In past summers we have stopped once a week- the cones were huge, the staff were friendly and it was a great bang for your buck. I get that costs have gone up, but they no longer offer sizes that families need. Because their cones are so large, a single scoop is WAY too large for a kid and a ton of it goes to waste. They no longer offer a tiny cone, which they did away with this year. The cost of a single cone was also risen drastically. Now, while the staff is friendly, and the cones are huge, it is a little pricey with not good choices for the little ones. Have started going to DQ instead where I can get a child's size cone for a fraction of the price of the windmill's single serve. read more

Spent the weekend up here with two other couples and on our last night stopped here for ice cream. We pulled up with about thirty minutes to close and the line was ten deep outside the door. I was worried that we might not get served, but per one of the other reviews that line moves fast, really fast. All six of us got our ice cream and I didn't listen to my friends as they said the amounts are enormous. I got two scoops in a waffle cone. Geez! It was like four lbs of ice cream. Maybe exaggerating a bit, but never been to any place that's so generous with the amount for a scoop or two. Glad I didn't get three! With that said, the ice cream was delicious and I did finish my two scoops of cotton candy waffle cone about 30 minutes later. Delicious! I would recommend anybody grab a single scoop unless you are super hungry walk over to the bridge and watch the boats go through! It's fantastic! read more

Ok, this place was a good selection of ice cream for you to choose from. But they don't let you sample any of the flavors. Very odd for an ice cream shop. Luckily for us, we all loved our ice cream. But I will say that there is probably no reason ever for you to need more than 1 scoop of ice cream. Each "scoop" is easily over a pint of ice cream!!! read more

Great roadside joint in the Northwoods. Very busy in the middle of summer with constant in and out flow of locals and visitors stopping in for a cone. The size of *all* cones is massive, even the tiny one-scoop cone has what seems to be three scoops on it! The variety of flavors is unique. I had the blueberry cheesecake with blueberry sauce in a sugar cone. This flavor sadly didn't have any chunks of cheese cake in it. The blueberry sauce was a little overpowering, and I could have done with out it. Seemed like such a great idea though! The chocolate flavors were delicious- there is a flavor with peanutbutter, and the missississipi mud pie was also delicious with coffee flavored ice cream and oreo and fudge chunks. I wish they allowed samples! Or at least limited the number of samples if holding up the line is a concern. This shop is a great place for a summer treat if you're in the area. read more

Ripe Rasberry Chocolate Chunk is the best flavor...in fact, when we went their 3 times and they had already sold out or we missed it (since they have roughly 30 interchangeable flavors), the owner sent us a text message when the flavor was in and held us 3 triple scoop bowls! We made a special trip to the Windmill while staying in Tomahawk for my ice cream loving son. We arrived on a weekday evening (the week before they close for the season) and were the only ones in the shop. We perused the various flavors then asked if we could try one. We were quickly told no, they don't give samples. To my surprise I asked why (I'd never been in an ice cream shop that didn't give samples) and was told because it holds up the line. I then made a show and looking around and joked that we were literally the only ones there. The boy working the counter then actually said it wouldn't be fair to others if he gave us a sample. Seriously?!? Our little group of four couldn't believe it. We recounted this story and his silly reasoning to family in town and we all had a good laugh about it. I told the kid we'd traveled 2,000 miles (we'd come from Florida, it was actually only about 1,200 miles, but still) to come to this ice cream shop and they wouldn't give us a sample?? He stuck to his guns and said nope. Ha! They even denied my priest uncle a half scoop. This place really has some rules! We did get ice cream anyway and the single scoop is huge (you better like the flavor that you can't sample, lol). The ice cream quality isn't anything spectacular but the prices were reasonable (four of us cost $7). Customer service definitely needs some work but overall it gave us a funny story and them a 3 star review. read more

Fantastic, great for those hot summer days on the Lake. My only objection, and not to the fault of the owners/management, is that there is only enough spots to dock 2 boats on the pier. We unfortunately missed out on ice cream one evening. We sat with our small children in the boat for nearly 45 minutes, as the patrons that filled 2 boats that were docked chit-chatted by the water. Completely ignoring the fact that there were a couple other boats waiting to dock. We ended up leaving, 2 sad kiddos because others were not so courteous to the others wishing to enjoy a treat . read more

Not one of them greeted us, said may I help you, or even smiled during the entire time we were there. We got the impression that they would rather have been anyplace but there. Before I get to the good stuff I will say this: it sucks that there are no samples or half scoops. I don't remember the last time--if ever-- that I went to an ice cream shop of any kind that did not offer samples. I understand some people may come in and want to sample every single option (I didnt count but I would estimate there are 15 different flavors) and that would be annoying but it would be appreciated if they would allow 3 samples to each guest. Even two. Even one. So, you better hope that you are familiar with the flavor you are ordering because if you don't like it, no going back. However, the price is amazing. For 3 of us to all get generous portions of ice cream it cost $8 and change. Very very reasonable. I can't remember the name of the flavor I got but it was bright yellow and delicious. I highly recommend. I got a "tiny scoop"...I was thinking I was going to get about 1/2 of a normal scoop size but in actuality I got about 3-4 scoops of ice cream that just happened to be stuffed inside a "tiny" kids cone. This cost $1.50 - wow, what a deal. The other people I was with ordered a waffle cone with 2 different flavors (I think they were just vanilla and chocolate) and the other person ordered a small cup of butter pecan ice cream. Each of us was very impressed with the ice cream and more so, the price. The portions are GENEROUS! The staff, however, was not too friendly. They weren't particularly rude but they were by no means friendly, warm, or welcoming. Not what you'd expect from a tiny place in a small town. If they offered samples and improved their staff, they would get 5 stars from me. read more
