Great Food Great Service, a pleasure to dine here. Fish was lightly breaded and delicious. Wife enjoyed the beef stew and could hardly finish it.

Outstanding fish and chips and beef and Guinness pie (though not a fan of their mushy peas), plenty of seating, warm/inviting atmosphere, quick service. A great lunch stop!

    So adorable.

Adare is a lovely small town. The roofs are straw thatched, the building are quaint and the bars are sparse. Of the 4ish bars along the main stretch, Aunty Lena's will jump at you from the start. It is painted a gaudy gold color (that I love) with flowers lining the windows and a portrait of an elderly woman on the side of the building. We took a tour of the town on a Friday and quickly learned there were at least two wedding parties taking to the local bars. Sadly they had packed into Aunty's so we passed it by and took our first Irish pints in a bar down the street. Later that evening, when the parties had moved to different locations, we were able to stop in. It is a rather large with a full bar and dining area. The bartenders were very friendly and service was quick. We did not have any meals here but the french fries were very good. The bar always had seats available and the locals and visitors were pleasant to talk to. They do have WiFi and if i recall correctly it is just the bar name all lowercase. The ambiance was quiet and dim with great old world decor and feel. Of course, I'm always a sucker for copper bar counters! After a long day of driving to places like Cork or Galway, it was nice to stop in for a few pints before heading back home for a quick night's sleep. It's weird enough to drive on the wrong side of the road and we were certainly not dumb enough to drink and drive that way!

We just had drinks but the bartenders are great. They have live music every night and do traditional Irish on Friday nights.

Food is very good, portions are HUGE, prices reasonable. Neither my husband nor I could finish our plates, despite both having excellent flavor. I had the bangers and mash. I was served 3 homemade bangers atop a large mound of chunky mashed potatoes, served with a carrot purée and onion ale gravy. Hubby had the prawn cocktail wrap, which was served with a very generous helping of fries and a nice side salad. Definitely enough to share.

Sitting in the heart of town, Aunty Lena's is the first pub most people set eyes on when they visit Adare. You have to give it to the Irish; in a town with only one intersection they have a surprising number of places to grab a drink (good on you guys). Walking in you get the sense that this place has seen its fair share of faces, and that this is where the sports loving locals come on a nightly basis. I say sports loving, as they had quite a few TVs hanging on the walls and some sporting event or another is always on (be it a horse race, football, or my new favorite thing in the world - hurling). This would have absolutely where we would have had our first pint in the countryside (like I said it's got the prime location in town), but it was hosting a wedding party - pretty sure the last thing the happy couple wanted hear was a couple of soon to be drunk Americans commenting on how quaint their village was. We did end up here that night, after putting a few back at Bill Chawkes down the (one and only) road. Finding a stool at the bar, we quickly ordered up a couple of pints and got to people watching. This place was the real deal, old guys talking about sports, young guys goofing around; the crowed was really lively and fun to be a part of. The food looked kind of hit or miss, and we had just eaten at Bills (good, albeit lucky choice). We did split an order of chips, which were good; but then again, you would be hard pressed to find a place that messes chips up. Honestly this place is much more a bar than it is a restaurant, if you are looking for a quiet place for dinner this is not it. All in all, this is a good place to see how the locals in Adare do it after a long day; the mood is fun and alive. I would recommend this place for a pint, but find someplace else for food (Pat Collins down the road has great fish and chips).

    Walking in.

Is this review slightly biased? Did I see the world though jetlagged eyes? Yes absolutely, but who the hell cares; Bill hooked me up with my first pint after one long journey from NYC and I will be forever grateful for it. Walking in, we found a well sized pub with a nice selection of beers on tap. The usual selection of Smithwick's, Harp, Bulmer's cider were to be found, and I couldn't have been happier to see them waiting for me. The first thing that really struck me however was the music. How could we have known that Bill Chawkes was voted the number one country bar in Ireland? So while we were sipping on our pints Shania Twain and Toby Keith sang about pickup trucks and broken hearts.......just what we were looking for in Ireland, American rednecks haha. Again though we were exhausted and thrilled to be anywhere that had a cold pint and some food. We made our way to the nicely sized backyard and found a nice table in the shade. After a few minutes (and a few rounds) we ordered up a bite to eat; I had the burger (Irish beef is awesome), and my date had the chicken curry. As soon as the curry came out I knew I had made a terrible mistake, as it smelled like heaven (tasted like it too) but alas I had to settle for "curry fries" which were almost as good. Like I said maybe it was the jetlag, or the thrill of finally making it to our destination (or both), but this was one of the nicest meals I had on the whole trip. If you are in Adare, Bill Chawkes is absolutely worth checking out; good food, great location, and a lively crowd in the evening - you can't go wrong.

It was still early so there was just a large party in the yard and a few locals sitting around the bar. Since it was such a pleasant day, we opted to sit out back to enjoy our first official Irish pints and lunch. The yard's walls are covered in old timey cigarette and alcohol ads with large statues of men and their dogs. The only thing that was slightly off putting was the american country music pouring out of the speakers. Once I got over the initial shock of realizing that Shania Twain, Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks were here to stay, I settled in. I just took it as a sign that Ireland was welcoming us with an easy transition. The bar tender was a friendly gentleman that helped us pick brews and took our orders after a few drinks. Even though we were outside, he was attentive and timely with service. As we enjoyed the afternoon, we got to meet another American couple that had been visiting Ireland. It was nice to get their opinions of what they've done and where we might look into going. Although, when the food arrived, we couldn't help but ignore them while we dug in. I had made a choice to eat local cuisine while in Ireland so I had chosen the chicken curry (diced chicken in a thick curry sauce served with rice). It was just delightful. My date had ordered the cheeseburger and french fries which was also quite good. The beef is certainly a different flavor over in Ireland and the french fries were great (especially dipped in the curry). The environment is great, food is fantastic and service is well done. What more could a person look for in a local pub. I would be happy to return to this little quaint town and, of course, I'd make sure to have my first pint here.

I enjoyed the flavors and there was an interesting dried fruit of some sort that made this dish fun. I was hoping to have a little more greenery/salad/lettuce in the dish mainly because that's what I was expecting and in the mood for when I ordered the salad, but the flavors were overall quite good Braised beef special - This was delicious. Very tender, well seasoned, and accompanied by some delicious sauces. I really enjoyed this dish. House fish pie - This was also quite delicious with a crispy bread crumb topping and baked with generous amounts of fresh fish. This was a really enjoyable dish as well. Overall really enjoyed dinner here. Reservations are recommended. I made a last minute weekday reservation and was able to get a slot later in the night. Ambiance was pleasant.
