What can one say about the first pub they visit in the Irish country side, especially after an (what felt like) eternity on an airplane, and a 2 hour drive on the wrong side of the road? Is this review slightly biased? Did I see the world though jetlagged eyes? Yes absolutely, but who the hell cares; Bill hooked me up with my first pint after one long journey from NYC and I will be forever grateful for it.
Walking in, we found a well sized pub with a nice selection of beers on tap. The usual selection of Smithwick's, Harp, Bulmer's cider were to be found, and I couldn't have been happier to see them waiting for me. The first thing that really struck me however was the music. How could we have known that Bill Chawkes was voted the number one country bar in Ireland? So while we were sipping on our pints Shania Twain and Toby Keith sang about pickup trucks and broken hearts.......just what we were looking for in Ireland, American rednecks haha. Again though we were exhausted and thrilled to be anywhere that had a cold pint and some food. We made our way to the nicely sized backyard and found a nice table in the shade.
After a few minutes (and a few rounds) we ordered up a bite to eat; I had the burger (Irish beef is awesome), and my date had the chicken curry. As soon as the curry came out I knew I had made a terrible mistake, as it smelled like heaven (tasted like it too) but alas I had to settle for "curry fries" which were almost as good. Like I said maybe it was the jetlag, or the thrill of finally making it to our destination (or both), but this was one of the nicest meals I had on the whole trip.
If you are in Adare, Bill Chawkes is absolutely worth checking out; good food, great location, and a lively crowd in the evening - you can't go wrong. read more
