Note from last weekend- biscuits were overdone and not cooked freshly, but quality of ham forgave that dish for me. Tried the herb Parmesan reggiano fries, great. Potted pig was awesome, something to write home about. Think confit meets pâté with pickled onions and mustard seeds on the side. read more

It would not be uncommon to find us at Big Grove 2-3 times per month, sometimes more. It is hands-down one of our most favorite restaurants in the area. Between our family, friends, and dinner partners, we have probably had everything on the menu. I would not hesitate to recommend anything from the menu. The front of the restaurant is the bar with high top tables and booths. The back of the restaurant has tables and booths. Outside they have tables surrounded by fire pits. The servers know their stuff. Describe what kind of drink you would like and they can rattle off a drink and ingredients. They can pair it with a meal. Super friendly and professional. Service is quick and orderly. BGB partners with local farmers for fresh ingredients. Love our farmers! ANF! Drinks: BGB brews their own beer. Arms Race is a favorite among my crowd. It's not uncommon for us to take a growler home or take a growler as a gift. I prefer more of the cocktails. They are strong. Caution* :) Daughter likes to get a Shirley Temple and son enjoys a root beer. Can't decide? Ask the server for a small sample. Food: My hands-down favorite is the fried chicken sandwich. I do get the chicken plain, no Korean or spicy for me. The chicken is juicy and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. I also pick off the homemade pickles and hand them over to my son. The aoli sauce is delightful. I substitute french fries for Parm fries. Same thing, except they sprinkle parmesan cheese over the top. Each time I always think I'm going to get something different, I want to order something different, but I cannot stop myself from this amazing sandwich. Daughter, who is extraordinarily picky, always gets the bone-in wings. I still do not understand it, but she devours them. Son, who eats anything, also gets the bone-in wings tossed in Korean sauce. Hubby, who refuses to order hamburgers at any restaurant, will order a hamburger here. He also gets the egg on top of the hamburger and is in 7th heaven. A few of our other faves: macaroni and cheese- creamy and cheesy with crunchy bread crumbs on top. It comes out in a teeny cast iron skillet. Super cute. Parm fries-fries with Parmesan cheese sprinkled over the top. Pizza- along the authentic side. Fresh mozzarella. The restaurant is clean and modern. There's not much room if you have to wait. We came here by chance while scouting the area for a potential area to move to. What a find! Quite inconspicuous from the outside and once you're inside it is warm and welcoming. I had the BGB Burger, which was delicious! My wife had the Prime Rib French Dip and we both loved it! They make their own bread! We even asked if they sell the bread plain, but unfortunately they don't. We upgraded our side to the Tater Tot Casserole and did not regret it. Note for next time: don't order it as a side as its a whole meal!! So good. We took the left-overs back to the hotel and had a nice snack there. What a great gem we found. Delicious! Solon and the IA City/CR area are super lucky to have a place like Big Grove. We stopped in on a Friday night for dinner and were greeted with friendly hospitality and good food. Their beer selection is great for a brewery and even better for a small town of 2500. Happy hour is BOGO on select beers, glasses of wine, and well drinks and is served every day they are open (sorry Monday!). The Boy tried a couple of their mixed drinks which were all very well done. It seems silly to go to a brewery and not try the beer but the specialty cocktails were too good to pass up. The Boy had their Friday night special, which was ribs smothered in homemade BBQ sauce, with corn bread, roasted veggies, and cole slaw. It was so good, I almost didn't get to have a bite. I went for lighter fare and got the pretzel and Potted Pig. The Potted Pig was really good (don't forget to stir in all the goodies on the top) but the focaccia it was served with was too hard compared to the soft spread. The server was attentive, helpful with menu recommendations, and very personable. We had such a good time that weekend, we snuck out of the wedding reception we were attending across the street to grab a drink. read more

