I had a hard time finding this location, but once I did...it was a pleasure!! Such a neato place in a tucked away strip in Chesapeake! Not too sure of how many will venture here outside of the locals in Chesapeake, but if they do I hope they have a DD. If you travel here from cities such as Virginia Beach and Suffolk...have uber on speed dial! You may want to stay longer than expected. So much to choose from but... They do not serve food here...such a bummer - hence the 4 stars!! -.5 star for distance and -.5 star for no food. However, the night I visited, Bella Pizza was the Food Truck on site. And they are - AMAZEBALLS!!! I learned the term "first flight" - I had no clue of it's significance. To my surprise it was the flight of beer samples. Let the drinking began... I am far from a beer drinker, but I sampled the flight without hesitation. I know now I like the lighter beer (Blonde)! The owner Bim came over to check on us...friendly guy. Of course I gave him my review on the beers. As he saw I wasn't too fond of the tastes he recommended one for me. So he brought back a sample of Bim's Magic Berlinerbus...oooohlala!! Now the Magic must of been powerful, because I wanted another glass of that one!! Now IMO this wasn't beer, but more like a fruity drink. So I kinda cheated. But if he said it was beer, then I'm a beer drinker - NOW :) Such a great night in an awesome venue!! The staff, family-oriented and eager to talk about their business...this makes for a fun time!! The decor is different and definitely makes you feel like you're in a backyard somewhere. I see this place being a great hang out. It's small...so it may fill quickly on a weekend night! This was my first time at a brewery, therefore I didn't know what to expect. But next time someone invites you to a brewery - just go!! You are sure to find something here that interests you! The staff is friendly enough, so just ask them for recommendations and enjoy the night! Have fun :) read more

The hubs and I attended the grand opening and had a great time! It was slam packed, but somehow I landed the cool kid chair.. the antique barber chair! We sampled several of the bars with a couple of flights. The had the Split Window Saison, Sunbeam Blonde, Rockers IPA and Ape Hanger Stout. The hubs is partial to IPAs and I'm a stout lover, but all 4 beers were solid. Loved the Ape Hanger Stout! Didn't get a chance to try the ghost pepper beer they had on tap as well, but everyone around us who had tried it raved about it. Looking forward to going back again for other brews as well as the food trucks! Can't beat great local beer AND local eats... great way to spend a Friday night! read more

Big shout out to chesapeake brewery! All new and much more room throughout. Parking can be a bear because they have more seating than spaces. Several different types of beer brewed on premise. This place is kid and dog friendly inside and out. Cool car vibe with a fire pit made out of a front end. Superb outdoor seating. My new go to place. This was the fifth and last brewery that I visited while I was in the Va Beach area for family business. I am from Texas and have been brewing for over ten years. I arrived later in the evening and business was hopping. Layout very unique. Kind of a rustic feeling. Big and spacious. Staff was busy and friendly. However, I sat at the bar for a bit before I realized I had to order at the end of the bar and risk giving up my seat. The beer was decent. I had the Rocker. The brewery is kind of far from civilization and one must be willing to travel to get to it. Travel any further, one wold be in North Carolina. But it is worth a small road trip. Cheers, Mike Hutto, Tx read more

We had a great first experience at big ugly! It happened to be a day they had several fire trucks there for kids to get in. The beer was good & we enjoyed the food trucks that were there that day. Big Ugly Brewing - Me...Old school phone booth and beer. Awesomeness. - Breweries Near Me - Chesapeake, Virginia

Excellent food atmosphere and beverages. I stopped in the other evening to burn some time. Even though the bar was full, the staff was friendly and attentive. Even though there was excellent live music, you could have a conversation. Definitely a repeat performance and destination read more

If you enjoy swimming in a compacted fishbowl this is your brewery. Great aesthetics and a fun name. Just most I've seen it's very crowded, which to many means great service and fun. To some it means limited service, long lines, disrupted conversations, and bit hard to get around, or really hear anyone. There are a few great crafted beers but it's Virginia there are plenty of crafted beers around and if you don't enjoy swimming in a crowd, may want to try out another pond. Or better yet, you can always test the waters and give them a call. If they scream into the phone. You'll know what kind of tank is instore for you. read more

Moved to the area earlier this year and this quickly became one of my favorite spots! Great beers always on tap, I love that they always have a few sours to choose from. If I could give more stars I would. This place is amazing. I love the Saison and the Stout, the owner also gave me a sample of the stout with jack daniels which wasn't on the menu at the time. The vibe is very low key and comfortable without being pretentious. The types of people there were very diverse. Of course you have the hipster types, but there are also middle aged and seniors there which makes for a good balance. Ive only been to 2 other breweries in Hampton roads so I didn't have a lot to compare it to, but regardless this place tops my list as the best one yet. I think this will be a once a weekend location for me for sure. Last Quick Side note: They do last call at 10 pm, they've got families to get home too. read more

