The Avondale School District has been coming to this Orchard for many years now. This year, we were able to bring our Adult Transition Program to go on a hayride, pick pumpkins, have fun outdoors, and enjoy a cider and donut. Nice to stop in and see all the work and energy being put back into this place. Great crew working to make it a nice experience for all. Food has only been open for 3 weeks. Reasonable prices, everything tasted fresh and was served quickly. I got the chicken sandwich with a side salad and I liked it. Fresh salad lightly dressed is exactly my preference, add a little salt & pepper and I'm in my happy place especially with the chicken sandwich. Husband got the salmon burger and while it is in theory a good sandwich, the salmon was too fishy for my preference, sweet potato fries were delicious and just the right amount. Too much packaging and plastic for a dining in place, real silverware would be nice and if serving in disposable, make it easier for carry out then putting it in another disposable package. My husband and I enjoy going to Big Red, no matter the time of year! I really like their regular apple cider (both hot and cold). We have enjoyed the food their as well. The Legacy bar has a great selection of drinks and today was the first time I tried the food. Already trying to figure out when we are going back! Give the apple burger a chance. It's excellent! You can tell the burger is homemade and everything is super fresh. Sweet potato fries were cooked perfectly. The sauces (berry BBQ and ranch) are all homemade and really good. They have a kids menu as well of Mac and cheese, nuggets or burger. A couple near us ordered the nachos and they were able to share them. They looked really good as well. read more

One word, extortion. They are not the brightest folks here. We went here last weekend to get donuts and cider. This place has terrible business sense for sure. The staff actually rejected us and told us we had to get a minimum of a half dozen donuts, no less. They wouldn't take our money for anything less than a half dozen donuts. They really wouldn't let us get any less than half a dozen donuts. We only wanted one or two at most. A small cup of cider was three dollars, that's highway robbery. We decided not to get any since this was our sixth Cidermill that day. This is the most expensive and outrageously overpriced orchard we've been to today. It's not worth the money. Even the higher end Orchard Mills sell cider and donuts for less than this place. If this place had any business sense, they would have at least sold us two donuts for two bucks or even three dollars. Not the brightest folks working here. Not a great experience but it should have been. They have done a great job remodeling this place and the atmosphere is very nice. However, the service was not great. We sat at the bar and I watched the bartender pick up dirty dishes and without cleaning her hands then pick up an orange with her bare hand and put it on a beer glass. She did it multiple times. Then I watched the glassware get washed in their 3 compartment tubs. They were not washed or sanitized properly. We've been to Big Red but it was years ago. How sad to visit today. We went here to avoid Blakes crowds. Well, we accomplished that goal as no one was here and we soon figured out why. Today is Oct 2nd and we were told apple picking season was over but we could go to the pumpkin patch. We were very surprised to hear that but decided to go get a pumpkin. After paying $5 a person to ride the tractor to the patch we discovered the "pumpkin patch" was a bunch of pumpkins thrown onto a field filled with pricker weeds. A small pumpkin was $8! And when I say small, I mean like a pumpkin pie sized pumpkin. And yes, you had to buy these pumpkins. I bought a huge one at Costco for $6, here it would've been $30. They did have some black berry bushes but they were scary and my toddler almost got a branch in her eye when we tried to pick them. We noticed the apple trees were not groomed and looked not healthy. We rode the tractor back and got food for the animals which I became concerned for. Many of the animals looked sick and were hiding in their little huts. Only a few wanted food. We went to wash our hands where they had sinks and discovered only sanitizer. The website hasn't been updated as it said they had all kinds it things to do. No corn maze even though they said they did. The workers seemed confused and bored. It was such a strange experience and probably our last. So sad because this orchard used to be so great. read more

Genuinely don't understand the negative reviews. Came here on a beautiful weekend day in October and there were no lines, staff were all friendly and helpful. New owners, so rude, terrible experience. My mom bid on a Big Red package at a community charity event and won. It had no expiration and was for apple picking with a hayride, petting zoo, corn maze, cider and donuts. We showed up with our kids and the lady working the checkout was so rude and asked us several times where we had got the certificate. She said "we don't even have a corn maze and there are field trips so you can't have a hayride, you have to walk to the apples." We had three toddlers and an infant with us, so she said she'd see what they can do - great, thank you. No corn maze, no problem. But she seemed baffled by the certificate and continued to question it. Meanwhile the line was building with people trying to checkout, but she was the only one working. She finally said she needed to check with the owners as they are new. She came back in even a worse mood than she was already in and said "you're not getting a hayride and we're not going to give you the half-dozen donuts and half-gallon of cider. You can apple pick and do the petting zoo, that's it. We have new owners so you should have come in with the old owners." She said the hayride driver was done for the day and now pressing cider and we'd have to walk with small kids. Oh, and the apples up front we' picked over so if we wanted good apples, we'd have to go to the back corner of the orchard. By this time it had been at least 15 minutes of this holding up the line and everyone was rightfully angry. No cider and donuts, really? Does that cost you so much. This was a charity package for a local library. The new owners never changed the name of the orchard and we're still operating 100% as the same old Big Red - they should've honored the certificate. Their pettiness and horrible attitude were absolutely appalling. Before we left I went to buy a half-gallon if cider and while waiting in line with a bunch of other customers and many children, a man who appeared to be the owner was openly yelling at group of employees about how they needed to yell at a vendor. He was shouting and swearing - and real swearing, said the f-word and bull**** several times. And all of this in front of children and customers! The room got quiet and everyone was so uncomfortable. I can't believe this person runs a business this way. It's running into the ground, and honestly I hope people stop patronizing Big Red. They treat their customers and employees terribly. Not the same Big Red we grew up going to and we will NEVER go again. Please take your money and spend it at a deserving family orchard!! read more

