First time to try Big Rip's- found it on yelp and it was a good find! the prices are reasonable for bbq- The best side in my opinion were the beans- very flavorable. The cole slaw was pretty good but needed a little something in my opinion. The beans were the best. This place is definition of a hole in the wall. The brisket was good- sausage was fine- nothing special per say but good. The inside is tiny for ordering but they do have a pickle area which is nice with jalepenos, onions, two types of pickles and free beans. The staff was friendly. I don't recommend the corn bread muffins- the ones we got were severely burnt. I'm sure they would have been tasty if they were cooked properly but they fell apart in my hand because they were overcooked and dry. Seating is only outside but it's covered. I can't say this loud enough, this is the best BBQ around Tyler. I don't care how "famous" Stanley's is.. this place is SO much better all around. The meat is superb, but the sides are actually insainly good.. the potato salad is the BEST and the cowboy beans just have the right flavor and consistency. It's really perfect. On top of that it's family owned and the service is fantastic as we were leaving my boyfriend said "she was so sweet we need more people like that in the world".. The sauces are good too! On Saturday, we ordered brisket, pork rib, coleslaw, and loaded potato to go. However, when we returned to the hotel, we discovered that we had only received brisket, pork rib, and coleslaw. We called to request a refund for the missing loaded potato. The response was that we could either return in person today or tomorrow (Sunday). Later, we learned that the restaurant only operates from Wednesday to Saturday. Despite this, the server had assured us that we could return on Sunday, which is not their operating day. When I called the restaurant again to inquire about the refund, we were told that how we can get an refund on non working day. We got an answer that it was "your business." This experience was highly unprofessional and unreliable. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who is not from the area, as it seems that they are indifferent to the missing order and even more so to customers who do not return. The only good thing we had was the banna pudding. Big Rip himself was very friendly. We were hoping to like the food as we were from out of town and one of the hotel staff suggested it to us. The brisket on the potato I had and on the brisket sandwich my mo. Had was dry and finally chopped. BBQ sauce was tasty but did not help the dryness. The cornbread muffins where cold and tasted old. So creamy and loaded with all kinds of yummyness packed in. Be hungry before you order the loaded potato - it's huge!! I would give them 5 stars for their beef and sausages, but I give them 4 stars because the chicken I got today was like chicken jerky. Very tasty but could barely chew it. Our family was on a trip in East Texas and wanted some good barbecue. We arrived just before they were closing and while we were a little bummed that they sold out of brisket, we were able to get a rack of ribs. They were amazing, fall off the bones and seasoned just right so you really taste the smoke and tender meat flavors. You don't need any sauce for them but they have delicious regular or spicy sauces with the right amount of sweetness. We chose potato salad and cowboy beans for sides, added on fresh cornbread muffins. When we heard they had pecan pie and cobbler we added that on, too. All of it was incredible and filled us with leftovers to enjoy later. We are picky BBQ eaters and have had the best of the best here in Texas and this is top notch. The amazingly friendly staff let us sit on the patio to enjoy our food even though they had just about closed. We enjoyed conversation with who I can only guess was the pit Master Rip himself. Our plans were to get the food to go, but her hospitality was worth the sit down. My husband got the Ms Rip, it comes with a large brisket sandwich, chips, and a drink. It was a reasonable price for what you get. I got the loaded brisket nachos and homemade banana pudding. There wasn't anything spectacular about the nachos, I would have added jalapeños, sour cream, green onions, or something to give them an edge, but the banana pudding made me forget about the nachos. Well I was headed to Wades Place and apparently they are no longer open a solid time slot and I got there when they were closed. Saw a BBQ place across the street next to the RR tracks. This place should be on the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ places in Texas (We've been to 25). We were in heaven enjoying the tender, juicy brisket with a delicious charred crust on a sandwich as big as your face! The ribs are fall off the bone tender with lots of meat and a nice, tangy sauce. The atmosphere feels like real East Texas with outdoor seating in a pavilion with a pleasant breeze and friendly staff. One star is most definitely deserved. We travel all over the US trying out bbq joints, and sadly this place just did not deliver. If rude service to the paying customer is what you're into, then you'll love it. We called ahead to get a party pack as they call it, that states it was for 6-8 people. Online the price says $59.99, while on the phone the unpleasant lady stated it was $69.99 but we got it anyways. It included a pound of brisket, pound of links, a pound of ribs and two sides. The cowboy beans were pretty dang good, but the meats were so dry we fed it to the dogs. Wait.. there's more! As were standing at the window about to pay for the $88 dollar meal, I ask if we could get plain baked potatoes, the unpleasant woman stares at me as though I asked for a kidney, she then says "how many?" I said 4. She rolls her eyes, huffs and scruffs her feet like a child to the back to get the potatoes. SO uncalled for when dealing with a paying customer. It was so uncomfortable that the gentleman behind us said "if that's how they treat customers I'm not interested" and he walked off. We paid, got our food and still left a tip out of courtesy. Clearly something this place is lacking. Got home to find that the meat was so dry none of us could eat it, the links taste like someone bought them from Walmart and tossed them on a grill and the ribs were dry and charred. The potato salad was okay, and the beans were the best part. Also, all of the potatoes were burnt. Geez... lots of money and business wasted! Do yourself a favor and drive a few more miles across the bridge to "Hit the spot bbq" they're always pleasant and happy to see paying customers. read more
