Went to eat at Big Bowl before attending a theater performance. I dined at a location in the city many years ago. This location was easy to find and had ample parking. Our waiter was friendly and offered advice on our meal choices. My friend chose the Big Bowl while I ordered chicken curry panang. Both dishes were delicious and the plates were filled. Plenty of food. You won't be disappointed! I am looking forward to returning.

Double protein chicken and beef, with rice and noodles.

Big Bowl is consistently one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. Their Stir Fry options allows you to customize which protein(s) you want (I prefer both beef and chicken), noodles or rice (again, I prefer both), and you either pick or own veggies or they can give you a pre-set list. The Chinese ginger garlic sauce (order extra!) is delicious. While I am typically a sandwich type of person, this meal is delicious, very fresh tasting and the staff are always super friendly and attentive. Big Bowl- please come to SW Florida!!!

Chicken Potstickers
Tina T.

We ordered the chicken potstickers, Calamari and crab Rangoon for appetizers. The potstickers smelled and tasted great, but I was expecting them to be more crispy being pan-fried-- the texture seemed more like steamed dumplings. The Calamari was great and as expected. Crispy with a nice chew. The Crab Rangoon crab cream cheese filling hit the spot, however, they seemed to be fried too long. Instead of a light golden brown, they were dark with translucent edges and corners. I appreciated how accommodating, informative and the extra precautions the server took regarding my son's peanut allergy. They fry dishes with cashews and nuts in the dryer, so to avoid cross contamination, my son's Orange chicken dish was prepared differently than usual. My daughter ordered the orange Chicken from the kid's menu while my son ordered the Orange Chicken lunch bowl. There was a significant difference in portions between the kids menu, lunch and dinner items. I ordered the Pad SeeEw. I liked that there was a lot of vegetables, but felt like it was very salty, the basil was overpowering, and the noodles were burnt. I did like the chicken to noodle/vegetable ratio. The portion was good, but felt it was just too salty. The service was good. It was strange that the host brought a teapot out at the end of the meal as opposed to the beginning. I though but it was a bit strange that when Our appetizer plates were empty, the server/staff would walk by and not pick them up. It was only strange because we went for an early lunch (11:30a) and the restaurant was not crowded/busy. It felt awkward that the empty dishes piled up. The ambience was stylish and contemporary. It seemed to match the type of fusion cuisine through the use of red and black colors and modern decor.

Great stir fry Chinese food. Lots of selection but the stir fry was unique and worth a visit. Great hot sauce and chicken portions. Staff are lovely and attentive. Temperature was scorching but it was also 100 outdoors.

Cashew Tofu

I have been here more times than I care to admit over the last year, and have had the opportunity to try the majority of the vegetarian dishes. The cashew tofu is definitely my favorite, as it has the right amount of kick to it! The vegetable dumplings are also a solid choice for a starter to share, and the chocolate fudge cake is a rich treat to share with a friend or two. The portions here are MASSIVE, but who's complaining?! The service has always been impeccable, and the restaurant is great for large groups, or a more intimate dinner with a loved one. Solid, safe choice if you're looking for a good place to grab stir fry in the area.

The food at Big Bowl was amazing everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. We really enjoyed our meal. The only issue was with the girl who brought the food to our table (not our actual waiter). She clearly wasn't in a good mood and it showed she practically threw the plate to my husband. I understand everyone has rough days, but in a customer-facing role, attitude matters. A small change in energy would've gone a long way. Still, the food was great, and we'd definitely come back just hoping for a more pleasant overall experience next time.

I recently tried Big Bowl for a team dinner at the Lake Forest location and it was a good experience. We ordered a lot of appetizers to share - crispy vegetarian potstickers and spicy sichuan green beans. My coworkers also tried steamed chicken gyozas. The apps were very impressive and we all liked it a lot! I have been to the Big Bowl outlet in downtown area many a times. They don't have the make your own stir fry option since covid. I was glad that the Lake Forest location offered make your own stir fry. I added a lot of favorite veggies to the bowl. It was really good and worth the buck! My coworker ordered a beef Mongolian rice, fried rice without egg, and green thai curry with rice. Everyone was very delighted with their food choices. Overall, an amazing place, and pretty reasonable too!

Service is phenomenal! Super friendly and welcoming. Outdoor seating is perfect. The aroma of the food smells amazing. This is my first time here but definitely not my last!

After Golden Chef closed, we waited a very long time for a worthy Chinese restaurant to take its place. Yu's Mandarin shows promise of becoming just that. So far, we've only tried their takeout. There were a couple of times we considered celebrating special occasions there, but we were disappointed to learn they didn't serve whole chickens or whole fish, which are essential dishes for traditional Chinese celebrations. Because of that, we held off on dining in. Thankfully, they now offer whole fish. Although it's on the pricier side, it's a step in the right direction and gives us hope that Yu's Mandarin could become a place for future family gatherings. For now, this review is based on our takeout experience. Vivian, who also speaks Cantonese, was knowledgeable and friendly over the phone. She answered our questions with confidence and helped us navigate the menu. On occasions when a younger staff member struggled with menu details, speaking with Vivian made a big difference. According to my husband, who picked up the orders, the parking lot is quite small, and parking can be a bit tricky. As for the food itself, it's been a mix of hits and misses. The Crabmeat and Velvet Corn Soup was a standout, smooth, flavorful, and reminiscent of what you'd find at a high-quality Chinatown restaurant. The Double Pan-Fried Noodles with Seafood was my favorite: crispy noodles, generous portions of fresh seafood, and a well-balanced sauce. On the other hand, the Garlic Chicken lacked garlic flavor and the chicken was not tender enough. Yang Chow Fried Rice is listed as "Mixed Meat Fried Rice" on the menu, was bland and short on ingredients. Despite a few missteps, we are happy to have what seems to be an authentic Chinese restaurant close to home. We are looking forward to dining in soon and trying more items from their menu. With some consistency and continued improvements, Yu's Mandarin could truly become a neighborhood favorite.

Tucked into a no-frills corner on the South Side, Dai Yee's looks modest from the outside, but step in after 10 p.m. and it's pure magic. The room is packed with everybody--sneakerheads, nurses coming off shift, club kids, cops, and couples on first dates who somehow heard the legend. The vibe is chaotic in the best way: woks roaring, orders flying, and that unmistakable perfume of sizzling garlic, ginger, and chili filling the air. The food is straight-up stupid good. The Hong Kong-style salt & pepper smelts are crackly, spicy, and gone in 30 seconds. The beef chow fun has that elusive wok hei (breath of the wok) that most places only dream of, wide rice noodles slick with smoky char and tender flank steak. The black pepper beef tenderloin is velvet-soft, glossy, and aggressively peppery in a way that makes you order extra rice just to survive the happiness. The Singapore noodles are bright curry perfection, and the Mongolian beef is saucy, crispy-edged, and borderline addictive. Portions are straight out of the 90s--massive trays that could feed a family of four for under $15. Cash-only, BYOB, and everything comes out blazing hot in under ten minutes even when the place is slammed. The ladies running the show are legends: fast, funny, and they'll roast you (lovingly) if you can't handle the spice level you asked for. If you leave Chicago without hitting Dai Yee's at least once (preferably at 1 a.m. with a six-pack), you didn't really experience the city. This is real-deal, no-filter, soul-satisfying Chinese food that reminds you why we fall in love with restaurants in the first place. Dai Yee's isn't just a restaurant; it's a Chicago institution in the making. I'd wait in line in a blizzard for those smelts. See you at midnight.
