5 stars!!! One of the best neighborhood bars in Southwest Houston. The Bartender D ray is hospitality is one of the best. His personality is contagious. Great drinks and great atmosphere. Can't go wrong with this place read more

Big John's Ice House - A few for the 4th - Sports Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

Big John's came highly recommended by a friend. Unfortunately it's not my favorite place, nor one I would recommend to most people. Cleanliness is the main issue. Everything feels grungy/dirty. No one was wearing masks (late 2020) and generally it just didn't seem sanitary in a post-Covid world. There are nicer/cleaner places nearby. That said the drinks are fairly cheap and it's not over crowded. read more

Great food, down home atmosphere! They have bingo nights on Tuesdays at 6:30 and trivia on Wednesday nights. They after being in bands for live music! Check it out!! read more

Fun neighborhood icehouse, nice staff, good food. Crawfish when it's in season. Full bar, lots of TVs to watch sports games.

Ice cold beer at it's finest! Very nice staff that will keep them coming until you say so. Long time beer drinking institution on the Houston west side. read more

Big John's is walking distance from our home. My favorite time of the year is spring time because of the crawfish. Hubby and I sit on the pattio and dive into a bucket of bugs. He also enjoys the buffalo burgers. The clientele is typically significantly older than me (I'm talking 45+) but they are usually friendly. The staff is prompt and very pleasant. read more

This is a favorite watering hole. Charmingly divey with a complement of regulars. Karaoke on Friday nights. I've heard spectacularly bad Led Zeppelin covers there. It's probably more fun when the weather is nice. Lots of choices for beer lovers. Lots of pub food choices, I like their potato skins a lot. Took a chance on a Cobb salad and was impressed by homemade tasting blue cheese dressing and well prepared chicken on the salad. Not fancy but it is a cozy little corner to meet up for drinks and snacks. read more

Big John's Ice House - Cobb salad. Surprised by how good this was. - Sports Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

You get about what you would expect from this place. They aren't trying to be anything that they are not and that's ok. You can tell that it is most regulars that hang out here. We got quite a few stares when we walked in. I felt pretty out of place and it only got worse when we went to the bar to order drinks. We asked the bar tender for a beer list. They didn't have one. No beers on draft but they did have quite a few craft beers in cans... although we got made fun of for asking for them. And then we mocked again as the "craft beer couple" when we tried to close our tab. I can take a little teasing though so I was fine with it. However, my husband's beer was clearly skunked. The can wasn't firm when we got it and it tasted very off. We didn't want to have to go to the bar and draw anymore attention to ourselves by asking for another so we just drank it and left. All in all, I can't really hate on this place. Like I said, it was pretty much what I was expecting. Not sure that we will be going back anytime soon, which is a shame because it is right around the corner from us. We were really hoping for a good neighborhood spot. read more

Great, dive-y little spot, hidden in the Energy Corridor - perfect for grabbing a beer and some bar grub. I prefer coming on Monday's when you can get a burger and fries for $5 and wash it down with $2.50 domestic bottles! Their fried pickles also can't be beat. They've got plenty of seating, both indoors and outdoors (covered), so they can accommodate large groups for those post-work happy hours. read more

Big John's Ice House - Fried pickles - done the right way, chip style, none of the spear nonsense! - Sports Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

I was once a "regular" here. And what is really cool is I can walk in today, after several years have passed, and still feel like a "regular". Come in after work and you will see people from all walks of life - straight from the office and straight off the job site. But here we all seek one thing - cold beer, unpretentious surroundings, and genuine people. If you don't stop by Big John's when in west Houston, you are definitely missing out. read more

Big John's is the quintessential after-work watering hole. It's bare-bones and fit-for-purpose. Wood benches and concrete floors ensure that clean-up is a breeze. It has big screens to watch whatever. The beer flows plentifully and cheaply. Because it's near the Energy Corridor, much of the clientele are oil folks, but the Harley contingent are equally at home here (of course, these days, they are often one and the same). If you're wanting to meet and discuss something on the West Side, more often than not, someone will say, "How 'bout we go to Big John's?" read more

My first time here was on a Thursday and it was trivia night.. I had great experience as the whole bar was interacting with each other and having a great time.. Great awards are given for the 1st place and 2nd place winners. I notice my waitress was serving a lot of people but she was still swift with my drinks and very polite. A lot of TVs here showing sport games. They also have ping pong table in the back which was fun for me. I am definitely coming back here . read more

