DO NOT BUY A HUNTING LICENSE HERE!!!! I've been a loyal BIG 5 customer for years and after this last time here I will never step foot inside one again. The people who work here don't know what they're selling and even the managers are clueless. I went in to buy a hunting license and the manager tells me I need a certain one to hunt that type of foul. I purchase it for around $70 and the next day while I'm hunting I get a ticket from Fish & Game for almost $700 for having the wrong hunting license. The game warden tells me he's not surprised because BIG 5 usually sells the wrong ones to people. I call BIG 5 the next day and talk to the manager who sold me the wrong one and she could care less. She said 'well I thought that was the right one'. She offered no apology or anything. This whole situation is awful and has left a bad taste in my mouth. I will never shop here again or at any other locations! They should stop selling hunting licenses if they can't teach their staff how to correctly sell them. If you value your time and money then I recommend shopping elsewhere! read more

As I walked out, I thought, here's a store that doesn't want customers. When I walked in, a pleasant man greeted me and pointed me to the section I was interested in. However, once there, I was on my own. I finally asked Gavin, a guy who was stocking a shelf, if he would call someone to assist me. I figured he had seen me standing there the whole time and if he had been able to help me, he would have done so long before. But now he said he would help me.........................when he felt like it, apparently. It took some time for him to amble over. I asked him about the type & size shoe I wanted. By time he came over, the first guy had also come by. They both left to find the shoe I had asked about. When Gavin returned, he handed me a box and walked away. Really? There was only one shoe in the whole store for me to chose from? I tried it on and then asked Gavin if there were other choices. Apparently none had leaped out from a shelf and jumped into his arms, so no, he didn't, but oh wait, there's another but it's in black. I had never specified a color so I didn't see a problem with that. Again he disappeared and when he reappeared, he again handed me the shoe and walked away. I stopped him to ask if the first shoe was made of leather. He felt it, said it could be, that he didn't know, and, totally disinterested, he walked away. It was so clear he would help me slightly, but all the time try not to help as much as he could. It appeared that the only people in the store at that time besides three employees, was me. Three employees and one customer, and no one who wanted to assist the customer. I brought the shoes. I asked the cashier a general question about the clothes they sold. He gave me his best guess. I'm assuming no one working there knew as surely he would have asked since he wasn't sure himself. He didn't care enough to try to give me an accurate answer. When I mentioned that the service in the store was really lacking, he said he was sorry, in the most insincere tone. I can see by the other reviews that this is the way this store has operated for years. It's the way I remember it from my last visit a long time ago. My sisters and I came in for Big 5's Winter 2010 clearance sale. My sister found a board that she bought the day before at another Big 5, except a better fit. Keylin, the manager, allowed us to exchange the snowboard even though it had been unwrapped and bindings were mounted. He also helped us bring boots and bindings down from the top shelf at least four times without getting impatient. Wow, what wonderful customer service. I had a few things to buy which I had looked for last night at another store, could not find so this morning I headed out to Dublin to Big 5. I walked in, the woman asked if I needed help, she found what I needed which were like four items and help me get the best prices and then the cashier was really sweet too. Just a great experience. I'm leaving a 1 star reviews for big 5 sporting goods stores due to the corporate policy for not helping a customer who is stuck with a product that's not working but purchased driving back and forth 3 times and the corporate won't even help a customer with a simple refund due to their policy. Purchased a case of crossman co2 gas cartridges and 500 pellets. Inserted co2 cartridge into my barely used, used 8 of co2 cartridges in its life time which is fairly new, a crossman brand air pellet gun which was purchased at Big 5 sports good store a few years ago. A brand new crossman 5 of co2 cartridges and one cartridge came empty while the others were good and full. I tested the gun and the gun was working but I was not happy at the fact that one of the co2 cartridges came empty. But the store employee said they don't take used co2 cartridges but I told the employee that one of the cartridges were already empty before I got to use it. So the emoyee exchanged the whole case for me to a different brand, Daisy which I requested to avoid another defect or an empty co2 cartridge. As soon as I tried the first Daisy branded co2 cartridge, the gas started to leak. So, I took the cartridges back again and they were blaming the broken gun this time. As they tested out all the co2 that I purchased, they tested the gun with another co2 cartridge and the gas started to leak too. I was frustrated due to the fact that I was not able to use the 5 co2 cartridges but I came back home with 5 empty co2 cartridges which was paid for but used all 5 co2 cartridges to test at the store. So, I'm a customer who purchased co2 cartridges but the store emptied them out for me to test the gun out. Now, I'm stuck with a broken gun, all empty co2 cartridges due to testing at the store and 500 nonrefundable pellets. Called the corporate to see if I can at least get a refund on a $7 pellets that I'm stuck with. But the answer was a big "NO". So, I never got to use any of the 5 co2 cartridges but tested to empty at the store and I'm stuck with 500 pellets just because I wanted to test it out once. I think I need a refund for the pellets and the co2 cartridges that was never used by me. I'm leaving a 1 star review due to the corporate policy. read more

