Very cute spot located in Carroll Gardens with nice decor. The food isn't the most traditional take on French food, but it is good. Such a beautiful and charming place. We walked in early on a Saturday morning and were seated immediately without any wait. The ambience was perfect (we sat in a sunny corner with a bay window) and there was so much bright light and great details at the restaurant. The prices were reasonable, and the dishes were very filling without being too heavy. I really enjoyed my savory crepe and my partner got their brunch special, which was a chorizo benedict. I hate when an egg dish costs over $20 (which seems to be pretty standard nowadays). Once seated, menu were brought out to us right away. We were just looking for a drink, so I got the Orange Moscato ($16) for a glass while he got the Lager ($8). I had lived close by here for years and always saw it buzzing, but never had a chance to drop by. It wasn't until I met a French expat at a wedding who said this was her favorite bistro to eat/hangout that I finally made it a point to check it out. Super cute neighborhood spot. Great wine list, and super friendly waitstaff who are helpful in giving recommendations and attentive the whole night. I went by and wanted to get a couple of appetizers and wine because they had a $40 deal for wine bottles on Wednesday. I get to the bar and attempt to order and noticed he is not listening or l acknowledging me so I ask my boyfriend to put in the order for us. I went back to this French bistro with a group for dinner having already been here for brunch once. They have since expanded (along with the joke "bigger" tiny as said by other Yelpers) going from a small hole in the wall which consisted of a bar counter and a few seats to a pretty sizable restaurant. Their menu has expanded slightly but they kept what was there before. I got a cider to drink which was Aval as expected as I wasn't in the mood for wine even though this is a wine bar. Other people got wine and the pours as per before are generous. The service was very friendly making sure for one of the diners that their food was gluten free. My appetizer was the Filet Mignon Carpaccio with Meyer lemon, olive oil, shallots, Beaufort ribbon, pickled onions, capers, Comté cheese, and topped with arugula and it was $14. The dish was well plated and had a good portion. I tried the Pesto Burrata which was $19 and it was also delicious. Another person had the French Onion Soup ($13) which they liked a lot. The only appetizer at fault was the Seared Crab Cakes which was $18. There happened to only be one crab cake and it was pretty small so it was not worth it at all as well as the name not being accurate. I'm not sure if it was an issue or if it's misspelled now but I wouldn't recommend it. For my main dish, I went with the Boeuf Bourguignon with mixed mushrooms, baby carrots, and a butternut squash purée for $24. This was outstanding with very tender beef. There was also a piece of a large sauteed onion (I believe pearl or white) which was sweet while the mushrooms were nice and earthy. The butternut squash purée was a unique twist which I prefer over the normal boiled potatoes (though I probably would have preferred it with pasta as it is occasionally served.) Another person had the Big Tiny Cassoulet which I tried a little bit of which was delicious. The Jolie burger looked outstanding and I am probably going get that next time. Someone had the La Bouillabaisse which they liked and the last two people enjoyed their mains as well; the daily fish special (which I think was skate but I'm not sure) and the vegetarian lasagna. For dessert which isn't online unlike everything else, I got the tarte tatin. I believe it was around maybe $10-$12. This was served very differently from other spots consisting of a small layer of pastry topped with a generous amount of mashed caramelized apples and some vanilla ice cream. There was also a caramel like sauce on the side which also had a strong apple flavor. While not traditional, it was still very tasty. Another person had the lemon tart which they enjoyed (tried a bit and it was nice,) someone had the crème brûlée, and someone had the chocolate dessert which was tiny but rich. Outside of a couple portion sizes being perhaps a bit small for the price (nothing on my end but definitely a few of the other dishes such as the crab cake and chocolate dessert,) the food here is well worth it. Very well developed French flavors with very nice service and a cozy atmosphere. Will go back and enjoy again (likely the outstanding looking burger next time.) read more

Big Tiny has become one of my neighborhood staples. We've tried many things on the menu and I don't think we've ever had something we didn't like. My personal favorite are the mussels provençal, which come with fries and bread. You'll want to drink the broth once you finish the musssels and use the bread to help soak up the last drops. Wines by the glass rotate daily and are written on the blackboards on the wall. I've had some amazing whites, if only I could remember what they were! My favorite time to go is like a Tue or Wed night when it's not too crowded and you can have a leisurely dinner. It can get pretty busy Thu-Sat nights and you might be touching elbows with your neighbor given how close together the tables are, which is a vibe in and of itself. It seems like their wines are on rotation, and they only have 4-5 red and white each to choose from which are written on the wall. No cocktails, just wine and beer. As for food, we got a couple small dishes to share and a main. Definitely enough for the two of us - French onion soup: one of my faves of the night! a little salty, but that's how it always is. The bread gets nice and soggy as you eat your soup, and the combo is melty cheesy salty goodness - Mushroom tartine: wasn't a huge fan of this, but good to try. It is basically a toasted bread with a combination of 3 different types of mushrooms chopped into very fine pieces on top. I was expecting a little bit more mushroom flavor, but was a bit lacking - Escargot: served with toasted bread, delicious to dip in the BUTTTER. A classic! - Meatballs: my other favorite of the night!! 