As I began to walk to the back of the store to look at the sale on the shoes, I noticed there was a worker that followed me all the way to the back but they were near the camping gear. When I noticed, she walked away. Before I went to the register, I looked at the pepper spray. The pepper spray is next to the register & the front door is about 7 feet away. As I was looking at the pepper spray there was 3 workers hovering around the register, watching me. When I turned around to pay for my items, 2 workers walked off and 1 stayed to ring me up. Pretty disappointed by my experience yesterday. I usually go here for athletic shoes but their service and inventory has gotten quite bad recently. Some kid was there with very little product knowledge basically directing me to dig for the shoe size I was looking for on the floor and then couldn't really explain the difference in quality. I asked somebody else for help but they directed me right back to him. I don't think I will return. I found what I was looking for at Macy's with much better service and inventory. read more

I come here for fishing stuff somewhat frequently. Definitely not the best selection on any given day, or the best prices. But the staff is nice, the stuff is very easy to find (2-row section at the front of store with middle displays, glass display with reels at the end of it, rods adorning the top of the rows), and typically it's not crowded. Staff is usually chillin unless you look lost, but they never hover or bug. If you're someone who likes really bubbly and enthused staff, you may be confused by the mood in there. That's a yp. I've worked a lot of retail and am a shy person in general, so your milage may vary. Never a bad interaction imo. I wanna piggyback on the selection part real quick: they tend to always have the basics (mono, fluoro, braid line, plastic lures, hooks, leaders, pre-rigged stuff, weights, floats/bobbers), but if you are someone who considers crankbaits, poppers, frog lures etc to be the basics, you are mistaken. I'm not always in that category as I switch between salt and freshwater. I believe I've seen all of those items here before (possibly not), but they get cleaned out of hot-ticket items somewhat frequently in my experience. Come here for hooks, line, spoons, dough-style bait, and soft plastic lures in a pinch. Ordering online at various retailers is always a better bet for selection and pricing, but you need to make a quick stop for essentials sometimes. If big5 is on the way, I don't sigh. It's great for that, and it's always quick and easy. UPDATE: crankbaits and jerk baits seem to be largely behind the counter, but not a great selection. I shop at all the Big 5 locations in the area. This location is the only location that has consistently provided me with a poor customer service experience "everytime" I come into the store. I have not truly felt welcome when shopping at this location. I was disappointed with the lack of customer service from the manager. My last two visits to this location were in January 2022. I don't know why this location has provided me me with such a poor experience while the other locations have consistently provided me with such a good if not great experience. read more

I think i spoke to the manager and she was hesitant to help us because the store was closing. I felt super bad for bugging them. Small storefront filled to the brim with sporting goods items. Cashier *never* greets customers, no matter who it is. Instead, in one instance, he stood and *glared* me as I browsed the items with my little nephew who dragged me there to look at the fishing gear. The cashier went so far as to come out from behind the register to pretend to put something on the shelf and watched us out of the corner of his eye instead of asking to assist us! It was very unpleasant and weird! Another associate also completely ignored us on another visit. However, she helped out a male customer who was purchasing fire arms at the counter! Luckily, on a third visit there was one helpful employee who walked over to assist us, however, he knew nothing about fishing equipment and referred us to the Alameda location where there is a knowledgable associate. I was in serious need of good quality running shoes. No, no! Of course I have absolutely no intention of going running! What kind of fool do you think I am?!? Still, I like to wear running shoes because they hold your foot well and minimize impact injuries when you're... errr... walking or, should it strike your fancy, running. So I bought these funky Nike Air filled with propane or diesel or vaporized kryptonite, for all I care. They have iPod sensors in there that can link to my iPod to serve as pedometer. Hell, should I ever have a heart attack, you can take off both my shoes and they will apply a strategic voltage charge that's very likely to resuscitate me because my shoes will have, over many years, monitored my heartbeat and have very intimate knowledge of how my heart chose to halt its normal operation. Pardon me, I digress... Big 5 Sporting Good has the most shitty service I've every seen. I basically had to grab an acne teenager, threaten him bodily harm, and he reluctantly agreed to fetch me my size 13 shoes. I then proceeded to the cashier, a task which took nearly an hour as the shopper ahead of me thought it would be wise to pay using pennies and she thought it might endear her to the other patrons patiently (NOT!) waiting in line. Anyway... $90 tax included but I god kickass shoes, so Big 5 gets 3 stars for selection. 'Nuff said. read more

They are a good store as long as u know what u want. They are pricey for most of there stuff. I bought some gym gloves from here they told me they not have them but i found them and wrist straps. Great and friendly service! I was approached calmly and professionally shortly after walking in, the staffer guided me effortlessly to my desired item. Again, as I browsed I greeted by Niko, who volunteered to help me find my desired items by checking other stores or ordering the items I was seeking. With his help I found what I looking for, and at a great price too! This store seemed to have a great stock and at what seemed very reasonable prices. Weird customer service and way more goods than the space can carry. Claustrophobic place with somewhat a good sale. Looks a lot like a discount clothing store like Marshalls but with less space. Not worth the hassle. I feel like service people there are not properly trained or managed. Register service attitude was as if I'm doing something wrong for buying things. The look I got when I came back to return something was bordering on hateful like in a jerk for making them work. There was an open discussion about lunch not being there soon enough. Store is way too small for the sheer volume of merchandise they carry. Gotta squeeze through most "aisles", more like areas but they do have a decent selection it seems of most sport good items. I go for disc golf gear and the few times I've shopped there, they've had a HUGE choice for me. I mean, picking up stellar gear seriously! Service is bad though. They don't have a good system in place for cashiers and floor staff to be separated. They just seem to walk around aimlessly at times and if you have someone in front of you in line, you will have to wait a bit. read more

