We met friends for a holiday lunch. The waitress was terrific! Very attentive and very aware of what was going on. We started off with some cheese curds, which were breaded and tasty. My husband ordered the special which was a pork chop and I had a Reuben hamburger. It was really big. The hamburger might've been a bit overdone. Friend had a chicken croissant sandwich and said it was delicious. Her hubby had a whisky burger and enjoyed it. We had a dessert pretzel and weren't able to finish it. It was just sweet enough to be a nice ending to the meal. Everyone said their beers were good. I wanted to have a Coke zero but the machine wasn't working and the owner wasn't there to fix it. Not only a joy to be around, very funny, personable, had a heavy hat full of flair and just overall great - the recommendations for beer were plenty, lots of options and and she gave us also some recommendations on what to eat in Iowa City since we were going to head that way afterwards. Inside there was a nice bar area where we sat and was easy to view all the selections while also making friends. The outdoor patio is really cool, especially in the spring / summer - which we were there in summer. Beautiful grassy area outside and just so perfect to enjoy a cold one. This small brewery has a ton of options on tap and is very reasonably priced. And we lucked out that there was live music the night we were there. Not a ton of seating, so we had to stand for a bit but that wasn't a big deal as they had barrels that we could set our drinks on. The bartender let us sample a fee things and made a couple recommendations as well. Love that they have a wide variety of beers, especially a number of lager, pilsners and wheat beers. read more

They drinks were good and the bar munchies we ordered were tasty. The place was super cold inside (but to be fair it was 40 below zero windchill outside) but the service was stellar. Dang. A no frills, does the job taproom that features twenty rotating beers on tap. There are new releases each week and even some live music? Talk about a small-town Iowa hidden gem. Forget the wineries or other small shops when you visit Amana (ok, don't forget about them-- there's plenty of love to go around) but make your way to Millstream Brewing! It's been around for damn near forty years-- a European-style microbrewery that gives tours, has a gift shop, a beer garden and patio seating. I've had their beer before, sold locally throughout Eastern Iowa -- but it wasn't until a random Friday at 3:30PM in October that I made my way to the taproom. (Conveniently across the street from the Hotel Millwright.) The patio was hopping and all the barstools were taken. It is definitely a local favorite. This gotta-visit is open on the daily, pop in for a pint or a to-go six pack. But word to the wise, if you're looking for food-- this isn't your spot. Be sure to visit the Millstream Brau Haus just down the street. read more

We had a nice stop on a Wednesday mid afternoon. It was peaceful and quite on our stop just how I like it. We tried several beers and didnt hate any of them. This place is a delight! The beers they brew here are straight up delicious. The Stout can serve as a great meal by itself and the Amber is delicious. The Octoberfest they have each year is well worth the trip to sample and my theory is that the beer brats that accompany them are delivered straight for Mt. Olympus where Zues dines of them during the sacred week in Fall! Each growler is full of a brilliant dance of beer and happiness and are available for around $8! Great for get togethers! The different types of pops also make this place great for those that aren't big into beers as well. The creme soda, black cherry soda and root beer are all worthy of your time and definitely leave you wanting more. One of the better breweries in the area and with the Amana colonies right there, it's the perfect start, finish, or both to a tour around the area! The outdoor beergarten is a great place on any afternoon that's above 50 degrees and really adds to the ambiance of the quaint town it sits in. Try it - you'll love it! read more

Visited Millstream this past Saturday. It is a beautiful setting to enjoy some beer outdoors on their patio or deck. I don't know anything about the new ownership situation, but I very much enjoyed their Oktoberfest. I liked their Hazy IPA (I forgot what they call it) a little less. The woman behind the bar was very nice and gave me a number of samples. I noticed some negative reviews here. I visit a lot of craft breweries. They all have their winners and losers. I think Millstream is worth a visit and if you hit it on a nice day a lovely place to imbibe outside. read more

What a great find when touring the Amanda colonies which is kind of geared to the AARP type cliental -- no offense Amanas. When I saw the brewery I ran over had a few samplers just like a flight of wine as my padres shopped for quilts antique and cured meats and cheeses. Go Millstream! 1st isn't always best. Credit for being the first/oldest microbrewery in Iowa. But let's be honest, the beers really are not good. The taproom is a generic warehouse with chairs & stools but not appealing and no interesting activities like interacting with the brewer. In fact, the brewing area looks a little tired & could use an update. Hopefully, the new owners didn't pay too much for this place. There are now too many great breweries in Iowa & the Midwest for this one to be more than an Amana novelty. read more

I've been to the Brau house many times, but this was my first trip to the brewery. I was there for an outside event but ventured inside for drinks. It's exactly what you'd expect from the Amanas. Rustic and quaint. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the beer was delicious. I had a peach type that was the best I've had. My granddaughter had a root beer which was also great. My husband and I are on a mission to try all of the breweries Iowa has to offer. Millstream had been on our list for a while, since it's Iowa's oldest craft brewery dating back to 1985, but since we're from Des Moines it took us a while to make our way east. Yesterday we decided to make a trip to the Amana Colonies specifically to visit their taproom. We sat at the bar and shared a flight, which comes as six 5 ounce pours for $9 dollar-- such a great deal! We had the backroad stout, sour peach kolsch, lemon drop shandy, hot John, schild brau, and the German pilsner. I don't care if it's summer the backroad stout is always my favorite- full body oatmeal stout with coffee tones and a smooth finish. We also liked the sour peach kolsch for the opposite reasons- light, tart, and crisp. We were also pleasantly surprised by the hot john, a seasonal beer, which was explained to us as being made with the john's white ale and hot peppers soaked in ever clear. The beer was very aromatic of spicy peppers and had the warmth you'd expect from a pepper, but it wasn't actually spicy. The taproom is big and open and the bar is designed with natural wood with a live edge. The staff was great too! The bartender chatted with us about the beers and was very generous about letting us taste the other beers not in our flight. The beer hall also serves food and treats, which we didn't have but looked wonderful and rustic. read more

