The bartenders were super friendly and conversational, they suggested beers for me to try based off the one I got which was so thoughtful! Nice place. Only went once. I think I should say up front, I'm not a beer drinker, aficionado, expert, fan, etc., so this won't be helpful to those of you that are. Sorry! We went there for dinner. With that said, it was ok. Don't recall there being a lot of variety for vegetarians or vegans. But what I ordered I ate! No complaints. Staff was cool. Indoor & outdoor dining. Can get noisy just because of the commercial set up in that area. I really wish Yelp had a half-star option because they were better than 3stars, but not quite 4 either. Stopped in a Sunday afternoon- Here's what I liked : Beer was delicious and cold. Bartender was cool and offered samples of different selections. He was friendly Ordered the BBQ nachos- good amount of toppings and pork. Overall good flavor. Place was mostly empty- while good for me- probably not good for business. Was able to park right out front- Here's what I though could be better: When I picked up my food- that guy didn't say a word. Just started at me. The nachos on the menu said homemade chips- thought that was cool. They were a cross between a pita chip and triangular pizza dough- weirdest nachos ever. Parking seems like it could be an issue- there was an event going on across the street today. Place was empty. Overall- it was ok, beer was as fabulous and the nachos were different. There are two ratings to give out here. One for food and one for drink. The drink is 5/5. They have some of the best brews and distribute around the Midwest. However, the food is just so so here. The Cuban I gave a perfect score to, but the pretzel, brisket queso and margarita pizza were all bland.for the pizza, less crust, more cheese and sauce. read more

Had a great experience here. We had an excellent server behind the bar and also the same person for food. Good selections for beer and tastings are are free. Fun names for selections. Food menu is not large but adequate. Includes Mac and Cheese and Brisket, pizza, and sandwiches. I had the Brisket sandwich served with kettle chips. The sandwich had a generous portion of meat. The bottom bun slice was pretty soggy from juice of the meat serving. No problem, just flip the sandwich and enjoy. We ordered a dessert pizza. Sadly our server had to return to tell us it wasn't available. No problem really--we had plenty of food with the meal. A few minutes later--surprise!! Everything at backpocket was amazing. To start- they have a beautiful venue. There's a big electric fireplace outside which was so enjoyable to sit by. The bar inside is clean and inviting, and the outdoor seating is nicely spaced for private conversations. I was here for a wedding party and they took excellent care of us. Additionally I was able to try so many food and drink options and they were all amazing. I would highly recommend the peach mule and ANY of the Mac and cheese's that I will be dreaming about for years to come, and the brisket was phenomenal. This is one of the OG microbreweries in the Iowa City area. They have a fantastic outdoor patio space and a nice indoor pub area that sits directly in front of their brewery system. They have tried to keep up with the exploding brewery scene but seem to just fall farther and farther behind. The food is decent, but the quality has declined and the menu is limited and lacks creativity. It is one of those places you really want to like and wonder why no one is there when you walk in. Then when you leave you reflect that the experience and beer was underwhelming, which answers those questions you had when you walked in. read more