The best spot to spend a Saturday! The huge patio, frequent live music, and great beer makes for a good weekend and evening hangout. The decor is so cool, and the employees are always friendly. Coming from working at another brewery, I gotta say the Staff on a Busy Wednesday handled the crowds with Great service. Took a quick moment to explain the options of the sours to my daughter with the different flavors you can add to it. Like the option of gluten free on their selections. Nice brewery to hangout with friends and family!! read more

I never knew Chesapeake had a brewery. This place is a very cool hangout. I came across this brewery when I was given an invite by a friend who was playing one night with his jazz band. Tons of my coworkers were there that night. The atmosphere was casual and energetic. There was plenty of space here but not much seating if it is packed. There is outside seating and an outdoor heater also. I tried sampled a few beers as they offer small samples before buying. I usually don't drink beers but this brewery has several I actually enjoyed. They don't sell food but there was a food truck outdoors the night I visited. But this line was too long to wait in the cold. Several people did order pizza via deliver which was funny. I could see myself visiting here again if there was an event I cared to go to. If you are a beer drinker, this is a nice local spot to hang out. read more

I LOVED the beer here. We went on a day they had a food truck, I think it was Hangrys? And it was 10/10. I absolutely LOVE Big Ugly Brewing! My first experience here was at a Yelp event and I knew I had to continue coming back during my four months in Virginia Beach. The location is a little off the beaten path. The strip mall it's in is pretty unimpressive/hidden and it's very easy to drive right past it. But even though the outside is fairly run of the mill, the decor inside is really cool. There's a van you can sit in to enjoy some beer, as well as a table with a Triumph motorcycle as a seat! I've had a couple different beer flights here and all of the beer I've tried has either been phenomenal or incredibly unique. They have a ghost pepper beer as well as a beer brewed with coffee. However, the saison is definitely my favorite! They don't have food, but you can order food from a couple of nearby restaurants and enjoy it at the bar. Although my time in Virginia Beach is over, I'm confident I'll hear more about Big Ugly in the future. Their beer is high quality and they really care about what they're doing. read more

Big Ugly is a very fitting name of this establishment. The staff (with the exception of the bar staff) was very rude. Simple questions regarding the type of drinks served or the food trucks that typically show up at the business were the responded to with a rude and condescending tone. We arrived when they first opened and it was not busy. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but I do not understand why they talked to their customers in such a manner. The only reason that I'm giving them 2 stars (instead of 1) is because the bar staff was very friendly. It's a shame that a few rotten apples ruined the entire experience for me and my friends. We weren't rowdy or gave any other reason that would warrant such service. Just 3 married couples catching up and trying to enjoy food and drinks. read more

Great Beers and great atmosphere! Looking forward to the new site for more room and more great events.

It's a brewery. It's got a selection of beer. The price is high. The beer is average at best. Nice outdoor seating. Almost always crowded but not for the quality of beer but rather there is no other brewery in the great bridge area. I see nothing wrong with this home town brewery but nothing really stands out. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our way to a beer festival in the Outer Banks. Love the old car/truck & barrel décor. Very different. We were some of the 1st people here when we came and the staff was very friendly. We shared a flight and some of my faves included the Rockers IPA, the Steady As She Gose w/ ghost peppers, the Magic Berlinerbus, & their Ragtop Wit. This was one of the more 'off the beaten' path breweries that we visited that weekend but we really enjoyed it. Check them out if you're in the area. read more

Went to a Christmas party where we had to exchange a 6 pack of beer. So went to this brewery that's down the street from the house that I've been hearing about. To my surprise they didn't sell 6 packs of their beer but sold growlers.(brought a growler) Lady behind the bar was knowledgeable with their beers and helped me pick out a beer that everyone LOVED at the party. While I was waiting in their order line I noticed on the sign they had different food trucks in the parking daily and a live bands on Saturdays(went on a Saturday around 4pm decent crowd with plenty of seats). Fire pits outside, people with their doggies. It was an cool environment and I can't wait to go back. read more

Big Ugly is one of my favorite breweries in the area. I'm no beer connoisseur nor like beer too much, but Big Ugly has a couple of great sours on hand and the raspberry syrup added to them are amazing! I definitely love the Bimmer and the Key Lime Gose. The bartenders are all super nice and easily help you find exactly what you're looking for. There are a bunch of tables to sit at as well as an outdoor area. As for food, there's usually a local food truck there and they have a limited amount of snacks at the brewery itself. I've found myself frequenting this brewery and I always look forward to my next visit! read more

Love this place! Amazing selection of beers and local food trucks. They have friendly and knowledgeable staff. Most days they have music, trivia, bingo, or a cool pop up shop. Disclaimer: I'm not a beer drinker but this brewery is pretty cool about opening their doors to other small business and its pretty rad if you ask me. I've had the pleasure of driving out to Big ugly a few times to try red smoke back before they had a storefront and recently came back to grab some donuts of classic donuts. although its a bit out of the way for me its not hard to find, the parking lot is reasonably sized and they often have cute pop up opportunities for other business...its nice seeing the community coming together without everything being competitive. read more