Christmas shopping for the men in my life! Service: 6/5 I came in not knowing anything about fishing or hunting. I asked for some help and Megan was absolutely AMAZING! She helped me pick out an array of awesome fishing and hunting gifts, got a basket for me, checked prices for me, and went above and beyond by teaching me about fishing stuff too! Atmosphere: 4/5 The location was a bit messy, but being the last weekend before Christmas I'll give them a pass. I don't go into many sporting stores, but it seemed to have a large selection. I was going hiking today and stopped by at this store to pick up hiking poles. I asked one of the ladies at the counter where I could find them and was helped immediately. Then upon my request the girl at the counter took out a scissors and patiently cut all the plastic packing cords so that I could use the poles immediately without having to cut everything myself. Bonus points for providing a parking lot so that customers don't have to feed the parking vampires of walnut creek. Big 5 is not some fancy store but it does have low prices and in today's world, that is a much appreciated fact. Cheap is cheap for a reason, so I don't expect too many bells and whistles here. I went in to look at shoes and the older gentleman that works in the shoe department was helpful enough, but I had to listen to him complain to his coworker that the store is in a constant state of chaos. Came here to buy my father a BB gun for Christmas. I bought him the BB Gun, C02 cartridges, targets and the BB's. All recommended to me by someone who worked over the counter at the BB gun section. I don't shoot BB guns and I know nothing about them so she showed me what I needed to buy in order to make this gift work. During Christmas, after opening the gifts we decided to go test the gun out. I noticed that the BB's were not fitting in the gun correctly even though on the box it says they are the right caliber for the gun. I came back in the store to exchange my box of BB's for the right ones. Some other lady helped me out and wasn't the same one before. I explained to her my experience and she looked at me like I was an idiot. I know nothing about BB gun's and she said that I had bought the wrong BB's. I told her that one of her staff told me what to get. She was very irritated and annoyed. She even open the can of BB's up and thought that I took some and was trying to freeload. read more

There's a part of me that hopes this place will not fade away like Copeland's and Oshman's has over the last decade or so, and I hope they can withstand the new Dicks that's coming to Pleasant Hill. I actually do check out their weekly circular, because the one constant from here is their shoe selection. They may not have the newest Nikes, etc., but $50 or less should get you a decent pair of shoes, slightly more for running shoes. Maybe not heavy duty hikers or non slip work shoes, but something for everyday use. Apparel is reasonably priced also, there's just a lesser selection. I don't play as much softball as I used to but they have a few bats and cleats, and the same can be said for ski gear, some items just not an abundance. It's sort of like an outlet store without having to drive to one. This doesn't mean I won't still go to the specialty stores, but if you plan to come here just looking and not buy something, you just might be surprised when you find yourself making a purchase here, it's happened to me before. read more

I went to return an item that I bought in LA. The person from that store said there was no length in time I needed to return and item and that I could do it at any Big 5 store. I work out of town and was unable to return this cooler till a month later. Went here to finally do so. The blonde haired middle aged woman, smaller figure, super think eye liner, was helping an old gentleman ahead of me. Her name was Megan. She was peaches to him, being extra customer service friendly. She along with a few other workers saw me enter and no one said hello. Once I was being helped by here, she barely addressed me and looked at me. She looked at me with complete distrust when she asked me if I had used the cooler. It was obvious that I had not with the tags and stickers still in tact. No signs of wear. She gave me grief saying that the return policy was not what I was told. I just recited what I was told where as I would not have purchase do if I could not return it seeing as that I wasn't sure if I needed it or not. She said she would do it this one time. She kept on mentioning how long it's been and that it wasn't even purchased from the same store. Why are you giving me grief after you said you would return it. Mind you her attitude towards me was as if I was trying to pull a fast one on me. She asked me again if I had used the cooler. I said no, As I said no, she smiled in a snarky way as if she were thinking "yeah, right" and it was very rude. I was treated like a criminal here due to some previous employee not understanding the return policy. Big 5 does not have standardizations for their employee training. But this woman has got it go. The only reason to go here is because prices are very low, much less than Sportsmart, especially when there is a sale. Good Customer Service?, I don't believe that the management at this location has any idea of what that even means. What happened to the phrase "The Customer's Always Right!?" Today's visit was almost worthless . My boyfriend and I were told that if we came in we could get a copy of our receipt from an item we recently purchased. After we took the trip back to this location to receive our receipt we were rudely told by the manager that she "didn't have time for us" just because we didn't know the exact time of purchase, though we did have an idea of the time. To be fair, I know how time consuming it could be ( I too work in retail/customer service/and management and I deal with this sort of situation all the time) but I have never made a customer feel so unimportant or unappreciated. It would have been a completely different experience if she would have at least tried to find it but no, she instantly refused. After this cruel experience, my boyfriend and I decided to forget the receipt and walk out. We were both so shocked at the horrible service we had received that we decided to download yelp just to give this review. The only reason this location deserves the one star is because after we angrily left we generously decided to go back and check out the bb gun that we've been talking about for awhile. The lady working by fire arms was sweet and kind, totally opposite of what we had just experienced. Though we did give them our business once again because the convenience of where it is located at the time, this location will no longer be our first choice for sporting goods. They've got some sweet boxes of swiss 9mm ammo and Hungarian 7.62x39 but prices are higher than if you just ordered online for rifle, since the new moronic CA. pistol ammo law must be in effect by now.