They were already out of everything (we wanted donuts and cider, and the windows were closed to the kitchen) - save for sad, random produce and sparse jelly - by 4:30 p.m. on a Saturday and it was a ghost town in the parking lot and inside. This should have been the first clue that things were not going to go well. It was advertised that they were open until 6 p.m. Absolutely nobody was inside the cider mill except two employees sitting on stools that barely acknowledged us, and the couple ahead of us that was coming out as fast as we saw them go in. The "staff" grunted hello and went back to staring at their laps. They couldn't even be bothered to get off their phones. I'm very embarrassed for two grown women to behave like that on the job! We were there long enough after that to note that the cider and donuts were priced as very expensive, the bathrooms were gross - since the staff couldn't tear themselves away from their phones long to help us out, we decided to use the bathrooms and get back on the road - and we left empty-handed and irritated. Not worth the drive! Despite the BBQ/taco joint on the grounds (nice try, but Chip Gaines clearly does it better, guys), I don't see this place lasting much longer between the prices and the poorly trained staff they have working on site. That would be from this orchard! They placed an order for 1 case of every item I sold at the time - 19 products - they sold every one of them to the public, made their profit, and never paid me! $903.11 still due today. First it is really disappointing when you go to cider mill and the donuts are stale and it is a Sunday morning when they should be fresh. Second the prices are a bit outrageous. This was place made for a nice little outing for our family. We went late on a Saturday afternoon, too late to go out for pick your own apples. But we still found plenty to do. There is a petting zoo, but it costs $5 per person to walk in (yes parents, that's right ... even if you have no intention of actually petting an animal, you will have to pay for yourselves too and not just your child). There really aren't many animals you can pet in the zoo though -- a couple of bunnies, a couple of pigs, a llama, a handful of goats, and the rest are fowl of some sort -- chickens, ducks, turkeys. There was a hay "mountain" that was included in the price of the petting zoo which my son really loved. It's basically a pyramid made out of hay bales but kids were crawling all over it and having a great time. There are a number of kid-related activities to try out -- several bouncing apparatuses, the requisite bungee jump, and a couple of carnival rides. There were also some huge inflatable balls that your kid can crawl into and then you can roll them all around the lawn (this also cost $5 for 5 min.). And that right there is why I can't give this place a higher rating. I want to, I really want to, but they nickel and dime you to death here. Each ride/child attraction is exorbitantly priced. Every single activity/ride your child will wish to take part in is no less than $5, so if they did everything you could easily end up spending $50 per child on that alone. Another thing worth noting is cleanliness -- it's obvious they try, but when we were there they were completely out of hand soap and sanitizer around the petting/animal area and empty bottles of soap littered the entire area by the hand-washing station. Ditto used paper towels. Also, the sink area was a mess with what appeared to be chewed/left over food items smeared around. (On the other hand, the ladies restroom inside the snack area was spotless). The animal pens weren't dirty with feces, but they were pretty stark -- not much hay (packed dirt/mud in the stalls), and empty ice cream cone cups littered each animal stall (I can only imagine they were being used to hold the animal feed which could be purchased from dispensers in the "zoo"). I'm not sure how healthy that is for the animals ... On a more positive note, there is an excellent variety of food stuffs for sale -- fudge (delicious), donuts, cider, roasted ears of corn, sausages, pies, jellies, etc. There are some reasonably priced gourds and pumpkins (we visited recently, in the fall) as well as other produce you'd typically find at a farmer's market. The staff is also very helpful and friendly. The place was packed, and we did have a very nice time. Unfortunately, my son left disappointed because I refused to pay for him to take part in more than 3 or 4 of the activities (and this didn't include the cost of the food items we bought before we left). I realize they're in business to make money, but I really think they should consider charging an admission cover charge for families, or selling different levels of "packages" which could include/exclude certain exhibits and activities. read more

My mom and I go here every year to pick apples and I think we get more disappointed as the years go on. We were surprised when we bought a bag to go apple picking that they now charge $5/person for a hayride to the orchard!! The orchard is right out back and within walking distance....That is pretty ridiculous. To get your $5 worth, they now take you on a tractor ride in a different direction so I guess you feel like your $5 was well spent. Next year we will probably go to Blake's. They are making so much money already...really, $5? There was a family in front of us and it cost them $50 just to pick ONE bag of apples! Also, the kids they have working there are not knowledgeable on the different types of apples and their locations. They were asking me and my mom where we got certain apples! (And there are signs in front of the trees...) I ordered a cup of cider that was listed for $2.00 and they charged me $2.50! I guess they charge whatever they feel like there? For $1.75 I can get a larger cup of Cider at Blake's. If you are looking for an orchard with activities for your kids I would choose Blake's or Westview over Miller's Big Red. read more