Big Grove is legit! I live in Cedar Rapids where I have numerous restaurants at my disposal. Big Grove is hands down my favorite. Last night marked my second experience at BG and once again, they didn't disappoint. They know what they're doing and it shows. Everyone works together like a well oiled machine and they don't miss a beat. I have had the New York Strip on both of my visits (outstanding). Others at my table last night had Lobster Risotto (mouth watering delicious), Pork Belly (fantastic) and an Adobo Pork Sandwich with Parmesan-Garlic Fries (amazing flavor explosion). Let's be honest, you're going to be satisfied with anything you order, I promise you that. I really can't say enough about how amazing BG is. Heck, the building itself is enough to make you want to visit! The environment is so versatile. You could stop by for one of their exceptionally brewed beers and watch a game, bring a date for a romantic dinner, sit on their patio around the fire pit with friends, or even stop by on your snowmobile to warm up and grab a bite (witnessed this last night). That's what's so rad about BG, they're so happy you stopped by! No matter why you're there, they welcome you and treat you like you're part of the family. And, if you're fortunate enough, you may also have the pleasure of running into the Christian Mingler (ask the staff to point her out if you don't see her). Ultimately my favorite aspect about BG is I could literally taste their passion in every dish I have devoured and witnessed their passion in everything they do. You don't find that at many places and when you do, you recognize it, appreciate it, tell your friends about it and keep coming back for more. read more

Great place to come and grab a great beer! It is usually busy but fairly large and good at accommodating larger party's and groups. There is usually a wait but it's well worth it. Server was very tentative and informative in helping us make our beer selections. I had the Korean chicken sandwich and found it to be the best chicken sandwich I have had in awhile. Nice big juicy chicken breast,Very crispy breading smothered in Korean sauce. Very tasty and the fries are what I would call above average. Overall I say the prices here are a great value. Our table of 4 waited 12 minutes just to get asked for a beer then my beer sat empty for 10 minutes we all wanted to try the wings but our waitress never even came back to us (over 20 minutes). We ordered takeout since we were passing through Solon on the way back to Illinois from my sister's home. They were great for the ordering process and even were able to give us "to go" soft drinks for the drive. We arrived and they brought out the food to us. We ordered a pretzel and mushroom pizza. The pretzel was fresh and mustard good but the beer cheese was watered down a little. But tasted good. The pizza was not cut at all. That made things difficult to eat in the car on the go. Not sure what happened but one would assume with our order that we needed it cut. The taste of the crust was really good. We expected it to be more crispy since it is wood-fired, but it was soggy from the cheese and mushrooms. The taste of the topping were a little bland. read more

Great food, good beer, pleasant space. Glad we stumbled on this gem in Solon on a recent trip home after thanksgiving. The salad was exceptional and the homemade bread on the sandwiches complemented the ingredients. The buttermilk fried Chicken was generously portioned and came with Korean or Buffalo spicy sauces, the fish was light and seared not breaded, and the cheese sandwich had a delightful variety of cheeses. One of the Managers stopped by our table so we asked about Beers coming out and what would be similar to past beers. He gave us several recommendations and told us to ask the Server for samples. I called several times... after many attempts someone finally answered and then put me on hold ... after 8 minutes I hung up and tried to call again and it just rang and rang. We went to Solon for the first time with some friends for Beef Days. Beef Days were meh, but still glad we went because we discovered Big Grove! First, outdoor patio, outdoor patio, outdoor patio! You get so few nice days in Iowa that when summer comes it is great to sit outside and enjoy the warm sun. Big Grove has a great patio for lounging with friends and being summer-lazy. Second, food, food, food! They have deviled eggs as a starter! I love good deviled eggs and these are tasty and cheap. You also need to grab some of the parm garlic fries!! For dinner, we had the hamburgers which were $9 and big. They came with all the fixins' and with fries. Third, beer, beer, beer! It's in the name, folks! It's a brewery. They have their own great beers on tap. I didn't get to try them because I was the DD for Beef Days, but you know that I'm going to be back. Oh, there is a Pokestop across the street. You can pick it up from Big Grove. I would lure it and just enjoy the patio and a beer while I wait for the lure to work. read more
