinating being home an additioal day. I've had some very nice techs from ABCO throughout my many years in the same building, but currently, not so much. Mostly there is no knock on my door at all and the few times I have managed to hear him, he's knocking so, so, so lightly it is obvious the intention is not be heard. I know if he's getting past my apt so frequently (someone who really wants service), then he isn't servicing many other tenants either. (Many years ago my ABCO exterminator would chant EXTERMINATOR! up and down the stairwell, insuring everyone had an opportunity for service.) It's very frustrating and of course can lead to many pests in the building.

My building's management company uses Abco for all exterminating. They might be effective with…read moreother, less-difficult pests (though monthly spraying hasn't totally gotten rid of roaches), but they have been unable to effectively get rid of bedbugs in the building in the 3 years I've lived there. Getting rid of bedbugs requires clear communication and educating tenants on how to properly prepare for treatment and what to watch out for, and the technicians don't really do that. They also don't tell residents anything about the pesticides being used. Appointments are 4 hour windows (either the morning or the afternoon window, both of which require taking time off work from a 9-5 job), so you have to sit around waiting for them to show up. There are no updates during the course of the day to indicate when in that window the technician expects to show up. Most infuriatingly, 3.5hrs into a 4hr appointment window, I got a call cancelling the extermination and asking to reschedule because the technician "didn't have car access." He said he had also called our management company, but management had not received any such call. Exasperated, I asked why we hadn't been informed earlier (to avoid having to take the day off work and wasted a whole afternoon waiting around) and whether they could send another technician or otherwise solve the problem without having to reschedule for the following day. Rather than trying to problem-solve, he said "it is what it is and I don't know what else to tell you" and proceeding to imply that because our appointment had been rescheduled (the same day it was initially made, with no problems or concern on their end) we somehow were partially to blame. The whole situation was highly professional and very frustrating, which makes an already-unpleasant problem even more miserable. Having bugs in your apartment is the worst, but I imagine a competent, proactive extermination company makes it less terrible. Working with Abco, we wouldn't know.

We now have severe termite damage. I've now hired Orkin, accompanying their tech of their inspection and are now on a contract . I feel I can trust them. We were also getting charged $250 a visit for roach extermination and I discovered that the "technician" was just putting a few little dabs of Avion Syngenta gel (you can get a pack of four tubes for about about $35 on Amazon) into the hinges of cabinet doors. Now I do that myself every month and have things well under control at a fraction of the cost. I would never use Top Hat again.

Her latest excuse was that we didn't properly clear out the pantry. That's because Robin, I was clearing out the other rooms you decided you were not going to do. Of course you are canceling my warranty Robin you have my money now eh.? I was always hesitant about giving all these pest control companies my credit card. There answer: "its to protect us". I will alter this review if their work doesn't hold up, so please take comfort if this is still here and still has five stars three months from now.) The thing is, when I woke up this morning to find a live bedbug walking across my comforter in front of my nose, I instantly went into full panic mode--not because bedbug bites are so terrible (you'll survive)--but because the PROCESS is MISERABLE. Here was what was horrible BEFORE I found Ecology Ep: *Landlord pretended like he'd never heard of such a thing, and only begrudgingly sent his "exterminator" who sprayed with generic chemicals around the perimeter and left me with hopping mad bedbugs. (Note to 25 year old me: Small Claims Court is your friend.) *I was poor and as a result (or so I thought) the guy I could afford said that I had to do a lot of work on my own. Meaning: *Bagging up everything I owned. *Carrying everything that I could wash to the laundromat. *Dry cleaning what I could afford to dry clean and throwing away the rest. *Buying a new mattress cover and putting it on my infested mattress all by myself. *Throwing out half my furniture. *And even then he had to come back twice, probably because I didn't do everything correctly (given that I was doing it all by myself.) Arnold put me through none of that. It was AMAZING. Here's why: *Great price written right on the website--and LESS than what I paid in 2007. That's shocking--you'll see why in a minute--but it was also great because it meant I could call my landlords and say: "Here's what we're doing, THIS is the price, you're legally obligated to pay for it, and we're doing it tonight before the problem becomes insane. Also, it's coming out of my rent." They said, "Oh my god oh my god fine!" *They guaranteed the work at the industry standard, also right on the website. Another thing I could tell my landlords. *They're licensed and insured and used proper invoicing, also great for dealing with landlords. *Ecology Ep showed up the same day I called. *Arnold brought a small ARMY of people. Four workers, all very sweet. *The price INCLUDED mattress covers for my bed AND my futon. *THEY put the mattress covers on (the worst job ever.) *THEY moved all my furniture--but I didn't have to throw anything away! *THEY bagged up all the things that needed washing. *THEY helped me carry all my stuff to the laundromat. *Instead of putting me through the cost of dry cleaning, THEY brought a steam cleaner and steamed all my good clothes. *AND they didn't just spray with Ecologically sound (but guaranteed!) chemicals, but they ALSO sealed the cracks in my floors and steamed all my books and things I probably couldn't clean on my own. *AND they found the bedbug nest. And killed those jerks. *AND they were extremely kind and lovely about it, from beginning to end. A real plus when you're traumatized by bedbugs. Also, I asked Arnold to check another property while he was in the area, and he found no bedbugs. He could easily have sold me on more work, but he didn't lie, above-and-beyond compassion and professionalism I found consistent with the negative review and his response listed here. Frankly, his straightforward response to the negative review on his free service was an additional reason for me to hire him. Arnold told me he has a lot of contracts now with a lot of large shelters, dorms, and schools, and I believe it. As a young single woman, Ecology EP's help was enormous at an unbelievable price. I strongly recommend them to others who need help.
