Big 5 Sporting Good has everything that you need. I enjoy their prices on their shoe, very reasonable. We have been to different Big 5 Sporting goods in different locations. This is our first time at this location in El Monte. We found out their closing this Big 5, and they need to sell everything. My dad likes to come here to help shop for their "exercise" equipments. However, we end up looking at camping and swimming gear which they had plenty. They also have lots of deals and items on sale which incentivizes us to buy it now! Staff is very helpful, we did a lot of checkout changes and I knew it was frustrating to keep rescanning everything but the staff was so friendly and nice about it, they calmly checked us out. Sometimes they have really good clearance deals as well on seasonal items that are out of season. They just don't have a restroom so when my son has to go to the restroom the only option close by was target! read more

This Big 5 has a huge parking lot since it used to share it with other establishments, however it's pretty isolated since those closed down. With it being next to a Planet Fitness, I was hoping it would be we stocked with gym attire and the like. Boy was I wrong. When you first step in, you will notice that there is a turn style gate. After that, you will notice that for a Big 5 Sporting good store, it's really small. I was looking for Gym Attire and I have got to say, it's limited like a bargain outlet store. I can probably count the number of article of clothings and also the under Armour that they stock is not the latest styles. Unless you're a big person, they're not gonna have your size, I'm talking Large and XL. I'm honestly surprised that this Big 5 has been in business this long. They do carry a variety of items, but not a lot of it. There wasn't much staff working at the time to help you out. They were all just at the cashiering place. read more

Like most Big 5 stores it has a lot of stuff in there, the one thing I like about it as I've been to Chicks, now called Dicks as they Merged rather than call themselves Chicks w Dicks I guess they decided just "Dicks' was more appropriate (I'm not making this up!). Anyhoo, Dicks is more apparel than sporting products. REI is good but the hiking poles are $99 for a pair. I needed two hiking poles for a long hike, had them on sale for $19.99 at Big 5. All is grand...till I got to the register. Slow cashier maybe having a bad day, lady in front of us had at least $1,000 worth of things in her cart, other lady in other lane was going over pricing. Every time I go to Big 5, same issue. I don't blame the customers there, but only 2 working registers? Hell I'll sell them another register through my Point of Sale supplier if they need one. read more

A long time ago, before WalMart had really caught-on in SoCal, and FedCo was still a viable option for buying everything you needed, Big5 was a great specialty sporting goods store. Prices were relatively cheap, and the casual angler, hunter, or camper could find just about anything required to facilitate outdoor adventures. As time marched on, Big 5 slowly morphed into what I've described as "a shoe store that sells guns." The fishing department is now a small aisle of cheap, mostly freshwater gear, and prices are not competitive. In contrast, half the store is shoes and workout clothes. Flashlights, ice chests, EZ-ups, and a few odds and ends representing pretty much every competitive sport are here... but not with any real variety or likely the size you need. Don't get me wrong-- when you need a cheap pop-up or a boogie board or a carton of .177 bb shot... it's worth checking the Big 5 mailer to see what's on sale. But in a world where Dick's, REI, WalMart, Harbor Freight, Turner's, and any number of specialty fishing and hunting stores offer better variety at competitive or cheaper prices-- not to mention Amazon, eBay, and hundreds of online retailers... Big 5 needs to figure out what they're good at, or they'll be joining Sports Chalet at the proverbial dive bar on an errant Tuesday. read more

This Big 5 store is on the verge of closing. I have been hearing this for some time now. I'm not sure why but I can only assume that it's because they don't generate enough business. I mean, pretty much all the other businesses in this shared lot have closed or are also really suffering. There used to be a huge Lowes store in the same lot but they have been closed for a long time now. There are a few other places that are opposite the front of this Big 5 store and those are doing well but those are also the ones that I see getting most of the business. The customer service here isn't the best. I mean, the people that I have seen towards the back of the store all seem miserable, bored, and like they don't care too much about anything. I know that they aren't real eager to help customers. I feel like there are a number of families that visit this store to come and steal fishing items. I mean, they are small and they are pricey. I guess they just don't care about taking the risk. The ONE and ONLY person at this store who does their job and does it well is a lady named Angela. She is SO helpful. She knows the stock of the store. She knows what is and isn't available. She isn't afraid to go and double check on things. She takes care of the customers from the beginning of their shopping experience to the end. I could not have been more happy with my shopping experience when she was the one who helped me. That's actually why I'd come back here. I was really hoping for that same experience. The few trips afterwards it was completely opposite. I hope this store steps it up before there are more reasons to close up shop. read more