New management in the last few years! This place has been saved!! There is nothing this amazing place doesn't have! From the petting zoo, to animal rides, hay rides, pumpkin patch and apple picking, my son loved the bouncy houses and we loved the market place! The hot dogs, cider and slushies, fudge and pie were amazing too! Best of all was the corn on a stick! The place was clean and all the people were friendly and helpful. This was the worst orchard I have ever been to. The only perk was they sold wine and had Cornhole to play. The lady behind the check out counter was down right hateful to us because she had to wait on a THREE YEAR OLD to show us where the orchard was because the tractor driver had left early because he wanted to. So we paid $20 a couple for 1 peck of apples that included a "hayride" that we didn't get. Who knew we would be trading in a hayride for a bad attitude. The guy who sold us the wine was super friendly though! Only 2 types of apples to pick today... The gala's were pretty good. Cider slushies were amazing but the plain cider isn't anything to right home about. I would just suggest you find a different orchard to go to. read more

The cider was good, but nothing special. My biggest problem were the doughnuts. They are without question the worst doughnuts I've ever had from a cider mill. Think store bought entenmann's doughnuts. They were room temperature and with zero crunch. I had a glass of cider and half a doughnut and threw the rest away. This place has gone downhill- apples and baked goods are still fine, but like the poster before me said, they charge $5 per person for an anemic petting zoo and they have a "how tall are you now" orchard-themed thing that parents can take pictures of their children next to that used to be outside the petting zoo area, but is now inside the petting zoo area so you have to pay the $5 PP. Understand it costs them $$ for animal feed, vet appointments, etc. but I think $1 PP would more than pay for that- and yeah, the carnival like stuff entertains kids but is just another way they price gauge the parents. My family (wife and two young - under three - kids) recenlty went to Millers Big Red Apple Orchard to buy a few pumpkins. We decided to come here instead of the grocery store because we wanted the kids to get the experience of visitng a pumpkin patch and seeing where the pumpkins come from. We went on a Monday afternoon (not very busy) and were suprised that they wanted us to pay $5 per person to gain access to the pumpkin patch. Maybe I am naive about pumpkin picking, but I thought paying $20 before buying the pumpkins was rediculous. We would have received some of that money back had we purchased four pumpkins, but we were so turned off by the experience that we went to a nearby orchard and picked our pumpkins for free (just had to pay for the pumpkins themselves). Millers Big Red Apple Orchard looked like a beautiful place, but I think some of their prices are out of line with other orchards. read more

Don't go if you actually want to pick your own apples... we walked out when we saw that they charged a flat $5 per person just to get in. I guess if you are just going to entertain your kids for awhile it is a good deal. Otherwise, skip it and go down the road to Stony Creek Orchard. They do not charge per person there. Wow was this place a bummer... And a rip off. I always go to this cider mill with my kids and end up leaving and going somewhere else, forgetting how lousy it is. First, we got ripped off. Two adults, three kids that are older and one baby and the lady charged us $37 to ride out to the orchard and get a little bit of junky apples. THIRTY SEVEN DOLLARS for probably twenty small apples. The variety just plain sucked - golden delicious, Ida red and Granny Smith apples that were all small and not very impressive with not much to choose from. People were getting so tired of waiting for the wagon that they started walking to the orchard themselves. We got ripped off, the old lady working the line was just making up her own prices. The line took soooooo long that my kids were just becoming pretty disinterested with the whole thing, and everyone in line was complaining - but t was easy to see why it took so long when you got your turn and realized the old lady working was senile. After that, we went and waited for nearly two hours in line for $30 plain donuts and cider. We proceeded to take the kids to see the petting zoo and hay tower where they wanted an additional $10 per person - that means SIXTY DOLLARS for us to take our four kids for a half hour of entertainment. At that point, we said NO and left. Went down the street to Rochester cider mill where they had an even better hay pyramid with built in slides and petting zoo for FREE and our kids loved it. Skip this place and take your business to Rochester Cider Mill where you won't get price gauged and taken advantage of. My advice to Millers: if you're not confident enough in selling your product where you can't offer free activities for the kids, at least make a reasonable one price admission for everything with clearly posted signs to help people out. Your cider mill is extremely disorganized and there are not very clear posted signs on the cost of activities. I'm sure the old lady loves that because she can get away with charging whatever she feels like. Your donuts are good, the only reason for a star at all! read more

I was appalled when I learned they wanted $5/person just to step into the orchard. So for my family of 4, that was a $20 for...? It literally included nothing. You still had to buy the apples (which were the same price as I remember them being- before they charged an entrance fee).
