We enjoyed a wonderful weekend stay at Council Grounds State Park…read more The campground itself is relatively small--just one loop for small group campers and one for large group (ie: large parties of 25-30 folks). We stayed in the loop for small group campers and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The campsite offered some privacy being surrounded by woods and brush. We explored the hiking trails and they were all well maintained. There was a nice area for putting in your kayak or canoe into the Wisconsin river. There was also areas that you could easily take a dip in the river to cool off as well. While we were there, they only had pit bathrooms available (though one of them was newly constructed, clean, and comfortable for a pit bathroom) but they were in the process of constructing (or reconstructing, not sure) a new bathroom and shower building which will reportedly be done mid August 2024! It's not the biggest, most grand state park but it's a gem of a park and there's a coziness and charm to the smaller size that we really enjoyed. Get to it!

They offer everything one would expect from a small craft brewery, both in terms of style and pour sizes -- everything from tastes, to flights, to small seven ounce pours (shorties), to a full pint. I had shortie pours of their lager and IPA. The lager was light and refreshing but not thin and watery (think "lite beer"). The IPA was lightly hopped compared to many IPAs on the market these days -- which I thought was good -- one can taste and enjoy the hops without being overpowered by them. The taproom is located in a storefront on the downtown main street. The decor has an "up north vibe" but I wouldn't say it is attractive or coherent in style. There's a bunch of historical memorabilia on display hearkening back to the old days when every town had its own local brewery -- which in this town was (of course) The Rhinelander Brewery. The staff was friendly and could readily talk about their products. The Rhinelander Brewery is not that much different from hundreds of other small craft brew taprooms around the country, so I'll stick with three stars, which for me means average -- but totally acceptable -- in terms of everything one would expect from an establishment like this. We stayed in Tomahawk, WI for an extended holiday weekend and were looking for a spot to do some…read morepaddle boarding. While there's tons of lakes in the area, not all of them are ideal for paddle boarding. Buck Lake (which is part of the Almon Recreational Area) most definitely is! They don't rent out paddle boards right at the lake, so if you don't have your own, you'll definitely have to rent one elsewhere and bring it here. We have our own, so that wasn't a problem. The Almon Recreation Area includes a paved path leading to a small beach and nice little swimming area in Buck Lake. The beach also offers a great launching point for paddle boards. The lake itself is relatively small and wake free, so, even if the beach area is busy, you can easily paddle out to serenely crowd free conditions. We went three days in a row on a holiday weekend and only ever came within shouting distance of one canoe and one paddle boat. Beyond that, we had the lake to ourselves. Just above the beach is a wooded picnic area, complete with grills, picnic tables, and bathrooms. The recreation area also includes (down a separate paved path) a pretty epic frisbee golf course that meanders through the woods as well a trail system if you're looking to take scenic hike. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail system. No pets (leashed or otherwise) are allowed at the beach/picnic area.

Always was fine. Average bar. We liked it because it was on the water. This last time we stopped... we sat on the outside patio. We had our dog with and asked if he could sit on the patio. The female bartender said "of course". There was another couple and a family sitting outside who also had a dog. Our dog was laying next to me quietly and is extremely well behaved. Barely lifts his head. One of the workers, a 30-40 yr old man with dark hair, asked the other bartender "do you think I can make this bottle cap hit that dog"? I was sitting slightly turned from him and ignored him. I did not think he would actually do it. Well, he did. He began flicking bottle caps at my dog who was laying peacefully! After the third one I turned around and said "excuse me? What are you doing?" He said "I wasn't trying to hit him don't worry I'd never do that" and quick ran inside like scared sheep. Didn't show his face after that. I could not believe what had happened. I think this bar is fine and everyone who works there is nice BESIDES THAT GUY. What the he11 is wrong with him? How rude can you be ? Who does that ? What a weirdo.
