It's 6 1/2 years later....I was walking by here today and the nice window display compelled me to go inside. The selection is as good as the last time and I would have loved to buy something, but the prices remain high. The female owner approached me immediately this time and she was very friendly. Also, the youngish guy (perhaps he's the same one as previously) had a great sense of humor. **Note that on April 30, they're moving (to an even larger store) at 221 West 79th Street.** read more

I bought a cordless vacuum cleaner for $38.99. It takes several hours to charge and in less than 15 minutes the motor stops running, charging needed. Can I return the piece of junk that I bought from Big Bag? read more

This store is a neighborhood gem. Formerly on W 72nd street, they've now moved up to W 79th. They have an incredible selection of "accessories" including purses, backpacks, wallets, suitcases gloves, scarves, jewelry and more. I've purchased a suitcase as well as several backpacks and purses from them over the years and have found the owners and staff to be very helpful and knowledgeable. When I was looking to replace the MZWallace backpack I bought from them a few years back (after 2+ years of daily use it was time for a new one) I popped into Big Bag to buy a replacement. They had the style I wanted but did not have the color so the owner offered to order it for me. A few days later I got a text from Big Bag saying my backpack was in and ready for pickup. Easy peasy. You can't get much better than that. read more

Great bags and accessories. The owners are also great to deal with! I've purchased many bags and accessories from Big Bag and have been very happy with my purchases! I purchased a bag in November 2020 and the zipper pull broke off April 2021. The owner repaired it right there in about 10 minutes. No questions asked and super easy to deal with. Thanks Big Bag! read more

Overpriced and ordinary. Nothing special and pushy sales people.

I've visited this store before and always loved browsing for various bags. Today I went in with the intention of buying a bag but I left empty-handed. Talk about pushy sales. This lady refused to leave me alone; that's until the very end. As customary, she came by and asked what I was looking for. I told her that I'm extremely picky when choosing a bag and that I prefer to just browse to get a sense of everything they had. So, she came by within a few seconds to recommend some bags. I liked them, she had me try them out and look in the mirror. I wasn't too keen on them. She then continuously kept on recommending me bags and I nixed all her recommendations. I had mentioned I was interested in sturdy nylon bags earlier but I got side-tracked as I really loved a leather bag they had. The salewoman proceeded to tell me, "well, that's not nylon," to suggest that it was too expensive for me. Funny, cause I never mentioned price range. She then proceeded to tell me that they just don't have anything for me and that I should come back. Didn't I say I was picky about choosing a bag and that I'd rather browse? I asked her if they're closing right that second. She said no. So I continued to browse. She finally got the hint and started helping another woman; someone who she didn't even bother to address until the woman went to her. I guess this sales lady had it out for me. I took a good browse, saw some bags I liked, and got the brand names and will buy them elsewhere. read more

This is truly an NYC store - high style and run by the loveliest family for decades. The selection of hand bags, accessories, jewelry and luggage from France, Italy, Japan - all over - are curated by the owners, who travel yearly to Europe to source. I've followed them since they were in the West Village and bought both glam and practical items! read more

This used to be one of my favorite local stores on 72nd. I just went into the location on 77th. The store was empty and the sales woman was on her phone, loud and obviously annoyed dealing with a personal return issue from Amazon. She paused, made a rude comment to me and my daughter - rudely asked if we needed help and then went about her phone call. I am very disappointed to see such poor service in a formerly beloved neighborhood store. Their selection is unique but prices are too high for such poor service. Unlikely I'll return or go out of my way to go back. read more

Marimekko galore! That's why I love this place so much. Stopped by yesterday and almost walked out with a couple of bags... Good thing I didn't. My wallet would have hated me afterwards! But someday I WILL spend money here and a lovely bold Marimekko bag will be hanging off my shoulder! Friendly salespeople. Great selection of purses, backpacks, laptop bags, wallets, make-up bags, etc. read more

Wallets and bags are so personal. "Big Bag" has a marvelously curated selection. Made the mistake of going to Tumi, Nordstrom, and Bloomie's first - then remembered this terrific little shop with a big selection. While I was perusing the wallets (mine had been stolen the day before), not only were the proprietors helpful - so were some other loyal Big Bag shoppers who happened into the store while I was there. Great stuff, great value. Shop local! (Their new space on the south side of W. 72nd is brighter and even better than the place they had been across the street for many years.) read more