The gal that assisted me in the firearms section was sharp! Very nice and helpful. She made the painful paper work for buying a gun a little easier. Not pushy or tried to sell me anything else. Bought a new GSG-522 while it was on sale. After the 10 day wait, it was an easy pickup. I will return for future purchases. read more

We came here to get a basketball and see other things this place had to offer. Though the prices were pretty cheap, the amount of stock they had on hand kind of sucked. There were few choices on the walls. This is probably the smallest sporting good store I have ever been to in my life. There was little to no customer service and the cashier that rang us out was really bi%chy. She rang us out then when we wanted to exchange the item for a larger ball right after paying cash for it (we realized we grabbed a medium ball instead of a large), she came back with a snoody attitude and said "as you can see i'm now closed and she'll have to ring you out on the other side. " The parking was no problem in the shopping center though and I probably will never come back unless I am in a rush to buy some sporting goods since it's the closest one to my home. read more

I can only write this review because after I visited this store, I visited the Livermore store and had a total polar experience. I went to buy adult rollerblades. Upon entering the store, the idle cashier looked me dead in the eye, watched me walk past the registers and didn't bother welcoming me or speaking. For some reason, that's important to me. Next, the representative went to one area of all the boxes of skates, handed me two boxes and told me that those two were the only skates for my gender, in my size. Neither pair fit. I then began scanning the selection myself (the boxes were all stacked really high where you needed a ladder to reach). Almost immediately I spotted another box for my gender and my size. I asked to see it. The rep said, "Oh, I didn't know that was there." How would you know when you didn't look. Okay, so that pair didn't fit. I scanned the boxes again, and BINGO, there goes another box. However, by this time, the representative had gone, and never came back. I dragged the ladder over, by myself, climbed up, and located my box. While on the ladder, two other representatives saw me, and didn't bother to stop me, or offer help. You'd think that was a liability for them...for normal folks it would have been. So anyway, I hit the jackpot. The perfect skate. Cute and comfy! The only problem was that the white opaque wheels were lined in dirt. I flipped the skate over to check out the brake, and just as I expected, it was ground down on one side. I asked the representative, "Were these returned? Look how dirty the wheels are." His response: "Probably." Oooookay. Wow. My next question, "How much are they?" His response: "75.99" Hmmmm. Really. Full price for some dirty ass run down skates. Needless to say, I got out of there. I head over to the Livermore store where I was greeted immediately upon entering the store. The sales representatives were so helpful, and I found a great pair of skates. Kudos to you, Livermore! Thanks for giving me what I needed. Wow ... went in today to ask about a Mossberg shotgun that was advertised in their ad. Guy greets me at the gun counter and tells me they have "this one" (something similar) but not the specific one I was looking for. No problem, so I asked if I could order it, and he told me, I quote "It takes weeks or months to order .. and I don't have a way to look up part numbers ... so you're better off going to the manufacturer or somewhere else" Are you kidding me ? Surprised by that response I said, 'so you don't want my money?' and he replied "I'm sorry" If that's true that the company cannot handle order requests for out of stock items, then don't send out advertisements. He never asked the specific model I wanted, so it wasn't a case of it being out of stock corporate wide (and again it was just advertised). My opinion is the guy (short, asian, spiked up hair) didn't want to bother with it ... Awesome customer service guys ... glad your business is so booming that you just don't have to bother ... must be nice. Took my cash up to J & R in Livermore and they went out of their way to help. read more

