Conduct Observed During My Father's Funeral Service…read more Dear Mr. O'Connor, I feel compelled to bring to your attention an incident that occurred during my father's funeral services that was both surprising and profoundly disappointing. As I walked past the last pew, I overheard one of your staff members speaking with a woman I did not recognize and referring to me by saying, "Oh, that's the one." In an environment that is supposed to embody dignity, discretion, and professionalism, it was unsettling to witness what appeared to be casual commentary about a grieving family member during the service itself. Such remarks -- particularly when made within earshot -- create the unfortunate impression that private family circumstances are being treated as conversation rather than handled with the respect and confidentiality one reasonably expects from mortuary professionals. I chose not to address the comment at that moment out of respect for the solemnity of my father's service. However, the incident has stayed with me. Families come to a funeral home during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, trusting that the staff present understands the gravity of that responsibility. Observing behavior that suggested otherwise was both jarring and disappointing. I am certain that the standards you expect within your organization are far more reflective of professionalism and discretion than what I experienced that day. For that reason, I felt it important that you be made aware of the situation. I would welcome your assurance that this matter will be addressed so that other grieving families are not placed in a similar position. Appalling...
