Came here for dinner with my family and some friends and we were seated right away. There's a lot of space in this restaurant, which is nice. We ordered the crab and shrimp dip, which was yummy. For my main meal I got the fried basket with fried shrimp and calamari. It wasn't amazing. The calamari was definitely overcooked. My dad also got a fried shrimp and instead of telling him that they ran out of something they just added hush puppies without telling him, which was strange. Let's start by saying that when you live in an area such as Jacksonville, with fresh seafood well-prepared and relatively close, there is no reason to put up with inferior seafood. Lesson learned. I will never go to the "Big Crab" or anything like it ever again. The smell of raw sewage as we walked in the door should have been my first clue. Literally, the place reeked. At least half of it. We, and most of the other patrons moved to the further corner from the restrooms were the odor seemed to be emanating from. No explanation given when we asked our server what the issue was. On to the food - this is one of those boil-in-a-bag and dump it in a bowl type of place. I had the Snow Crab combo. Your basic boiled snow crab dinner which included boiled potatoes, corn on the cob, sausage, and a dozen peel and eat shrimp. The crab was okay, the corn over-cooked and mushy, sausage okay, the shrimp were not fresh and overcooked. My companion had the Dungeness Crab legs, and she said they were fine. Here's the kicker if you ever go here... They add in an "Automatic Gratuity" to the subtotal and taxes before presenting you with the Grand Total. Likely hoping that most people will just look at the bottom line (Grand Total) to calculate a gratuity or look at the suggested gratuity which is calculated from the Grand total which already includes "Automatic Gratuity." If you do this the server will be very happy because your actual gratuity will be well in excess of you might typically pay. Beware! This place struck out on all categories in my opinion. Greeted quickly and friendly happy waiter. Had one of the baskets - shrimp and oysters however they served Calamari(didn't tell me they were out of Oysters). They apologized and waiter provided additional shrimp. The steamed combinations were the hit, fresh and hot but it does take a bit longer to prepare as the fried meals came out first. At that point, I honestly would have preferred if they had just called my name and had me pick up the order from a window. When I expressed my concerns about the experience to the waitress, she showed little to no sympathy. For a bill that high and such minimal service, the lack of basic customer care was frustrating and disappointing. Since our visit, my one-year-old has unfortunately been dealing with stomach issues, which has been very concerning as a parent. Because of this, I will be reporting my experience to the health department to ensure proper food safety standards are being followed. I am surprised I have not written a review for Big Crab Seafood. We have been there numerous times (dine in and take out). We enjoy having a nice big bag of seafood and just digging in. It's fun to share with friends & relatives who may not have seen this type of dining experience. The food has always been tasty. We like to order it "medium" to give it a little bit of kick. There is a special every day so we typically find the day of the week that lines up to our cravings/favorites. We regularly visit Big Crab during Lent season on Fridays. They have specials everyday, but I would say that Friday is the best day! For a great deal of $19.99, you get crawfish, shrimp, corn, sausage and potatoes, huge serving! We usually substitute the sausage for eggs and they were kind enough to accommodate us. Medium sauce is great too, just enough kick to notch up your taste buds! Delicious and vey filling! The servers are always fast and attentive despite having a great deal of customers. Experience here was OK. Started off a bit disappointed because Dungeness crab was unavailable. They offered free pork rinds, which we said yes to and it was crispy and tasty. Ordered 6 raw oysters and 6 steamed oysters which were actually good. We also got the calamari that was disappointing as it was bland and the meat was sparse. The crab cheese dip was curdling so the consistency was off. The best part was the seafood boil but the sauce didn't have the kick I was expecting (I ordered the medium spice level). I love seafood boil and this is a solid spot. I really liked their menu selection as well as the specials. Their sauce was a great combination of flavors. Our server for it being a slower Sunday was not present when we needed him. We ordered water when we sat down but didn't receive it until I followed up after our food arrived. My beer also took about 15 minutes to come out, even though the restaurant was not busy at the time. Additionally, around 9:00 p.m., staff began placing chairs around us and sweeping near our table, which made us feel rushed while still eating. I understand it was close to closing, but we arrived at 8:30, well before then. Having worked in the restaurant industry myself, I also know that sweeping around guests while they are eating is not sanitary. Despite these issues, I still left a good tip because I value this restaurant. Went here Friday evening with a party of 10. Thankfully they were able to seat us as soon as all of our parties arrived. located in Normandy with plenty of parking spots. Our friends has been here but this was my first time. The restaurant was pretty spacious which is great. we were seated close at the very back and their ceiling fans was blowing which was fine with me but it ws already cold inside and there was a light in the ceiling that really bothered me with the fan on ( you might find it weird but the movement of the light with the fan was too much and it actually made me feel a little dizzy) Thankfully after talking to our server they were kind enough to turn the fan off. Our group ordered the fries, mozzarella and the shrimp and crab dip, I did not try any of the appetizers but all of my friends said it was good. They also give you a complimentary chicarones which I tries and I liked it. We all ordered different things. The restaurant is nice and clean, and even when full, it didn't feel overly crowded. Service was great- prompt, courteous and attentive. My husband and I ordered the BC combo #4, which included 2 snow crab clusters, shrimp, crawfish, and mussels in medium house sauce. Decided to stop by and try this place on a Saturday around 1400 and it was pretty legit. They have a great view of many football games because they have plenty TVs for your entertainment. The people that own these really don't GAF about a complaint or anything because they know folks will be back anyways...but this is my 2¢.. I asked about a fish basket. Server told me they had cod, and if you get the "pick 2 on the menu, you get 2pc...it's $19.99. I couldn't fathom paying $20 for 2 small pc of cod, so I got the chicken tender basket. 3 tenders for $17.99. The killer is.. my basket came out in the same basket as my kids, and I got one extra tender. Mind you, the kids meal is like $7.99. I don't really enjoy going to places where you feel like since you got ripped off, you've gotta eat every drop of food to get your moneys worth...crumbs included. But for what it is, it's decent. After searching for a crab boil near me, I finally found one! The inside was freezing cold with the AC so we opted for outdoor, which was very pleasant. Service was friendly with a smile, and the seafood boil was plentiful. I wasn't sure how I felt about the green muscles as I am more accustomed to Prince Edward, the corn didn't taste like fresh but more like frozen, but the crab was very good as well as the shrimp and the potatoes were to die for! Love the options of seasonings from spicy hot to mild. They offer military discounts, which is very nice as well as a Yelp 10% discount. Sunday I went down to the Big Crab for dinner. After sitting down it shocked me how much they were charging for crabs; I know everything is high today, but damn. I ended up getting a fried basket with oysters and shrimp; the oysters were not too good, but the shrimp was pretty good. My kid got chicken fingers and they were pretty horrible because they are cooked with the oil used to cook the seafood; so they tasted like oysters. The dogs enjoyed them. Service was ok, but not too great. It took a long time to get our food and the server was busy cleaning and getting ready to close at 7PM. Use to be the Boiling Crawfish which I absolutely loved. But the flavors of the seafood definitely stayed.
