What can one say about the first pub they visit in the Irish country side, especially after an (what felt like) eternity on an airplane, and a 2 hour drive on the wrong side of the road? Is this review slightly biased? Did I see the world though jetlagged eyes? Yes absolutely, but who the hell cares; Bill hooked me up with my first pint after one long journey from NYC and I will be forever grateful for it. Walking in, we found a well sized pub with a nice selection of beers on tap. The usual selection of Smithwick's, Harp, Bulmer's cider were to be found, and I couldn't have been happier to see them waiting for me. The first thing that really struck me however was the music. How could we have known that Bill Chawkes was voted the number one country bar in Ireland? So while we were sipping on our pints Shania Twain and Toby Keith sang about pickup trucks and broken hearts.......just what we were looking for in Ireland, American rednecks haha. Again though we were exhausted and thrilled to be anywhere that had a cold pint and some food. We made our way to the nicely sized backyard and found a nice table in the shade. After a few minutes (and a few rounds) we ordered up a bite to eat; I had the burger (Irish beef is awesome), and my date had the chicken curry. As soon as the curry came out I knew I had made a terrible mistake, as it smelled like heaven (tasted like it too) but alas I had to settle for "curry fries" which were almost as good. Like I said maybe it was the jetlag, or the thrill of finally making it to our destination (or both), but this was one of the nicest meals I had on the whole trip. If you are in Adare, Bill Chawkes is absolutely worth checking out; good food, great location, and a lively crowd in the evening - you can't go wrong. read more

As the first Irish bar that I visited, Bill Chawkes Pub has a special place in my heart. Chawkes is a large pub with a great back yard space. It was still early so there was just a large party in the yard and a few locals sitting around the bar. Since it was such a pleasant day, we opted to sit out back to enjoy our first official Irish pints and lunch. The yard's walls are covered in old timey cigarette and alcohol ads with large statues of men and their dogs. The only thing that was slightly off putting was the american country music pouring out of the speakers. Once I got over the initial shock of realizing that Shania Twain, Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks were here to stay, I settled in. I just took it as a sign that Ireland was welcoming us with an easy transition. The bar tender was a friendly gentleman that helped us pick brews and took our orders after a few drinks. Even though we were outside, he was attentive and timely with service. As we enjoyed the afternoon, we got to meet another American couple that had been visiting Ireland. It was nice to get their opinions of what they've done and where we might look into going. Although, when the food arrived, we couldn't help but ignore them while we dug in. I had made a choice to eat local cuisine while in Ireland so I had chosen the chicken curry (diced chicken in a thick curry sauce served with rice). It was just delightful. My date had ordered the cheeseburger and french fries which was also quite good. The beef is certainly a different flavor over in Ireland and the french fries were great (especially dipped in the curry). The environment is great, food is fantastic and service is well done. What more could a person look for in a local pub. I would be happy to return to this little quaint town and, of course, I'd make sure to have my first pint here. read more

Food is GREAT! Fun environment with great beer on tap. The fish and chips come with a green salad and mushy peas. There is a beer garden off the back of the pub! You have to walk to the end of town but it is worth it. read more

This Pub has some GREAT character! Food (vegetable soup and curry) was pretty solid, although the curry could use some vegetables or something else in addition to the good curry sauce and chicken. Younger wait staff could have maybe been more attentive but if you don't mind waiting a few minutes you are taken care of. I was surprised it wasn't busier on a Sunday night, it was well worth the visit. read more

Decent food, but nothing outstanding. Pizza was a little bland. The chicken burger is a Tyson's chicken patty (the frozen kind) on big bun, so not worth the price. Burger my husband had was good. Guinness was good. Overall probably not go back unless for drinks. read more

This pub has been around at least 30-40 years, as long as I can remember my father going in there for a pint and I'm 53!! It's family owned low key, typical Irish pub in Ireland. It is a favorite of the locals and in here you will mainly meet local people, unlike other touristy pubs & establishments in Adare Village. They serve bar food all day & they expanded in recent years, now having a small area to dance if you are so inclined They have a nice patio area out back with heaters for those cold chilly windy days. It's not unusual for this pub & actually all pubs to still be serving well after closing, 1-2am. It's actually normal behavior for locals to leave the house & go out around 9:30 - 10pm for a pint. They play Irish Traditional music and a LOT of country music as do most pubs in Ireland. Ireland loves country music and you will hear it in almost every pub in the country, unless you are in a hip hop club or disco for young people, but in Rural Ireland expect country & traditional music. It's a fun place and is very very busy on weekend days and nights. They serve an awesome Irish coffee and an even better Irish Whiskey. Perfect for those numerous cold blustery days. If in Adare, pop in, a different clientele to Dunraven or the Manor. A different side to observe and away from the typical touristy spots. read more

We loved Bill Chawke's! This was our go-to when we were out and about and wanted to grab a drink or food. Great service, good drinks. One of the days we were in there it was fairly empty and the music was awful...but maybe one of the servers was having their turn at controlling the music heheh.