With microbreweries all the rage, make sure you take the chance to stop by Millstream Brewing Co. during your visit to the Amana Colonies. I remember my first visit in college (a super long time ago). That's when I fell in love with their wheat beer. I'm not much of a drinker anymore, but I would gladly savor a sip of their Windmill Wheat made on site. For non-drinkers, they make a mean root beer with a sweet kick. Millstream is the oldest microbrewery in Iowa, and it's just so cute! They have a tasting room, but I didn't get the chance to enjoy it this time around since I was with my kiddos. Step inside and you can see the brewing room behind the glass windows. The shop carries a great variety of beer glasses and branded gifts. A cute strip of beer mug lights around the door caught my eye. They have lots of tables outside to sit and visit with friends. read more

No visit to Amana is complete without a Millstream stop! My husband loves their beers. And we love going to relax on the beer garden style patio. I am not a beer fan, but I love their cream soda and root beer because they aren't super carbonized, and have strong vanilla flavoring. The orange cream soda is good, too. They also have tons of fun events that are getting bigger every year. 2 yrs ago we went to the Tour de Brew, which is think is early July, before Ragbrai. Its a pretty good ride - 35 miles, and they have beer/root beer stops every 5 miles or so. You get quite a few tickets to use along the way, but we used them mostly at the end. There was live music and brats/hot dogs waiting for us! There are also usually brats w/ kraut at the Oktoberfest. That is all for my review, now for my favorite memory of this place: It was a busy Saturday, and there were lots of people at the brewery trying to cool down from the summer heat. In front of us was a silly, silly girl, probably just turned 21. She was trying really hard to impress that day - overdone maxi dress, bleached hair, super fake tan, giant shiny sunglasses, talking loudly for all to hear. It was her turn to order (lots of people waiting behind her), and to the no-nonsense manly-man behind the counter, she said this: "uuuuuummm, do you have any wine??" No. they do not have wine. "uuuuum, do you have any, like, mixed drinks?" And I will never forget the stone-cold look on that manly-man's face, as he said, "no, we're a BREWERY." Made my whole day. read more

The shop itself is small and they do offer some souvenirs for purchase (steins, glassware, shot glasses, key chains, etc. The patio is a great place to enjoy your adult brew or root beer. I heard another customer comment on the recently renovated stairs, seems like some good repairs and upgrades are already in place. I wish I could give it no stars, but I can't. Since The Albert's sold it it has gone to crap. The brewer still comes up with delicious concoctions but the new owners are running it like it's the only game in town. I actually witnessed the broad that owns it chew out an employee in a room full of customers like she was screaming at cab driver, a genuine Karen. The beer is in cans which cheapens otherwise good beer. Take my advice, hit 30 hop instead. read more

This brewery is so CUTE! I wish we could have enjoyed our beverages outside on their adorable patio...but we sat inside due to chilly temps. We didn't have a lot of time, but we sipped on a pint and relaxed in their tasting room, which overlooked their brewing equipment. Try some Octoberfest before the season ends. As a home brewer, I am always interested in micro breweries when we travel. Millstream is a great find. The beer is not good - it is excellent! I like their "now and later" program - drink your fill and then buy some carry out. Also, it is right on the bike trail. Only had time for a brief stop and a a single beer, but it was an absolutely to-die-for Pumpkin Stout. My companion had their home brewed Root Beer, and it was excellent as well. I'm a microbrew aficionado (and yes, a beer "snob"). This is hands-down the best stout I have ever had in my life. I realize it's seasonal, but if this one was this good, I'm sure their stouts are excellent year round. Friendly staff, good service. It was cold and rainy, so I didn't try the patio, but it looked very inviting. Millstream has a good selection of beers and their cream soda is DELICIOUS. We came to the Amana Colony while visiting my sister-in-law in Iowa City for Thanksgiving, and we had an excellent time. It was VERY cold to sit outside, but the inside was stuffed, so we did for a little while... but they have some great beers and an excellent little gift shop here. I was impressed, especially seeing their beers at restaurants in Iowa City as well. Visiting this brewery for a drink was a great end to a day-long visit to Amana. read more

Stopped off at the Amana Colony on our way from NH to visit my hometown of Des Moines and found this gem of a craft brewery! Who knew?! It's been here for 28 years and I just found it (to be honest, I lived in Iowa all my early life and never once visited the Amanas either). We stopped by for a tasting and left with several brews, which is saying a lot for my husband who lives near Smuttynose and can be p-r-e-t-t-y snobby about his beer. I'm sorry I didn't catch her name (maybe Rachel?), but the young woman serving us was wonderful. A terrific find - made our day! read more

So nice. We rode our bikes on the short 4 or 5-mile trail right next to the brewery, and then sat outside Millstream to sample a flight of 6 of their beers. It only cost $10 and you get to keep the adorable taster glass with the Millstream logo on it after you're done. I will definitely bring visitors here for a relaxed bike and brew afternoon again soon. read more

This was my 6th or 7th straight time partying at Millstream during Octoberfest and I'm starting to recognize all the regulars that return every year like swallows. The "Lemon Sisters" were there from Peoria. The stoggie-smoking Cards fans from St. Louis were back as well as plenty locals. Dogs on Skis had the crowd rockin' and the beer wenches were selling $11 pitchers as fast as they could pour them. Millstream does several events a year and this one gets more popular every year. They now have an small indoor drinking area so you can keep the party going year-round. Oh yeah, the brew is good too. read more
