The big y in Peabody is a clean store, nice workers, the deli,veggies and sea food is very good,I'm enjoy the shopping experience.

I could say a lot of things about this particular location, none of them good. First off, you know you're suppose to take old food off the shelves? How hasn't Peabody's BoH shut you down, or do they just not announce fines? Stay completely away from their produce and check all dates. Even if it's something that normally has a shelf life of years. Whole store could use a bit of cleaning. Pretty sure the 'flower girl' is on something, like wtf. Ironically her mask is never on her. I don't normally make a habit of reviewing supermarkets, but this was prompted to me and I saw a weirdly low review. I live right around the corner from Big Y and work from home, so I often pop in here in the middle of the day for groceries or just to grab some sushi for lunch. I have no idea if the (maybe fictional?) terrible employees mentioned elsewhere are no longer there, but everyone I've ever dealt with during the dozens of visits I have made to the West Peabody location has been nothing but super pleasant and very helpful. Sure, the prices are higher than Market Basket (whose aren't, I ask) but for convenience and quality of goods I have no problem spending a little extra. The bags are a bit flimsy admittedly, but if you don't pack them too full and grab the handles like a lunatic they do the job. Otherwise, you can do what I do and (gasp) use reusable bags whenever possible. Anyway, I just saw bad reviews for a good spot and thought I would contribute my two cents, which are very different from the rest here. Second time we purchased marinated tips from the meat market. Once again extremely disappointed. Both times (lamb tips & Steak tips) the marinade was disguising tips that were mostly fat and that could not be sold without the marinade. Had to throw away more than half of what we bought. Big Y always has a great selection, including fresh produce. The store is clean with very organized aisles. My favorite grocery store.

Big Y is a great market for many things. First of all, their blueberry muffins are the best. They are fresh and delicious from the bakery section. I also like their fresh made croissants and rolls. Go early in the day or they might be all gone. Right by the bakery, Big Y sells coffee. For 99 cents it is self serve and convenient. I've tried their clam chowder and it's not bad. Their lobster rolls are okay in a pinch. Their deli has excellent quality meats. Over Easter, their corned beef was the best I've ever had. Their oven toasted turkey breast is super clean and tastes great. I find their prices to be about average and the quality is on point. I only shop here when visiting from out of town. It is nice to know that I could grab some items and check out quickly. The staff were always friendly and helpful. read more

I agree with John. I go to six different stores and only the bags at Big Y are so flimsy that even half full they fall apart! It seems like the Business Manager went out of her way to avoid the point. It's not paper bags in general that fall apart, it's Big Y's paper bags specifically that fall apart and they have the gall to charge you for them! Other than that it's a good place. Worst customer care ever! I was there Friday night. Melissa, a front end worker thought it was okay to share her political opinion of why there are shortages of workers (like nearly 700,000 dead wouldn't impact that). Following it with "I'm gonna puss some people off by saying this but". She's apparently not a fan of President Biden. Mind you I don't care about her politics BUT when you're broadcasting your ignorance at your workplace, you reap what you sow. I'd say grab your MAGA hat from your locker and clock out, Melissa. Good People, Nice management, BUT for the xteenth time as I take my groceries out of My vehicle, the bag explodes, rips, tears whatever you want to call it, and Eggs all over the ground. Eggs don't hit the ground every time but the bags Rip, every time I shop there, and they know it, they charge a bag which I don't care about, but the bags are intentionally made weak by corporate in my opinion to get you not to use them. No other place that I shop does this happen. Recently moved around the corner from here in west peabody, come here often, nice store, have most things I need, not the best prices, and some less than happy to be there employees in the front end, somehow no one ever working in the bakery. But over all, the pizza is great, bakery items are delish and it's a stones throw away from my house. read more

