The "nobody likes going to the dentist" people in your life have obviously not gone to District…read moreDental! Navigating insurance and finding healthcare providers in a new city is beyond overwhelming so I took my time finding a dentist. I am so happy I found District Dental! Parking was easy. Check in was easy. Reminder system is great. I saw Dr. Thomas. She was amazing as was her hygienist and front desk staff. They printed out a full quote for everything that I need done that was easy to read and understand as well as gave me a referral to a trusted oral surgeon. I am excited to go back because I know that I'm in good hands!

Then the dental hygienist came in and informed me that based on his review of my X-rays I needed a deep clean to remove some buildup under my gums (which he specifically said is not a new problem) but he'd be willing to do a medium deep clean. The insurance specialist informed me it would cost over $300, out of pocket. To be clear, I go to the dentist every 6 months and have my entire life. I brush twice a day and floss daily. The dentist today had no concerns about my teeth after reviewing my X-rays. No dentist (or dental hygienist) has ever recommended a deep clean before. And I was told this is "not a new problem." I declined the medium deep cleaning, the hygienist refused to do a regular cleaning and I left. The whole experience felt very scammy. And I still need to get my teeth cleaned.

This office is interested in helping reluctant dental patients (*ahem, me*) feel comfortable and in control of their dental journey. Not an easy thing to do, but definitely can be done as evidenced by Dental Tree of the Heights investing the time to pulse check how the patient feels about dentistry in general. It turns out I needed quite a bit of work done on a variety of teeths in the molar quadrant of both sides of my lower mouth. Currently I am about halfway through this journey, but I can assure the dear reader that your humble narrator is feeling quite at ease with the treatment being provided to poor tooth 19. The staff are nice and knowledgeable, the office has a calming atmosphere, and that Netflix yo... When I was reclined back in my chair and handed the remote control, thus giving me the awesome responsibility of choosing a flick to take in while my mouth got drilled, I took the task seriously. The dear reader should know that while I have at times in my life avoided even looking toward a dentists office, I have probably also spent years of my life scrolling through movie selections and never actually picking anything to watch. And endless scroll of visual choices. After some time, I asked the dentist assistant to choose and next thing I knew, I was chillin while they was drilling. Netflix and drill, anyone? 5 stars.

They asked for my insurance card at check-in, but never bothered telling me they were no longer contracted with my payer. After my cleaning/exam I was told by the dentist that I needed two fillings. Then an MA came in my exam room and asked me when I was available to come in for a follow-up. It was only after I confirmed the appointment date she revealed that the cost of the 2 fillings would be $450. Afterwards she said the full payment was due before the appointment and proceeded to look at me as if I was suppose to hand over my credit card right then and there. She showed me the cost info on an iPad and framed it as if my insurance was in-network. I never got any documentation to take home - no treatment plan, no itemized breakdown of the procedure or cost responsibility, she just had me stare at an ipad for 3 minutes. Obviously I was not prepared to give anyone $450 as I just came in for a routine cleaning so I just left the office. As I was leaving I asked for documentation for the estimate, I was told by someone at the front desk they would email it to me (I never received anything). Later that day I contacted my insurance and that's when I learned they were no longer in network and the price I was given was for out of network services. I got a second opinion from another dentist who is in network with my plan. He examined me and said I didn't need fillings but was willing to do them if my issue worsened. He figured out that my issue was most likely caused by constant jaw clenching and grinding my teeth at night and he fitted me for a night guard. His office gave me an itemized statement and a written treatment plan with the fee, the insurer's allowed amount, and my exact share. He even provided me with a breakdown for the fillings in case I wanted to move forward getting them. The fillings would cost me $155 at my new dentist, versus the $450 at Sapphire smile. I don't really have complaints about the dentists or dental hygienists here, they were very pleasant and professional. But I do not like the lack of transparency when it came to my insurer's network status. And I was very frustrated that they didn't just clarify $450 was the out of network cost and that's why it was so inflated. The conversation around billing felt very dishonest and shady to me. If you're considering Sapphire Smiles, confirm their network status with your insurer first - you can't rely on them to tell you proactively, ask them for an estimate in writing that includes payment responsibilities for all parties with relevant procedure codes/descriptions, and don't hesitate to get a second opinion.

The surgery team there as well was very kind to me (I've had bad experiences at other places going under anesthesia before). They didn't rush me to leave the facility right after my procedure and took their time in taking care of me. I don't think many people enjoy going to the dentist. I really hate it. I had a very traumatic…read moreexperince as a child at the dentist, and have absolutely dreaded going since that time. When I came to Southern Dental, I admittingly was past due for a check-up and cleaning. But, I didn't want to deal with being lectured about it by anyone BUT the dentist. I was expecting to be lectured by the dentist. However, Dr. Morales was awesome. She was kind and gentle and professional. However, the receptionist has been a real PITA every time I've been in the office. After my first check-up, she came into the room to explain the charges I would be responsible for the work that I needed, and proceeded to ask me how long it had been since I had been to the dentist. Lady, you are not in the position to pass judgement on me and I don't appreciate a receptionist talking down to me. My second bad experience came with the same receptionist the second time I came in for a filling. On my first visit, I was asked if I wanted to do a pre-cancer screening for a cost of $33. They said they would bill it to my insurance first, but if insurance didn't cover it, I would then be responsible for the cost. Ok, fine. But, bill my insurance first. So, as soon as I come in for my second visit, the receptionist tells me I owe them $33 for the screening. I asked if they had billed my insurance and she quickly cut me off and told me that insurance never pays it, so she hadn't submitted it and I just needed to pay it. I was pretty ticked at that point, but I held my tongue and paid the fee. Interestingly enough, I got the statement in the mail from my insurance a couple weeks later and the screening WAS covered by insurance - so now I have to request a refund from the dental office. I realize $33 isn't a large sum of money, but it just annoyed me the way they handled it. Everyone else in the office has been polite and professional, so I don't really want to give this place a bad review because of one person. However, I learned recently that Dr. Morales is leaving the practice. Since she is really the reason I keep coming here, I will most likely be going somewhere else. A lot of other reviewers commented on the wait time. I never had to wait more than 10 minutes to be taken to the back/seen by the dentist. However, it hasn't exactly been busy when I have had an appointment. I was surprised by the facility itself. Very dated and while the reception/waiting area looks ok, the back with the patient rooms looks really run down.

I had previously contacted 6-8 different dental offices, and no one offered a real solution until I found Lush Dental.