Apparently my girlfriend's family has a long history with Big John's. They've been going there for years and invited me to try it out. The food was good and came in generous portions. In fact, the salad was freakishly large. The place had a real mellow sports-bar feel about it. Worth a try. read more

I've got to start off by saying this place is obviously targeting a different kind of customer than myself but I still felt compelled to write this in case there are other people out they like me. Walking in, it was about what I expected from seeing it from the street. I was a bit surprised at the pornography on the walls of the men's room but it is an ice house. My wife and I came here looking for a good burger and a couple beers. Their beer list is pretty extensive but only if you like bud light or the 20 or so synonyms. Again, I realize many do, but I was disappointed that a couldn't find a single IPA or anything close to type of beer that I like. That brought it down to 4 stars for me. Moving on to the food. They did have a decent selection of burgers on their menu. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, wife ordered some guacamole burger. We were both really disappointed. There wasn't much flavor to either one and each ran us just south of $10. They came with about 1/3 of the French fries that I was expecting so at this point I started to get a bit grumpy. That brought me down to 3 stars. After that, our server forgot about us and I had to go find her to request our bill. $30 for 2 burgers and 2 bottom shelf beers. We definitely won't be back... read more

Just okay. The atmosphere is nice, the patio and game area are welcomed, the food is mediocre at best. I would get an order of fries and skip the rest for a real burger restaurant. The bar is nothing special, spend your money elsewhere. Do not come here expecting a "Cheers" vibe. read more

I love this place, it's very close to our house. It's a perfect place to just drop by anytime of day. Everyone is super friendly.

Relaxing place with very nice patrons. Food is good and prices are very reasonable. Tons of TVs so not a bad seat in the place when it's game time. read more

Rude and not welcoming at all. We waited 20 mins and no one came to take our order or tell us where to order. We ended up leaving but I have a feeling we are not missing out on anything special. They choose their customers and if you are not to their liking good luck getting served. I have lived in small Texas towns and I thought this place would bring back some nostalgia since it gave me that vibe when I drove by. Too bad it wasn't even close. read more

Tried this place twice to just drink. Older crowd with only a few nice patrons. Bar tenders were rude and acted annoyed a younger couple was there. Won't go back or recommend. read more

They have a really large open air area where it gets smokey in the colder months. Smokers tend to congregate right at the entrance to the open area. If you walk thru - hold your breath. Bartenders are great, the girls serving are personable and really hustle. Warning- food is great during the week. When the regular cook is working the food is really good- when he is gone- don't bother. read more

Earlier this year, a reviewer said the crawfish were not as good as they used to be. I have got to disagree. We go for the crawfish several times a year for the last few years and we just left after going through 10 Lbs of the biggest and most flavorful crawfish that I have had outside of the Atchafallaya swamplands of Louisiana! All food is good, the beer is cold and all served by friendly staff. read more

its kind of a hole in the wall, dont expect friendly bartenders, they have been there a long time. mostly regulars you know how it is but its a nice place, food is REALLY good would highly recommend their steaks. bands on friday is hit or miss. I love the fact that big John's is walking distance from my house. They have specials every single night, plenty of games to keep you entertained, and a jukebox so you can listen to whatever music you would like rather than a bars repeat track. read more

Really good Guac Burger. Beer was average price. Good place after work.

The live music Big John's brings in is fantastic (professional musician speaking here) and makes it well worth coming. So far I've only caught In the Key of Soul and Coco and the Sugarcanes, but they were both stellar and I was surprised to see such great performances with no cover charge. Check them out! (Oh and the gumbo is delicious too). read more

Nice bar. I enjoyed watching the game there one night. The chips and salsa was amazing! Spicy salsa and thin, crispy chips. There was card games going on. Only reason I give it 4 stars was the waitress was weird. read more

I have been here twice now and this is probably my favorite ice house. The chili is awesome, the bartenders are super friendly and the ladies room is super clean. Used to be a cool place to hang out but lately some of the regulars have been getting hostile towards to "business" crowd. Our company had a happy hour there almost once a month but we will never do it again. The people are very trashy now. Waitresses can be slow because I've seen them bring their kids in to work and they have to keep track of them. Heather the bartender is very nice but other than that the staff stinks. The food is not good as I have gotten food poisoning at least twice from this place. Bathrooms are usually dirty and smell. read more
