I ordered a steak sub "dry" which is just no added oil. I did not receive a dry sub. I received one doused with oil. Not only was the steak sub saturated but so much oil was used that every item in the bag was covered in oil from the steak sub. I was not difficult or demanding. I didnt have a lot of request or any adjustments except 1 sub with light oil. That sub had so much grease the wrap was plastered to it and the bread was dissolved. My stop here was fueled by nostalgia, and it hit the spot. I'd gone to the Okemos location many times when I was in undergrad at MSU. I looked forward to the visits and looked back on the memories fondly. Thus when I saw one on our drive home from Up North, I decided a visit was in order. This is by no means the greatest cheesesteak of my life. That title goes to a little place in Philadelphia, but as far as Michigan cheesesteak sandwiches go? This place will always get my vote. The steak is cooked fresh for you every time, and they're quick too. I opted for the 8" steak sandwich with banana peppers. Yum. If you choose to get the 16" - it is a MONSTER. That's a lot of sandwich so know what you're getting into. Otherwise, the bread doesn't quite blow me away but at this point it's a wrapped. This cheesesteak sandwich is Michigan good, and that's good enough for me when I'm looking for some convenient comfort food. No trip back home would be the same if I didn't stop by a Big Johns. It's mid MICHIGAN's most talked about sandwich. When I went to Philly for the 1st time and tried The legendary cheesesteaks, I said "big Johns could easily compete with these hoagies". So im sad to report this is no longer the case. I don't know what happened but it's awful, I mean extremely bad. I ordered the steak, onion, and mushroom sub. They didn't make the meat fresh, they grabbed it from a pile of already cooked meat, cooked it even more for a few seconds, and then threw it on the hoagie roll. It was so greasy, the bread and meat were just completely soaked. The whole thing just fell apart when I picked it up. It was inedible and went right in the trash. It's really hard to see places you love fall apart. Things like this happen a lot as you get older because change is the main narrative in life. But this is a shame, no one's sandwich should ever soak up that much grease. When I bite into a sandwich, that moisture should be from Mayo or oil, not grease from a ribeye. I recommend avoiding this location completely. read more

A great sandwich shop. My sister used to live nearby, we still have friends up here and its not too far from the outlet mall so it is a great excuse to pick up a Big John's when we visit. They come in sizes up to sixteen inches but unless you are sharing you need to stick with a 6 or 8. My fave is the super steak and cheese with peppers and a bit of the famous red sauce. The sub rolls are fresh nice Italians and you watch them create your sandwich right in front of you which is great. The thin sliced ribeye is flavorful and perfectly cooked onions are melt in your mouth fabulous. The staff is always friendly too. The meat is always a huge pile and the prices are super reasonable. Definitely worth a whirl if you are headed up in that direction. read more

Called ahead and sub was hot and ready when we got there. Guy on the phone was polite and savvy. We got the super steak, mushroom, onion w cheese. The steak was delicious. I tried red sauce on the side and enjoyed it! A little spicy, not unlike a Bloody Mary, but good. Hubs liked his w banana peppers. There wasn't a ton of cheese, but steak was plentiful. I grew up in the Flint area and when you go back to visit you have to get Big John's. The sandwich is delicious. I have never had a better steak and onion sandwich. I wish there was a Big John's in Metro Detroit. I always order the 6 inch steak and cheese with yellow peppers. You can order other sandwiches but let's be real here.. if you go to Big John's then you need to get the steak and onion. People working are friendly and the food comes out quickly. The bread is always fresh. Personally I do not put the red sauce on my sandwich but some people swear by it. If you come at a busy time then there can be a bit of a line but it is worth the wait. Went to get food and it was 8:50P.m. they were to close at 9 o'clock three people on their way in and as one person came out one of the employees came in and lock the door and told them they were closed. Who does that? I called them and asked why they lock the door and they said well my manager told me to because we were really busy and we had to clean up. I would be firing that manager after you have been closed for so long and then open and close the door on three people ready to walk in to help out your business and buy food. I've worked in food establishments and never turn down a customer or my butt would've been fired. No way to run a business. Highly dissatisfied Not getting my business. It's sad with not many food establishments open. You would think businesses would be happy to serve the public. read more

Somehow this restaurant is listed under the Steakhouse category... maybe because there's no Steak Sandwich section. Either way, the chopped steak sandwiches are delicious and filling. I was comfortably content for the next several hours. Today at lunch, I was trying to recreate a Philly cheesesteak sandwich I had enjoyed years ago in the City of Brotherly Shove... er... Love. It was very tasty, and certainly a solid choice. Onions are present, but are not overwhelming--just right. Doing it again, here at Big Johns, I would have asked for twice or three times the amount of green peppers, and that they be grilled for a short while. As it was, the peppers hadn't had the opportunity for a little caramelization. My daughter, being less adventurous, had a BLT. I had a bite and was immediately impressed by the fresh nutty flavor of the sesame seeds on the bun. The sandwich could have benefited from a little more bacon, but it was certainly a safe choice, and I wouldn't have been upset at having it for my own meal. My wife and I are already talking about what we'd order next time we are in that area. Hopefully that will be soon. read more

I love Big Johns Food but this is about the 3rd time at this location where they do not have the Italian Dressing on the side for our sandwiches . They also will not put some in a little container like they do for your other add ons like banana peppers ! First of all I cant help it that they are always out of the Italian packets for the sandwiches , there is no excuse for that & for the fact they cant put some of the Italian dressing in one of the little cups they have is a bunch of bull. Very poor service, & Management not so good there! I know the pandemic is still causing issues but as the consumer we are paying good money to eat out & this just burns me up. So when my husband got The large Ham & cheese sub They insisted the only way to get the dressing was to have it put on right when it was made , by the time it gets home the bread is all soggy a $14 dollar sandwich is unfit to eat ! Quick tasty steak sandwiches. First time visiting a Big John's - have always seen it around the Flint area and on exit signs along I-75 on the way up north but this was my first time trying. They keep things pretty simple in terms of their menu - with not a ton of topping options - but offer very solid sandwiches at competitive prices. The offer a variety of sizes ranging from 6", 12", up to 16". Staff was friendly and the service was very quick. I recommend the Steak & Cheese sandwich with mushrooms and peppers. If you're not into steak - some of the reviews for the other locations recommend the Chicken sandwich - Big John's also offers an Italian Sub and there are some salads on the menu too. read more