As previous reviewers have noted, this store benefits from an attentive, helpful staff. And it has a terrific selection of luggage - brands I didn't know about, and others I've seen very well reviewed online. The bonus is how attractive everything in the shop is, as clearly they select for aesthetics as well as quality. There are lots of travel and purse accessories that are just ... well, a lot of fun. I got a bright luggage tag that makes me smile every time I look at it. Found a v. good suitcase, not "cheap," but Big Bag charged me much less than the lowest prices at the various luggage websites, and I could wheel it right home. I've already traveled w/ it once and it proved to be worth the cost. read more

Great selection of purses and wallets, the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Lots of different styles and colors. Love this store.

This is a huge, huge store, with one of the best selections of midpriced bags I have ever seen. The brands are excellent. You're not going to find a Marc Jacobs purse here, but you can find great backpacks, luggage, overnight totes, cute evening purses, and they also carry a small but chic line of accessories like earrings. I really enjoyed discovering this shop. I bought a Baggolini small backpack for schlepping around the city last fall that was the best investment I ever made. Well, actually, my Merrell sandals I got to bring to Paris in April were the best investment I ever made, but this is a close second. read more

Loved this place when it was on 8th St; purchased a couple of things from them. Even when I didn't need a bag, I'd love to browse their well-edited selection of chic totes, clutches, toiletry cases, wallets, etc. Lots of good stuff from bag specialists like Orla Kiely, Marimekko, Tano, Tumi, etc. read more

What a pretty little (narrow) store on 72 and Amsterdam, The proprietors are lovely and they have a great selection of leather goods and jewelry. They are one of the few who carry the french jewelry designer, MIRAVIDI. GO and buy, its worth it. read more

I love this store and hope it stays in my UWS neighborhood forever. The splendid selection of bags, scarves and jewelry continue to expand and there's always something new that I can't resist buying. This is about their luggage...I don't have the right parts to carry a purse. That said, their luggage selections are fairly lackluster if you want anything other than Tumi. Store is good, staff is friendly, prices weren't within my range. read more

Saw the Time Out review of Big Bag. I know this store and think its bags are works of art. Such rich leather, very smart. The bags and wallets in the store delight the buyer but even more, delight any viewer. Megan read more

I stumbled across this store by accident after a walk in Central Park and fell completely in love. They have so many different brands, colors, and styles of bags that I had a hard time picking out just one bag. I ended up choosing the cutest violet/gray lambskin Zin bag ever and use it all the time. The staff was super helpful and didn't get sick of me taking so long to make a decision. They also had some very cute jewelry, luggage, and wallets that were very tempting! I can not wait to go back again! read more

if you like pretty things (and pretty people, but that goes unsaid), this is a refreshing little oasis...walk in and be welcomed by the soothing sight of bags, bags, everywhere...in all stripes, dots, and shapes cute and pretty. funny how you never realized you needed so many things until now...like an infusion of orla kiely...and hobo...and other shiny objects you just can't stop reaching out for. and if your laptop needs a cute new outfit too, well, it won't feel left out now. read more

I bought a Hobo wallet from Big Bag about a year ago. But after continuous use, the coin purse clasp stopped closing shut. I took it in and told them what happened, and it took one of the men working there 5 seconds to fix it. So glad I stopped in to ask! read more

I've bought two handbags here over the past two years and am both incredibly happy with the bags and very satisfied with their service. There's no pressure at all and they work with you to find the bag you want. I've yet to find such an incredible selection and literally every time I wear one of their bags I get comments - in fact, if I had money for all the great comments I get, I'd be in Europe traveling for a year! Unique handbags, fair prices and great service - I won't shop for handbags anywhere else. read more

The Big Bag is my favorite go to place for all things travel, beautiful and unusual gifts, jewelry, purses and extra special accessories you won't find anywhere else. I happened in here while picking up a library book from the performing arts branch of the NYPL because I was looking for a weekend travel bag. the place, which is much bigger than its storefront appears, seems family-owned, and the store attendants were attentive without being pushy, which usually scares me a bit in stores that sell this type of consumable. they had a huge selection of good-quality items, i picked up a few other things in addition to a zip suitcase, including a pair of earrings for a cousin. read more
