Milano, Dec 2018, Day 1 - Una Cena "Is the kitchen open?" "Eh? Scusa?" Still shy to use Italian before English, but if it's going to make the difference between eating dinner and possibly not eating dinner, I'll sing Nella Fantasia (read: opera piece) if I have to. "È aperto la cucina?" "Si, prego!" Magic words lead me to my tavola, and short, dark, handsome with his hair fantastically flaring up comes over. "Dimi, cara." Tell me, sweetheart. I'm amused that it's so naturally built in, the female appreciation, the ever-slight tinge of flirtatiousness, even into the very first words of my waiter. No hi, no welcome, just straight to business. If this is what it's like at a restaurant, what's it like at clubs? I ask for a recommendation between 3 pastas. I always love good spaghettoni and that with clams and bottarga (dried mullet roe) sounds amazing - and I don't always love gnocchi but with goat ricotta and grilled prawn in its own juices? Then there's the one made with paccheri - lemongrass, bacon, and squid: not a combination I've ever conceived of before. What were paccheri again? "Quali sono i paccheri? E come sono?" "I paccheri sono come i rigatoni ma sono più grandi.... they are like rigatoni but bigger. Do you like them big?" Verbatim - and at this point, he's motioning a tube with his hand and another hand near entering it. I look at his poker face and can't tell whether this is an innuendo or whether I'm a sensitive American woman and he's earnestly trying to explain what paccheri are. I assume the latter and go with that dish. The glass of white I had ordered comes out first in a Rastal glass resembling Riedel albeit not as thin-lipped. It's so characteristically Sauvignon Blanc but I wonder whether it's a Pinot Grigio as I'm in Italy and I don't know whites very well - all I can say is I love it. It's so fragrant and not flat despite being €6 a glass. I sip my white as I wait. It's 10:10pm. The restaurant is packed. But we are not in the southern parts where people are loud and short of screaming - people speak in hushed animation, respectfully and intimately. I love how closely they sit, how subtly yet continuously animate their hands. My pasta comes, and it's a beautiful, fragrant thing. The lemongrass is ever aromatic and the rendered bacon throws its weight in gold in its fatty glory. And the bands of squid - they perch petite and delicate atop the thick sauce and pasta. The paccheri indeed are big. Round. They are more like how soft, loose bands of harder pappardelle would be if enclosed rather than bearing any resemblance of rigatoni. I cut a piece in half and scoop the saucy ensemble into my mouth. God freaking bless this country. And the chef inside that kitchen. My first meal in this city this year couldn't have been better - and to know that this was a street find. I had walked to a researched Osteria Lanterna earlier only to learn that "La cucina chiude alle 10pm" - walked in at 9:59 and the kitchen was closing at 10. So. I couldn't be happier with my night at Bio. 45 minutes later and beyond satisfied - I am happy overall and happy I gave the place a chance. So the next time you see a restaurant packed at 10pm, walk in, and take the recommendation from your local waiter - no matter whether you question your own judgment. Even if his gaze later as you leave is more extended than you're used to back home. _ * Paccheri saltati with lemongrass, calamari, and pancetta * Wine pairing: 448 Girlan, Sauvignon Blanc

Still craving for Bio Pizza's seafood linguine. My friend and I visited on a Wednesday night, impressed by the cozy ambience and by the number of customers. While I knew that I should order a pizza to test out the merits of the name, I was craving for seafood and hot pasta so I took a chance. And boy, am I glad I did! I think Bio Pizza served up one of the best seafood linguine I have ever tasted. Not only was there ample shrimp, octopus, and mussels, but they were seasoned perfectly and cooked delicately. The pasta sauce - a light olive dressing with parsley and some other goodness - coated each pasta with deliciousness. I was so in love with the seafood linguine that I returned with my friend the very next day and ordered the same!

This place was a 5 minute walk from my hotel and I was looking for some takeout pizza. This place doesn't look like much from the outside but it is great! The prices are very reasonable and I got two pizzas tot ale back to the room for dinner. I had a beer while I waited and the waiter gave me a small plate of bread slices to munch on while I waited. The pizzas were ready quite quickly and my wife and I enjoyed them. The next night we came back to dine inside and we liked our dinner of another shared pizza and the risotto. I'd definitely come back here if I ever stay in this area of Milan again!

Expected more of my Pizza Capriosa. Crust not done properly. Prices OK for quick pizza, locals had better Looking dishes (they know what is good?).

The main course for the others was various pastas, including a great carbonara, while I had a terrific Osso Bucco.

I literally wrote 4 paragraphs and Yelp glitched and deleted my draft…read more Please make sure to ask them to charge you in Euros because we didn't get the option by the owner and he charged us in USD which costs us more. He's been in business for 44 years so obviously he knows but still charged us in USD which is kinda shady IMO. We decided to dine here due to all the reviews and photos posted. When we approached the restaurant, the owner immediately said "Ni Hao" which I thought was kinda racist. What if I wasn't Chinese? Mink felt offended but we committed to dining there so we did. He asked if we wanted to dine inside or outside. Since it was chilly for Mink, we opted to dine inside where it was 90% full due to a Chinese tour group. They all had the same dish so we figured preset menu for them. I wasn't sure what I was going to get but since they all ate the Ossobuco con risotto alla Milanese in Crosta, I decided to order that as it was one of the dishes I was considering. Mink ordered their Spaghetti ai frutti di mare. I'm not sure why but the owner exclusively took care of us. He also made it a point to bring a photo over of Jay Chow saying he's dined there 4-5 times in the last few years. Maybe that's why the Chinese tour group eats there? He was arrogant enough to brag about how much money he's made because of Jay Chow. There were lots of celebrities that dined there from what gathered looking at his wall of fame. I bet he didn't charge any of them in USD *smh* The Ossobuco con risotto alla Milanese in Crosta was really good and probably the best we had in Milan. They must be able to make this dish with their eyes closed at this point with the daily Chinese tour groups dining there. Their Spaghetti ai frutti di mare was decent but didn't have as much seafood in the dish as other restaurants and the flavor was about average. The bread and EVOO offered was legit though! I loved it and I normally hardly ever eat the complimentary bread. Food is good overall and customer service felt extra. If we didn't get charged USD, wasn't getting bragged to about how much money he made off Jay Chow and wasn't greeted with a "Ni Hao" then the place is 4 stars. Since all that did happened, 2.5 stars.