My most frequented place in Iowa City/Coralville because of mug club! Reaching back into the summer season pics here so these are a few seasonal menu items but any time they combine jalapeños plus smoked meats, I'm in! Pretty sure these were brisket sliders and brisket pizza. My favorite pizzas there are Molly's Mediterranean and the spicy barbecue chicken. We love their mug club, bar staff, vibe, and patio. If you like sour beer (like me) this is definitely the place for you but they also have a good variety of beer selections that rotate pretty often throughout the year! Fantastic! The caprese sandwich is great. The brisket Quesso could use a little more brisket. Gold Coin beer and the yet to be named Rice beer are exceptionally good! The Tiki Sour beer is fantastic. Not too sour and not too hoppy. Luke the Brewmaster gave an exceptional personal tour! He provided more brewing details than any other tour we've been on. The servers were friendly and personable. My husband and I were hungry at the end of a long day. We wandered in about an hour to close and ordered a pizza. The staff was super nice even though I know it's annoying to serve people so close to closing. Pizza was hot and fresh. I had one of the sour beers with marshmallow and it was so good that I bought a four pack after one sip. I also had a house made root beer because I'm a two-drink kinda gal. It was mostly cleared out by the time we got there so it was nice and quiet, but I imagine it gets quite lively during peak times. It was fun to see all the brewing equipment inside. Wanted to try some beer and food this Sunday. The only thing not giving five stars is that I'm not blown away. It's very good food don't get me wrong! We had some very good cheese bread and a pretzel. We had 11th anniversary imperial sour and the tiki sour. The tiki sour was very sweet and tasted great, but I tend to prefer a more intense sourness. The 11th anniversary had a bold strong flavor. Chocolate and vanilla flavors and hint of coconut. A very good stout! We didn't sample the main courses but we will be sure to come back and try later. Was here for the Yelp IC collab event for Pups & Pints. I hadn't been back here in quite some time but everything was setup nicely. The pizzas were great and I had a Gold Coin. The service was very quick at the bar and they'll let you taste whatever is on the board for beers on tap. @theamazingjakethedog enjoyed the newly canned Barkpocket Brews and the outdoor patio was spacious. Every experience I have at Backpocket, kind of falls flat. But I love that we have this brewery in town! Here are three reasons you should go to Backpocket: 1. Pairings. Occasionally they have rad events with their brews paired with pie or bacon or cupcakes or donuts... the list goes on. Not only are they fun, they are tasty and highlight other local businesses. The one I attended was with Scratch Cupcakery. HOLY key lime and beer. Totally worth the $$. Fun was had by all. 2. Patio. I adore outdoor drinking. A nice summer day, cool brew in my hand and my sunnies on-- that is a magical moment. Their patio is legit, with tons of seating. And occasionally they have movie nights out there. (Mean Girls, anyone?!) 3. Beers. Their brews are solid. I recommend getting a flight, if you're unsure what you'd like. They come out with new ones all the time! My go-to is without a doubt Wake Up Iowa. And while I haven't been, they do offer tours on Saturdays at 3pm. With this being their main production facility with 30 barrels-- I bet this would be a good time and cool to see! All that said... Trivia Nights are fun, but get there early! The last one I went to had TONS of people standing and playing. A happenin' place. Which would be fine, but with the self serve style here-- is a bit hard to navigate since the line to order at the bar is so long. Parking can be a bit tricky, especially on busy nights at the IRL. There is a lot across the street though, with a bit of a walk. Service for me has been hit or miss. Typically I've had very nice and attentive bartenders, there aren't really waitresses since you get your own food/drink. But I'll chalk that up to that's just a college town thing. This is a charming and cozy spot in the IRL! They have a wonderful section of beers on tap not found anywhere else in town. I absolutely recommend a flight. My faves include - s'mores porter, coconut cream, and Lemon blueberry. They have a ton of screens to watch the game. They also have a ton of card and board games to have a beer and chill with friends. Food wise they serve fire oven pizzas which are delicious. If you love spice I enjoyed the spicy bbq chicken. It's a small menu and sadly they don't serve fries. You order and grab a buzzer at the bar which adds to the casual fun atmosphere. read more

So, I didn't enjoy myself. First off, you have to go up and order your own food, order your own drinks...then go up and get your food when the buzzer goes off. I don't go to restaurants to serve myself, I can do that at home for free. AND I paid with my card and it asks for a tip...for what exactly? Cool looking interior and friendly bartender. Gave me some tastes of IPA's once I started off with the Raygun. Beers were very good and even the root beer to. One of the best I've had. Grabbed a couple bombers of Big Ern to go. Beer cheese app was the star of the show. So good, wanted some more for the rest of our road trip. Got the Meatza and BBQ chicken pizzas. They both were good not great. Toppings and sauce were tasty but crust could use a little tweaking. Looking at other post our pizzas looked nothing like the other pictures. After hearing both good and bad from this new spot, we decided to try it out with some friends and we were very happy with the decision. Ample outdoor seating and realtively limited seating inside with both benches and small booths inside. Work checking out the outside if you're in the mood. The beer selection currently includes the five brews prepared on site. The Lager is spectacular and the Dunkel is quickly becoming legendary. Apparently the first few batches were sub-par, but at this point, their right on the money. At $4 for a pint and $5 for a 22 oz, trying a couple is much easier than most other places in the area. The 5 offerings are listed below. Slingshot Dunkel - German Dark Lager Gold Coin Helles - German Blond Lager Penny Whistle Wheat - Bavarian Hefeweizen Wooden Nickel Peated Lager - Scottish style Lager Jackknife GPA - German Pale Ale As far as food goes, they've got mosly small plates along with a good variety of brick oven pizzas. Early reports were that most of the pizzas were burnt, however the three our group tried were splendid. The meat combo was particularly good and the margherita left something to be desired. At $9 a shot, they were a little on the high side, but overall were a key part of a solid evening. The cheese tray was also good, but the game changer was the Nutella and Bacon dessert pizza. My wife and I were on the road on our way to Colorado and it was lunchtime we pulled off to go to the Marriott to a grill supposedly that had a four star review when we got there it was closed so we walked past this place and we decided to give it a try we went back and we each order a personal pizza I don't eat cheese so they made me a chicken with barbecue sauce and pineapple pizza and my wife had a regular pizza and it was all great and while I was there I have a little boutique and I bought a running shirt for my granddaughter who is doing cross country love the place read more
