My 1-day deal: An oscillating fan for under $23!
Mark F.

During these COVID-19 times, this location has all the standard safety measures in place such as plastic barriers at the register and taped off benches in the shoe section to prevent customers from crowding too closely. This Big 5 is my go-to location for basic outdoor gear for camping and hiking. I often go here for good deals on shoes for myself and my kids as well. My patience is often rewarded in the form of emailed coupons and "Deal of the Day" notices offering steep discounts on everything from snow gear and hiking poles to oscillating fans and car dash cams. The only con with shopping here is that items often sell out quickly (especially sale items) and they do not keep a huge stock on hand (which is true for all Big 5 stores).

Tennis ball hopper

I rarely ever come to Big 5, but when I do it's usually for something specific that I can't find at a big box retail chain like Walmart or Target. I needed to buy a Wilson tennis ball hopper for my sister's Christmas gift and I got her a bag of Wilson tennis balls as well. I looked online at other stores to compare prices and to my surprise Big 5 had the best price. They were limited in stock at all locations except this one. I was able to walk in and found it right away. I also picked up a new pair of running shorts which is difficult to find in the size and fit I like. Checkout was easy and safe. They have plexi glass dividers at the checkout stand. All the staff members are wearing masks. The prices here can be over priced for some items I would do the research first before coming in to purchase just to make sure. The selection is also limited in shoes. I would check the inventory online so you don't waste a drive. For the items I needed to get I got a great deal.

Spencer helped out with my first time .22 long rifle purchase. He was friendly and knowledgeable and made it a painless process.

This lasted a few minutes until she went behind a door to continue her conversation for pretty much my entire time in store (over 40 minutes, and yes I could hear her laughing on the phone while I was walking out). There was only 2 other people in the store working, and maybe 3 other customers. The staff that were actually working were very helpful, and helped my wife find the shoe she was looking for. I wasen't going to write a review, but we came in on a separate visit trying to get a duffle, the Same Manager was actually on the sales floor (surprise) and we had asked her if she could bring us one down one so we could look at it. She was right next to them, and instead called a younger employee to grab it down with some big stick that was by the front door. Why were we made to wait??? Why couldn't you do it??? I've seen stores that were going out of business with more attentive management. I advise going to the other big 5's as this one has poor customer service starting from the top!

I was recently OW certified and would highly recommend anyone whose interested in scuba diving to…read morebe certified with Bill. His pricing is the same/similar as other local dive shops around San Diego, but his expertise and the individual time he spends with you is absolutely worth it. His classes are relatively small, so he can dedicate that needed time to you. (There was only one other person in my OW class besides me.) He does work around your schedule and is relatively easy to reach; I reached out to Bill to be certified before my Hawaii trip, and he was very flexible throughout the entire process. I'd say the only downside was not having a better fitting wetsuit (mostly because I'm short as hell and have larger quads than most people), but that definitely wasn't a show stopper and wasn't a big deal. He still reached out to a lot of his friends to see if they had any better fitting wetsuits I could borrow/have/buy which was very kind. I ended up renting a wetsuit for my last ocean dive which was a personal comfort choice. Nonetheless, he is incredibly patient and explains things very clearly and thoroughly. His number 1 priority is your safety and understanding, and he explains that from day one. He also wants you to have fun and enjoy diving. He's a great guide at La Jolla Shores and points out any sea life he sees. If you're new to scuba diving and/or are a bit clumsy/anxious like me, Bill focuses on your individual needs in becoming a competent and confident scuba diver. I'm sure you will not get the same attentiveness and care as you would in a crowded class at a dive shop. I'm definitely reaching out to Bill for any additional scuba trainings because I know I'll feel safe and comfortable after his instruction.

I appreciate his honesty and upfront clarification about how the class will run. He runs small classes; we were only 3 people in the class, which is a huge positive upside in scuba training. I took my OW and AOW certs with two different shops previously plus 100+ dive on my log; I know how to compare instructors, so I can confidently recommend Bill for any new divers or experienced divers who want to advance their skills.