I had the opportunity to try this Chesapeake Brewery thanks to tHRive and the Chesapeake Alliance's Happy Hour event. I normally don't go to breweries or happy hour after work because I am not a social person (at least that's what I keep telling myself) so I was glad to try this out. I'm not much of a beer person either, and I didn't think I would be able to enjoy any of the drinks... BUT! One of the bartenders helped me out so much. I told her that I am not a beer drinker whatsoever, told her that I've only really liked Redd's Apple Ale and this German beer that tastes like "Christmas" since I don't remember the name. Somehow she was able to take my nonsense and turn it into a very good selection for me. I had the Bim's Magic Berlinerbus with a hint of raspberry added to it, and it was absolutely amazing. If you're not a beer drinker like me, and you like something with just a hint of tartness, that's what you need to ask for. I know what I'm ordering the next time around, and hopefully I'll get to stay long enough to finish it! It may take me an hour or so, but hey. Amateur beer drinker here! I'd go back when I'm not on a time limit to be somewhere else. There's also this old school van where some kids where playing and they allowed DOGS! Dogs were a huge plus, not going to lie. Anywhere that's pet friendly automatically gets major bonus points. Only recommendation is to make sure you get there on time, or you'll run out of parking. Or be safe and just take an uber. No drinking and driving! Check it out! read more

"Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy" Benjamin Franklin Yelp actually introduced me to the Big Ugly a few years ago with one of thier memorable Elite events. Visited the BUB last weekend after a day of furniture shopping @ Esprit Decor. Shopping makes you thirsty right? No food servered here but feel free to bring your own or order from next door. Was disappointed to find that prior pizza place was no longer there. It was brick oven and out of this world. The new guys next door make a mean hot dog and the best giant tater tots ever. My favorite beer at the BUB is thier Bim's Magic Berlinerbus. (Named after thier vintage brewer Bim and his vintage 1979 VW bus that they showcase in thier brewery. This is a lightly sour fruity beer. It is low in alcohol and a great thirst quencher. I tried a sampler with optional seasonal fruit syrups made in house by Bim. Syrup flavors included: Pineapple, Raspberry, Blood Orange and Marshmallow (Forgot the real name). If you aren't a huge beer fan I highly recommend it. One guys said his wife never drinks beer but loves that one....Shoot I liked it so much I got a growler to go! Oh yeah a day my absolute favorite thing besides the beer is the VW bus that you can drink and hang out in! read more

First off, I rolled in here with multiple "non-beer" drinkers, and they all found something to enjoy. Way to convert the masses. The quality of the beer here is awesome. Some very smooth, some very strong, the dip into the fruity and even a house made root beer option. So this place caters to the DD, the beer snob, and the beer novice. Of course I love the kitsch of the decor, they went with the eclectic garage vibe and it was perfectly bizarre. Staff was friendly, space was clean, and the beer options were plenty. A must visit on the Hampton Roads craft beer tour, and a welcome addition to Chesapeake. Cheers to the city's first brewery! read more

The beer was JUST okay...until the root-beer blew my socks off! I being an avid craft-beer drinker I had decided it was time to check out this new brewery and see what types of beers they radon tap. After a short 30 minute drive from the Oceanfront I had arrived on a Friday night and the place was PACKED so much it reminded me of being in a nightclub when I was 20. There was several similaries to Pleasure House Brewing but so much more interior decor. They even had a VW bus inside with table seating and a small TV to watch and enjoy a drink, how cool is that? Making my way through all the people and I managed to snag a stool at the far corner of the bar. I ordered their beer flight as nothing really stood out on the menu as being good. I'm usually more into the darker high ABV. beers and surprisingly I did really enjoy their "Berliner Weisse." Hopefully they're able to keep it around throughout the summer as it had a very refreshing taste and they also infuse fruit with the beer as well. Upon finishing my flight it was then and I had already made up my mind that it was JUST a typical 3 star review or so I had thought, that is until I had the root-beer! I just knew the stuff would be something special when I could smell the Sassafras a foot away! Upon the first sip I thought to myself "DAMN, THIS IS THE BEST ROOT-BEER I'VE EVER TASTED!" It was then that in talking with the bartender I had learned that the Brewmaster/Owner was retired Navy and had several children who occasionally enjoyed pouring the root-beer. Perhaps, I could be wrong but I can see a correlation with possibly encouraging and inspiring the younger generation in the very early stages of Craft-beer making utilizing Craft Root-beer. I did happen to read another Yelper's review stating there was kids in the bar they the night they went, possibly there for the root-beer. However I didn't see any on the night that I went, but agree in that it's not really a place for kids to hang with their parents at the later nighttime hours. **Overall, I really enjoyed myself at Big Ugly minus the crowd. I'm sure as time progresses the crowds will thin out a bit making for a much more relaxed and enjoyable experience. Hopefully they can find a good anchor beer that they are remembered by like Young Veterans - Jet Noise. This has been something that is yet to happen with the other local area breweries, all within good timing I suppose. But for now I just cant wait to have that FREAKING AWESOME root-beer again.LoL Cheers!!! read more