3 large meatballs in this divine thick gravy with shitake mushrooms. This was so delicious. The meatballs were not dry at all, and made with good quality meat! They had a little char on the outside and the sauce added such rich flavors. I would definitely order again and recommend this. Tried this place for the hub's bday last night as we wanted something low-key, it's within walking distance of our place and we'd heard it was good. Ambiance is nice; our waitress is lovely, provided excellent customer service; it's not noisy, but we're at 6:30pm on a Weds, so it's not full. By the time we left, around 8, it had filled up quite a bit and was on the noisy side, but it's a lively French bistro, so to be expected. They divided the space in a cool way with an unusual bar...a nice element, to be sure. In terms of speed of service (delivery of the food, that is), this place is quite slow. We ordered our appetizers first as we were hungry and needed more time to decide on entrees and drinks. Despite that fact that there were only 3 parties in the dining area at the time (and maybe a couple people seated at the bar), it took a while -- much longer than expected -- for our apps to arrive. The wait between the apps and the entree was a bit shorter, but once you have something in your stomach, it's far easier to be patient. On to the food itself. The hub got his go-to french app, french onion soup, which he said was as good as any of his favorite ones. For dinner, he was tempted by steak frites, but went with something we'd be less likely to have at home, beef bourguignon. It was a chilly night, so a hearty dish suited the weather and he enjoyed it. The soup was definitely the highlight for him, though, and I know he'll want to go back for that alone. I got the mussels entree as my app. They come with one of two sauces; I chose the curry, as the server suggested it when I asked which she preferred. The mussels themselves were great, not shriveled tiny ones like you get at some places. The curry sauce was pretty good, but I have to admit, my mind kept drifting to my fave version which is at Littleneck. The bread that accompanied it for dipping was good, but seemed more like toasted bread than grilled and I prefer the latter preparation. Either way, when we go again, I'll Iikely repeat this app choice as it's solid. I was torn about my entree, but went with the fish of the day, as I wanted something on the lighter side. For some reason, my mind is blanking on what type of fish it was -- firm, mild, white -- branzino, I think. It's served with a few carrots and parsnip purée beneath it. The latter was yummy and the bites of fish with the purée were good. The fish alone was cooked nicely, but needed some sort of seasoning -- maybe even just a lemon -- as it was on the bland side. For drinks, I got a couple glasses of wine and the hub got a couple beers. We would have stopped at one each, but the slow timing lent itself to ordering another. The bottles of wine were pricey (for us, at least), starting at $55. Since they have a beautiful bar area, we had assumed they have cocktails, but they do not. So overall, a big thumbs-up for Big Tiny. I think we will try the steak frites entree next time as we saw plenty of french fries coming through the pass and they looked really good! Big Tiny? There is nothing tiny in taste to this place. It's only been open for 7 months, they make a huge impression in the quality and flavor off their food. The place is kindle of tiny. It seats 16 people comfortably without the bar seats. The place is rustic and romantic at the same time. They play eclectic and upbeat music and puts you in the mood to eat. The place was a video store before and they accomodate a kitchen and enough space for people to come and have a romantic evening with French food. The partners Dominic and Benjamin did a fine job with this place. They also have a Mex French place close by. I have not been there yet, but if this place is a model, I need to go to the other restaurant as well. Started with the chowder which was really delicious followed by the salad and tuna tartare. The tuna had a small kick too it...not too much, just enough to excite the mouth! Also tried the steak tartare which is excellent. It also had a small kick to it..but not too much! Now...the main thing to get is the Cassoulet. The Cassoulet is a wonderful dish. It consists of a slow cooked casserole orginating in the south of France containing meat, pork and white beans. Dominic is an expert In wines and most customers who come in ask him to choose what they will drink. I have a feeling anything you pick from the menu will be good. Had a great dinner at Big Tiny. Everything we had was delicious and reasonably priced for the quality of the food. The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars and not 5 is that our mains were incredibly slow to come out, even though our server kept stopping by to say it would be out shortly. When the food finally appeared, our waiter apologized and said that they were having electrical problems in the kitchen. I just don't understand why he couldn't have either let us know there was an issue when he delivered the appetizers or stopped by to explain what was going on. read more