Horrible customer service!!! I went to the store to buy thermal shirts. As I was leaving I saw youth cleats on the wall , quickly decided I wanted them for my daughter. I went to the register to ask an employee to grab a set for me. A different employee walked right past me ,an older gentleman ,white hair as if I wasn't even there. He started to go about his business a customer walked into the door right before I could ask him for help he help that customer and then I proceeded to ask for help about the cleats. The employee asked me to wait by the cleats so we can open up a dressing room. Once the employee made it to the shoe department, he helped out another customer before acknowledging me. I decided to wait and not interrupt ,the customer asked the employee to check for shoe sizes, employee started to walk away so I interrupted and asked him if you could check for a size for my daughters cleats. The employee replied I'm going to help this customer first. With that response I decided to return the thermals that I was going to buy and not buy the cleats as well. I have made frequent trips to this sporting goods store. I am a bargain hunter and more often then not, the prices at Big 5 beats all others. I went to Sports Basement which their cheapest trail running shoes were 70 dollars. Big 5 their cheapest is 25.00. You do have to bear in mind the lower the price the smaller the window of time to purchase, so when I did make I purchase I wound up spending double but that was fine because it was still cheaper then other places I have shopped. Got my daughter a good pair of running shoes as well as the children section was good. The customer service on my last visit was outstanding as there was always someone there to help and make sure I was helped. read more

I do most of my shopping online, I originally went to Livermore big 5 what a mistake even my mom disliked how the employees treated the customers she walked out. Since I really wanted some of the items I saw online and were in-store only so I did that search and it showed the items available at the Dublin big 5. I decided to make the drive and see. sadly the Livermore location left a bad feeling for my mom and she refused to go with me this time. The service was great the people very helpful. they all were a great help since I wondered around and basically asked a question from someone new each time. After I left and got home my mom claimed my new hat, so I went online to get another one different from the first one and again found a cute one at big 5 limited supply instore only Livermore and Dublin had in stock. When I called Livermore the manager said he would not look for the item it was in the back, surprised I asked again so you won't look he said no again. I called Dublin store its like night and day. The Dublin manager basically said we have 2 and I asked for one to be held no fuss just a quick yes. read more

Normally when I come in this store is always someone eager to give me a hand. But this Friday night when coming in to purchase a $90 pair of Nike shoes that are on the shelf on the wall with an advertised sale on it for $70 and taken back by a very young associate he states he just got off of break and having a really hard day. I am perplexed when I handed him the red Nike Flex sneakers that I'm interested in and gave him my side and he came back from the back room with four pairs of shoes that were not the same as what I sent him back there with. If I were to check my expenses at Big 5 Sporting Goods over the last three children that I own and operate I can't remember a single time that I would have ever been told or shown something other than what I had asked for read more

After driving around to countless sporting goods stores I finally found what I was looking for at Big 5! Although the layout of their store is smaller and less attractive compared to Sports Authority or Sport Chalet, you are guaranteed great customer service here.. I was completely ignored and not even acknowledged when I went to their competitors' stores but received a warm and welcome greeting as soon as I stepped foot into Big 5.. I figured the bigger stores would have everything I could possibly need to fulfill my exercise needs but that was far from the truth.. Even the associates had no clue what I was talking about but the guys at Big 5 found what I needed within 10 seconds and even helped me inflate it! I came to the store last week, thinking it was going to be just like the one in san ramon but when I got there I was greeted very kindly, started to look around at the shoes and I received great customer service from a guy named Josh he was all over the place helping others and still made time to come help find the right pair of boots I needed for work. I bought a watch for my husband on fathers day not real expensive but nice it stopped keeping the best time looked for my receipt and found it. Went in and saw the manager he explained I need to send back to the manufacturer but was just really rude he had the same watch there but commented on the quality. They told me it was a great time piece when I bought it but basically said it was bad when I tried to return it. I would not by a watch there again. read more