09/02/2016 Came here specifically for a few items this time. This Big 5 has been here what seems forever. Instead of going to the mall looking for Footlocker and whatever sporting goods store, this was the place to go to for different equipment and supplies. I have bought a lot of stuff over the years and I'm sure it is from this location or one of the other stores. I probably got my first pair of rollerblades here and some gloves for those baseball games at the park. The last thing I bought here that will now know about is because I'm telling you what I bought. This new proposition 63 that is making you register for ammo purchases, you have another thing coming. I'm wondering if the government is really making you register your ammo purchase is because their paperwork is not in order. Do you not know what sort of weapons each person has? Do I also have to register the clays I purchased for target practice? Just because you get to be members of some shooting club and some blue collar guy launches these things when you say, "pull", doesn't mean I can't do the same thing on a spot of land I choose. When I asked about looking if they had different sizes, I was told to ask the front desk. So I did. When I asked, all she told me was whatever was out was the only thing available. When I asked how long before the website reflects that they don't have them the heavier set girl WHO WAS MORE FOCUSED ON THE DODGER GAME... said "I don't know we don't have control over that" with some attitude. I've been calling multiple stores to find some 12G lead free shotgun shells and every other store was able to answer their phones and tell me what inventory they have....I've called this store a good 10 times over the course of 2 hours and not a single time have I had my call answered. I just called this store in few minutes ago and their customer service gave me a really bad experience because they just asked me what I was looking for and they keep transferring my call to other phone line without responding back, and after that the following staff just asked me again the same question and after she got the answer, the staff transferred to an other staff so they can have an other chance to ask me again. I strongly believe that the routine they work is an inappropriate to be called "service". I hope that they will know to respect their customers. I recently made a purchase here, Walter was the one who handled it for me. Once I got home, I had a number of questions and concerns. By the time I had called Big 5, I had let my concern grow. Walter was very quick to provide the needed answers. He even contacted the head office to clarify and confirm, he called me back right away to answer all my questions and clear up any of my confusion and concerns. Don't understand the low rating for this location but I had a good experience here. I have been to this location only once before and that was a few years ago but the other day I went there to buy a rifle sight which is a Red, Blue, Green Dot sight by Trinity. I originally saw this one sight in the Alhambra store about a week earlier and decided to wait and think about it. I then decided to get it and by then Alhambra was out as was Monterey Park. According to the Big 5 website the Elmo store had it in stock so I went there. The employee who helped me was very friendly and helpful. I noticed his badge said Alex. He also was very knowledgeable. The girl who helped checking out at the register was nice and pleasant too. I try to spend my money in the Monterey Park store to support local stores but at times I buy in Alhambra, fairly local too. But in this case I had to go to Elmo for my rifle sight. My experience was good. I would shop there again if I am out in that area but I am more likely to shop at MP or Alhambra to support stores in my city or an adjacent city. But overall the store is nice as is the staff. read more

He saw that I was pregnant and immediately helped me by taking the weights from me and walking them to the cash register. After I paid he kindly offered to take the weights to my car. Good sales for okay products. They're not going to have the most fashionable pieces or up to date styles. Their selection is also limited. They had Nike running shoes on sale Black Friday for suuuch a good price. However, when talking to the staff, I could tell they are not knowledgeable at all about the gear! They sell deadstock and out of season stuff, which makes the prices competitive compared to Sports Chalet and other sporting good stores. Recommended for those who aren't picky hypebeasts. I called the El Monte Big 5 about twenty minutes ago after a terrible experience at the Studio City Store. I spoke to two different people on the phone. I was looking to buy a specific glove that I needed this week. I specified the series, size, and that it was for a left hand, right hand thrower. They put me on hold for a couple minutes. They checked in and asked me just to be sure that I needed a right hand thrower glove. The employee asked, "so they write with their left?". Just to be clear (which was great!). She understood my explanation and had another employee find it for me. I spoke with the employee and he was extremely helpful! He asked me questions to make sure it was the one I needed. I was concerned about the drive because I live pretty far from this location. He put me hold and found a way to get it to a store closer to where I live! Way to go out of your way to help a customer out! He ended the conversation by saying, "I hope it works out! good luck!". He was helpful, knowledgable about baseball gloves, and was generally really nice! I recommend calling/visiting the Big 5 in El Monte because they know their stuff! read more

I only shop for shoes running shoes here. Can only review them based on that. The staff is pretty knowledgeable about which shoes are better for running and which are better for training. They are also very honest. (They told me nike sucks at making running shoes, but I already knew that) Today in particular I asked to try on about 7 different pairs of shoes and the guy and girl who helped me were in a happy mood to look for my shoes. The store is very organized aside from the mess I saw people leaving. The manager is usually there and can help with anything they employees cant assist you with. This store is not as big as other ones but they have the main stuff you look for in a big 5 anyway. Absolutely the worst customer service imaginable. I called early 4th of July morning to check if an item was in stock. (Noise blocking headphones for babies) I spoke with Jacob, he checked. He said he had a few in stock but would place a pair on hold with the cashier for me to pick up. I arrived at the store to find out that my headphones were not there but were sold to a prior customer! None of the available employees could provide an explanation. I've been coming to this Big 5 since I was a little kid growing up in El Monte. I shopped here with allowance money for baseball gloves, shoes, hiking gear, swimming accessories, tennis rackets, etc. While I don't recommend wearing their running shoes for actual running, I'm sure they're okay for walking. Today, I go back to buy sunglasses and the occasional can of tennis balls. Recently I got a pair of photochromatic - polarized sunglasses for cycling for only thirty bucks. They were the last pair so the kind employees gave me 10% off. I like this place even though I'm now a pro-cyclist, pro-tennis player and pro-bargain hunter. read more

I wasn't greeted on the way in and left by the counter for a purchase for over 5 minutes while two employees could be heard behind the glass clearly being able to see me waiting joking away about personal gross stories. I was upset and decided to tell them to hold my item while I walked around to cool off and when I came back they had sold my item (last item available) that was placed aside for me not even on display to another person.