This was my favorite supermarket up until last night. I loved the fact the place was deserted all the time. Every isle I go down I would be the only shopper in it. Nobody in my way. Prices are much higher than all the local stores but that's ok I don't like dealing with people so everything was great. Yesterday the prices on a certain pizza were marked down on clearance and it rang up full price. I tried to get a price adjustment to no avail. Asked for a manager and when omar came I wanted to show him in the isle the hang tag was wrong and he said "I dont have to do that". I walked out with my over charged pizza and will work with the consumer protection div of the AG to get my money back the hard way. Unreal. So sad I really liked this dead store with hardly any customers in it. Always handicap parking available...no lines...I will miss you. Overpriced. Third word produce. Tacky discount "coins." We stopped going here shortly after Hannaford sold to Big Y. The drop off in quality and increase in prices is ridiculous. The produce quality has also dropped substantially. It might be good enough to last two days after you bring it home. The coins they give you after you buy X amount of groceries are beyond tacky. Gee I can get a loaf of Italian bread for $1 off or a sheet cake for $2 off, thanks. I'll be sure to carry these around with all the other change I have in my pocket. I stopped to pick up a few things at Big Y Supermarket and Guess what? They-didn't have the items...they were all sold out. What kind of supermarket does this.? This was not the first time I tried to shop and pick up food items in a rush. They have your everyday shopping items only sometimes. Also, asked a stock person for certain beverage he was directing me to Coke a Cola products?? Found out later he worked for Coke a Cola.... very sleazy move and very unprofessional!! You have to watch ur receipt as twice now they scanned in products twice. I had to go back. Their prepared meals are good. They are very high compared to Stop and Shop. Their seafood is very good. I have heard very mixed opinions regarding the changeover of the West Peabody Hannaford to Big Y. Most negative feedback concerns the prices, which some claim to be higher than Hannaford's, but I am inclined to disagree. I have not noticed any real increase in my grocery bill shopping Big Y versus Hannaford. Did the pricing structure even change I wonder? Market Basket still has an advantage on some items in the grocery section as I pointed out in my Hannaford review, but overall, the shopping experience is pleasant and, at least for me, the convenience of location makes it my regular store to shop. A couple of big changes from Hannaford. First off, you now need a member card to get sale prices. Not a huge deal, and the cashiers are excellent about reminding you to present it. Your member account keeps track of your spending and every $500 spent earns you a gold coin that can be used for even bigger discounts on a specific list of sale items. I have yet to be able to use one, but as with the card, the cashiers can tell if you've purchased any coin-eligible items and ask if you have any to use. Nice that you don't have to think too much about it. You also get to play a slot machine game at the register that could win you more coins or coupons. Yes, it's a little gimmicky, but I like it. It's the level of gambling I'm comfortable with and a much shorter drive than going to Foxwoods. Other big change is the checkout line setup. No longer one big line with a director of sorts telling you which register to go to. Now it's a free for all and you just pick the register you want and hope for the best. I personally miss the old system and from grumblings I've overheard in line, I think many are in agreement. For awhile after the switchover, self-checkout was not available and there were no designated express registers. This has since been rectified, though I don't think the self-checkouts are set up to take cash. Seems odd. If you happened to visit Big Y this morning, 1/7, I will say that the mob scene you witnessed is not typical. Clearly we all were out shopping before the snow storm and they could not handle the crowds. I waited in line 45 minutes to check out. Unacceptable, yes, but honestly, I thought it would be worse given that I joined the line back at the milk case. Management , I'm sure you got a fair share of tongue-lashings from irate customers today and don't want this debacle to happen again, so I urge you to put some contingency plan in place for overcrowded/understaffed situations. Easier said than done, I know, but truly, it was getting tense in the line. Frustrations over waiting aside, I think people just really wanted to see a management presence directing checkout traffic. Give at least the illusion of having control of the situation! Lastly, an improvement over Hannaford to end on a good note. The bakery. Hannaford bakery was great, but the new recipes and decorations being used are even better. The doughnuts are amazing, too! I'm hoping to see a pizza counter in the future like at the stores I grew up with. Overall, I'm liking this store and will continue to shop here so long as it remains affordable. read more

I have been shopping at big Y because of its close proximity to my house. The staff there never seem to be happy working there. but after what happened to me this past Thursday (12/19), I will never step my foot to Big Y (west Peabody branch). on 12/19, I went there to get gift cards. I went to the customer service counter. the lady told me that she could not sell it to me if I didn't have a big Y account with them, even though I was paying cash. I was little puzzled as I could buy all other items at Big Y without having a big Y card. I didn't want to open an account with them. so I walked away with the cards, to look at other items. The lady followed me for like a min, grabbed the gift cards out of my hand, said, I need to put them back to the shelf now as if I was going to steal these (zero dollar value) gift cards. she just grabbed the cards out of my hand and walked away. the whole time, I felt like I was being treated like a thief. Please hire someone who actually like to deal with customers for your customer service counter. and please rethink your policy - big y Peabody is the only store will not honor CASH purchase of gift cards without being their member. I went to get all my gifts cards at CVS next door. they were nothing but friendly, accommodating, showing appreciation for my business. Big Y, you are facing a fierce competition. There are whole foods, market basket, stop and shop, shaw markets all within 5 mile radius. if you want to stay in business for the long term, treat your customers better. for now, you just lost another customer. read more

