This doesn't look too impressive, but I promise, these gao bao were looovely

We were planning to try somewhere else last night, but i was so intrigued by Bintang's menu, that we stopped here instead. I am reeeally glad that we did! Bingtang is squished into a teeny, slightly hipsterish café, with a relaxed atmosphere and chilled music. The menu is a mix of Korean, Taiwanese and South east Asian dishes. There seems to be a Japanese influence, but no Japanese food. Food: **** Gua Bao - Oh my goodness I want this again! These are fluffy steamed Taiwanese buns filled with meat (the duck was particularly gorgeous), peanuts and a hint of wasabi. They were seriously moorish! **** Korean Chicken wings - fried with really tasty seasoning, then dunked in sesame, they come with barbecue sauce . These were soooo good, The meat fell off the bones it was sooo tender. Om nom nom. I didn't take a photo because we ate them so speedily. Oops. *** Prawn tempura - the batter wasn't really tempura, it was thiner/crunchier but still yummy. These prawns were slathered in wasabi mayo, but also came with a soy-based dip. I did like them, but they didn't blow me away like the gua boa or chicken wings. *** The bintang noodles were also pretty nice - slightly spicy, and the lemongrass gave them a delicious fresh flavour. **Marc's tip** Single men should come to this restaurant! Last night it was crammed with groups of really pretty girls (apart from us!!) **Pro-yelp tip** If you check in between 5-7pm, you can get a starter and a main for £10. Bargain!!

We are visiting from the New York and stopped in for a late evening meal. We're a huge fan of BYOB restaurants back home so this was a great selling point. The back garden was very pleasant and the food was exceptional and affordable, at least compared to what we are used to.

A small, dimly lit cafe in the middle of a slightly shady part of the Kentish Town Road serving Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian and Singaporian cuisine. The lighting in the restaurant is perfect and the teak and bamboo walls make it an intimate location for a romantic date. The menu is quite extensive but luckily prices are so low that you can afford to get a few extra dishes and share them between you. A massive plus for me is that they operate a bring-your-own alcohol policy, which keeps the prices down hugely.

I live not far away from bintang. For 2 years, I walk by this place at least few times a week and never went in. Gotta admit this place looks a bit shady from the outside. Out of curiosity however, my bf and I went in for dinner one day. Bam! It immediately became one of our most favorite neighborhood places. Great dishes include: 1. Shrimp tempura - interesting mix of mango salsa, fish roe and crispy shrimp. 2. Seabass- we like both of the seabass dishes. 3. Lamb rengtang: slightly hot, lots of spice. Yum. 4. Brussel sprout: simply yum! The service is friendly but slightly slow... Oh well. You can bring your own bottle with a small corkage fee as they don't serve alcohol.

I'd heard good things and the reviews aren't bad which I think made my disappointment with Bintang greater. The venue is quite funky and it there was a constant flow of people which I guess means people like this place but I just wasn't impressed. We started with the Gao bao that seemed to get quite a lot of love in other reviews, the bun was chewy as was the duck...overall not great. Moving on to the Sisak curry, this again came with chewy meat (beef this time), a bit of gristle / bone didn't help much either it had a Panang kind of taste but was definitely missing something..... Perhaps a bit more sweetness? There was a good amount of heat to it though served on fried rice which was ok(ish). The last thing was the pad Thai which was stodgy and not too generous on the prawns. Two meals, gao bao's and corkage for a beer each came to £35, which felt like quite a lot for what we ate. Don't think it'll make my regular list, shame.

Unfortunately I can't say anything about the restaurant because I ordered take-away, but I'm still allowed a review right? I wouldn't have written one if it was bad, but the Prawn Laksa dish was absolutely wonderful. Full of bold, delicious flavours and massive shrimp. A really big portion, I was impressed.

This place is AMAZING!!! The dishes here are so well thought out and the flavors are delicious. Not to mention, the decor and ambiance just sets the place so well. If I lived here in the UK, I'd be here all the time. Definitely recommend this place to anyone coming to London!!

Bintang in Kentish Town is the little spot with a big voice. Further up from the tourist mecca and party paradise that is Camden, is this star. Yes, in Indonesia Bintang means star, so star by name, star by nature. What first strikes you is just how down to earth the place is. It is certainly not about being the great pretender here. Out goes the fancy schmancy decor or attempt at too much Asian design authenticity; what remains is real and raw with an emphasis on practicality and comfort. There is even a secret garden at the back if you fancy braving the ever changing UK elements. The restaurant opens onto Kentish Town Road so your entertainment is a mixture of your dining companions, fellow diners and the colourful characters that sashay past the window. Kentish Town is very residential. This bit specifically, is quite urban, so there is a melting pot of class and culture who live side by side. Bintang appears to follow the same theme with a diverse Asian menu covering places like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Indonesia. What they have done here is taken the best bits of what is the largest continent and put it in a pretty little package for you to enjoy near the comfort of your own home. No long haul flights for this treat. There are a couple of things to note about this magical place. You can bring your own wine and pay corkage of £5 a bottle. Conveniently, there is an off licence two doors down. They only accept cash. Again, the off licence ticks that box with its machine which unfortunately charges £1.89. Now the basics are covered (and you have booked a table because it is popular), you can settle down to scan through the menu. As I said, the menu is like the Eastern portion of the Silk Route (an ancient trade route from China to Europe specialising in Chinese Silk). For my starter I went for chicken and spring onion dumplings (Chinese). Now this gyoza was very interesting, in that it was much slimmer and transparent than ones I have had before. In fact, I really enjoyed it as the filling was as prominent as the sticky case holding it together. Jacki had salt and pepper squid with taramind (Chinese). Delish with lashings of lime squeezed over it. My original main was supposed to be the baby chicken inasal, which is a pandan marinated dish from the Philippines with notes of lemongrass, ginger and soy. Unfortunately they had already served the last portion, so having pouted a little, I got over it and ordered Pad Thai. Yes, I know that this is the go-to asian option more most people, so one should be more experimental. Especially when one is writing a review! However, their take on this dish surprised me. Firstly, there was a solid quota of king prawn. Then, for me Pad Thai can normally be too dry but this had a moistness and sauce to it, which made it more interesting. Jacki had the lamb rendang (Malaysian). Now, this piece of meat was slow cooked on the bone, so it literally melted away as she pierced it with her fork. Rendang carries some weight having been voted the no 1 dish on an online poll of 35,000 by CNN back in 2011. Having had a taste of the tender pink lamb meat, I could understand why Jacki was prepared to go back in time to log her vote. Sides were unnecessary as the portions are huge! Not knowing that, we had some coconut rice and garlic spinach. The great thing about ordering too much, is that you get to take it home. This made for a great lunch at the office the next day thank you very much. A fantastic food journey across Asia from the comfort of this smart little friendly joint. The menu is halal, vegetarian and vegan friendly, so it pleases just about everyone. The staff are sweet with a very funny Irish waitress who had us in stitches with an anecdote about apple sauce and tomato ketchup. Bravo.

We had a fresh surprise going into the restaurant which was full upstairs but intimate downstairs, where you can "bring you own" wine. We had a very tasty and spicy tofu & aubergine Bintang special as well as a cauliflower buka suka.

The sauteed bok choy with garlic was my favorite! It helps that you can bring your own wine in for a teeny tiny corkage fee :)

Review Highlights - Bintang Restaurant

Didn't love the cash only aspect, which was odd since there was an ask for £10 per person on a credit card to make a reservation.

In a related and very lovely gesture, the server brought me a complimentary mutton roll (with chilli ketchup) and said they usually send something on the house for solo diners :) The roll was delicious -- savoury mutton without a strong game-y flavour that went really nicely with the mildly spicy ketchup. I decided to have an order of the Lankan chicken kari paired with a hopper. I did not know what a hopper was before then (let alone seen one), so it was an interesting surprise when I was served this unevenly thick, bowl-shaped rice pancake. Fortunately, I did not go wrong with this choice, as the hopper was so delicious. The light rice-based flavour of the hopper paired so nicely with the rich, slightly spicy curry and the tender and savoury chicken, and I really liked the textural variety of the hopper itself (thicker, spongier base and thinner, crispier sides). The ratio of hopper to curry was not quite right, though, so I ended up ordering another roti to enjoy the remaining half of my curry and chicken. The roti was really delicious -- fluffy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside -- and similarly paired super well in carrying the curry flavour. All in all, price point was pretty solid for the quality and amount of food. I thought the hopper was pricier than expected, but conversely the curry was less so -- so overall it all seemed quite reasonable. I would love the chance to come visit again and try more of their deliciously fragrant curry options next time.

The place was quite busy, and interestingly, the same person taking orders was also cooking. It's a very small setup--definitely not meant for dining in. The vibe is more like "grab your food and head out." We ordered chicken egg fried rice and chicken chow mein. Watching the food being cooked right in front of us was fascinating--quick, high heat, and full of action. Once we got our order, we sat outside to eat. The first thing I noticed was that the food was quite oily. More disappointing, though, was that I couldn't find any chicken in my fried rice--even though I had paid extra for it. I went back, showed them, and asked if chicken had been added. They bluntly said "yes" and didn't bother to check further, which was frustrating That said, the food itself tasted good overall. It's just that the oiliness and the lack of proper service took away from the experience. I wouldn't say I won't visit again--it feels more like an off day--but I was definitely expecting better service.

They were going to try to accommodate us but luckily we were able to sort things out. We were first sat at the bar and given the wine menu. It was odd because I really wanted the drink menu, I wasn't even sure if there was one at that point. I don't drink alcohol and needed the drink menu which I didn't get to see until we sat down. My husband ordered lemongrass cha and kakigori (his favorite). I had the Sakura spritz (non alcoholic). I was delighted that we were seated right against the glass edge. We enjoyed the view very much. We considered getting the signature set menu but there were some dishes that were not on there. In the end, we spent more than what the signature menu would have cost us oops. Pea guac- my first time having pea guac it was a good starter Duck salad - this was good Sakura Salmon- this was delicious, I'm not sure what is Sakura about it though Waygu goyza- Waygu was cooked perfectly but the star of this dish is not the wagyu the taste is over powered by the outer shell and the oils. Definitely one of those places where you walk in and immediately think "okay this is going to be great." Unfortunately, the actual experience didn't really match the setting for us. The drinks were good, but not particularly memorable considering the price point and reputation. The bigger issue was the service. We were seated at a shared high top next to another couple and then waited around 25 minutes before anyone took our order. After that, it was another long wait before the drinks actually arrived. By the time we finally got them, the whole vibe had kind of faded for us and we ended up leaving after one round. I still think it's worth stopping by for the views alone, but overall the experience felt more style over substance than I hoped for.