People love to complain... but they just don't like change. Big y has some higher prices, but the best sales around! Love the regulars, employees and customers both! I shop everywhere and it balances out price wise. I've read a negative rating that I actually witnessed and this was absolutely misrepresenting what actually happened... but that's why we have choices. My complaints largely are regarding value. I need to preface by saying that I do not have one of Big Y's Value cards. I looked at the application form online, & decided that I did not want to provide Big Y with my phone #, email address, & drivers license # just to get good prices in their store. I'm guessing that they ask for that info for check cashing priveleges. Since I would never cash a check there, they do not need to have this information from me. That being said, here are my complaints: -While sale prices were good, the prices on the same items (without card) were quite high. -Per circular, many sale items required that a certain amount be purchased, or full price will be charged (a gimmick some other stores also use). -I was overcharged on one item, based on the shelf marked regular price. I did not have time for the price check procedure to verify shelf price. I have never caught Market Basket in this error. To sum it up, Big Y uses gimmics,& charges high prices without their card. They did not win me over. Market Basket requires no card, offers great sale, & regular prices. I see no reason to switch. read more

This evening in Peabody, at around 5:20 pm to 5:25 pm, there is a very impolite cashier, possibly front end manager, who is in her mid 50s to late 50s and she is short with a long gray hair pony tail. She was at the self-check area where she was to put money at the 2nd self-check cash register. All of the sudden, she said an obscene word that was very offensive, very unprofessional, and very impolite in front of customers, like myself. She should be terminated. read more

I only go in this store now if I absolutely have to or if I forget something or need a quick item. The produce never seems fresh to me, and I don't think I would trust the freshness of perishable items. The store is nearly deserted even on the weekends. The last time I went in I was told that if I didn't have a reusable bag, they are now charging 10 cents for a paper bag! I asked why, and at first the clerk said "because Peabody is banning all plastic". I asked her since when and she then said that they didn't do it yet but Big Y is doing it now in "preparation"...what?? I use reusable bags at most places and when you do use them, they GIVE you a credit of 5 cents, Big Y just charges you if your don't use them. read more

Unbelievable. Driving to vermont. Stopped at Greenfield store to pick up some groceries. It was next to gas and interstate. Needed their card to get advertised prices. No courtesy card at register...went to customer service desk to get a new one. Had to turn over drivers license! Ok....then they insisted on my phone number. Didnt want texts from a store 6 states away. Finally, they kept asking if I was the same person who has my very common name in a bunch of different massachusetts towns. I kept telling them I don't live here...my drivers license told them state and home address. They persisted in asking me again about like named people in mass. I finally just took my drivers license and abandoned my groceries. Clearly they didn't want to do business with someone like me. read more

Every time have gone in for a good sale, the shelves are empty - no rain checks, no substitutions. Not worth traveling to go to the store any more unless they change their stocking and sales policies. Lines can often be slow - much slower than when it was Hannafords. Also, the whole coin exchange deals is another confusing element of the customer loyalty program. Should simplify - for customers and for employees (the poor check out clerks). read more

I went to Big Y on Thursday, April 24, 2020. Since the Pandemic, they are only letting a certain number of people in the store at a time. They also changed the aisles with arrows for one way only and you must wait to be called to go to a certain register. All of this is fine. My horror was going to the produce section. At first I observed 3 workers stocking. Only one had his face mask on properly and was away from the other two. When I observed the other two middle aged male workers, they both had their face masks below their noses and only covering their mouths. They were standing next to each other talking. One was taking strawberries out of a carboard box when he pulls out a piece of fruit in one hand, takes his mask off with the other and puts the mask in the cardboard box where there were still 3 plastic containers of strawberries left to be dispensed. I'm watching him talking and eating fruit with a dirty face mask in a cardboard box of strawberries. I was so disgusted, I left and will not be back. The quick location from my home to the store is not worth it. No wonder people are getting sick! This man should not be working in the food industry. read more

Horrible! Rotten mandarins(whole bag), rotten watermelon, and bagged vegetables also rotten to the point I almost vomited when I opened the bag because the smell was so bad. These are all products I bought the same day (Tuesday afternoon). I don't even have a complaint about the prices, which I don't think are much higher than old hannaford. If you go at 7am, when the store opens, the produce shelves are either empty or have mostly rotten fruits and vegetables. I live about 2 minutes away. This is in the old Hannaford's location. The store is full of gimmicks. You need a loyalty card. 10% off on Tuesdays for seniors. I went for a sale on salmon and for 3 weeks the item was sold out and I got a rain check. What's the point of offering things for sale if they are not in stock.? Each time I checked out , the cashier made a pricing error which had to be corrected by a supervisor. One item was rung up at almost 50% more than it should have been. Overpriced, poor produce. Even though this is closer, I will continue to go to MarketBasket in Middleton as they have great food, great prices and great service with no gimmicks. read more
