Granted its been a few months since I shopped here. But what happen to the staff? They used to have the best employee's and always willing to help you. Today not the case, 3 staff members were at the front asked if I need help. I said yes and told them what I was looking for and they all pointed toward the back. I went to the back and the item was not to be found, I searched all around, while another employee stood there. Matt then walked up, which I thought to help. The service at this Big 5 in Campbell is hit or miss, meaning that it can be good here and there but other times it isn't. Normally, I don't stop in the store unless I really need something. It has the usual assortment of sporting goods that any other similar retailer should have. So I need a new pair of running shoes and since my son also wanted a new pair of skater shoes, I came to our neighborhood Big 5. Now mind you, I live about 2 blocks away and actually frequent this particular store due to my 16 year old's never ending need for new shoes. So, I walk in after a bit of shopping at Nob Hill and an appointment at EWC, and am greeted by a really sweet female cashier. I go to the shoe section and find a pair of my son's usual skater shoes and begin to check out the running shoes. The whole time there are not 1 but 2 guys working in the shoe department. Now I'm the only customer there as of this time, so of course I'm expecting some level of customer service. Ummmm... No greeting. No eye contact. No anything. Total avoidance is what I received. Now, I don't think I'm at all intimidating at 5'2. But perhaps I'm wrong. As I continue to stand and test the flexibility of the shoes an elderly woman of another persuasion comes and begins to look at the shoes next to me...so please tell me why both of the sales associates greet her and ask if they can be of assistance!! Really now?!? I know for a fact that I don't look to be impoverished, nor do I look as if I am just a window shopper. So, what gives? Anyway the younger of the two assists her, while the balding gentleman continues to straighten the shoe display on the wall( mind you they were already straight). So I take it upon myself to greet him and ever so kindly ask him to retrieve 3 pairs of shoes from the back. He does so with a sigh. Whatever!!! I did what I swore I'd never do- I shopped on Black Friday! Totoally worth it though... the very last pair of black UGGish boots in any size but super Amazonian? Now carefully stowed in my closet for an absolute steal : ) The place is kind of overwhelming when you first walk in. Just looks like a bunch of stuff everywhere. I usually don't bother myself to do the comment online except some really bad experience. I like Big 5 since they have good price but this branch has terrible customer service. One of the female manager was so rude, that I can't image she is a assistant manager. When she helped me in the cashier desk, she acted like she hated her job so much that she was angry about giving any service. Her attitude is cold and has a "you owe me money" face expression. I was thinking 'OK, she might have a bad day' . But then I was asking her to pass me one of inline skates to take a picture of the model behind the cashier desk. She crouched down and started organizing one of the skates which is not the one I was asking for. So I kindly remind her that I need the other pair. Then she yelled with calm voice: "I know !" and continued organizing. After she done with organizing that pair, she reached out the pair I was asking for. There are many Big 5 branches around. I went to Big 5 after going to a other "sporting supply" business near by, looking for some ammunition. I thought I could just walk in and buy it, but apparently I am quite out of date. The rules have changed significantly, and Paul was most informative and helpful in bringing me up to speed on the new gun and ammo laws. He patiently explained the process by which I could achieve my goal of purchasing ammunition, and guided me through the process. While I was unable to complete my purchase, Paul made my visit to Big 5 much more pleasant than the other place. He actually turned my attitude around by just being patient, pleasant and helpful. I will continue to use this store, supporting a local business who appreciates their customers and offers good service. read more

This place royally sucked! I walk in to buy shoes for my kids and I, when we walked in no hello greetings or anything of that nature. OH yeah and there were two employees at the entrance. My wife an I walk around a bit and I look at the shoes but no one around to assist. So I go to the front and ask the young lady if someone could help me with the shoes? she said what shoes? I stated the ones that are on the wall. She used the intercom to call for assistance, that never arrived. She did not follow up or anything. I just had a very positive shopping experience at this Campbell Big 5 store! I go to the nearby gym so am in here frequently to shop for and buy shoes for the gym and also for walking. There are always good sales and a big selection and sometimes good coupons too. There were a few sales guys available at the time I went so very easy to get help. They were all helpful but the one with red hair (sorry-didn't look for name tag) assisted me the most and I really appreciated it. I was shocked to see on their floor measuring scale that my feet grew-yikes! It was also helpful since you could see men's & women's feet & sizes and I actually bought men's shoes. That was a good suggestion by the employees to measure and figure a size that way. There were several options of comfy, sale shoes to buy-hard to decide! Previously I've shopped here and there's a salesman who is very friendly , funny & knowledgeable and remembers repeat customers. I 100 % recommend this Big 5 for shoes-great sales, selections and very helpful staff!!! read more

This is a smaller Big 5, but I kind of like that because it's easier to get in and out quickly and is still has everything I need! I came in to buy hiking boots and there was enough selection and the workers were really nice and helpful. They were able to give advice on different types of hiking boots and the benefits of each. Upon checkout, I was next in line with one other person behind me and they were nice enough to open another cash register for me! read more

Big 5 has all the usual stuff a sporting goods store should have. Today I stopped by to pick up some paper bb's. I use them in my bb handgun to shoot targets. Zero stars. Came in looking for a sleeping bag for camping and were greeted ok hello. Never have I ever been followed by all the same workers. Especially this tall white dude. About his early 30s I'd say. Everywhere I went in the store I had that dude next to me as if I was going to steal. I've been there several times. Never had this happen to me. Hmm, I'm bit perplexed by the really bad reviews with respect to customer service. Maybe management has cleaned up since the bad reviews? Nonetheless, I've been here on multiple occasions being the gym rat that I am and am in the process of turning my garage into a home gym. I've bought rubber mats, dumbbells and other things in the past. There was one time in which I didn't have the receipt for a return but the items were not opened and they had no problem with me exchanging it. To the people who are complaining on returning opened items. Well, it must suck even if it's only been a day or two but most retail stores in general will not make an exception on opened products. That's just the way it goes. Big 5 has always had good prices and they often mail me discount coupons (ex: 10% off, 5 bucks off orders more than 50 etc). Can't beat that. read more

I walked in to the store and his man wanted to look at a firearm. He asked the worker behind the handgun case to see one. The worker then said "oh it's my first day here ask someone else." If it's your first day there then why are you in the gun section! Poor management. read more

I bought my son a .22lr rifle here for his birthday. The manager was fairly well educated on guns, the buying process, and everything involved. It was relatively simple of a process. However the front staff could be trained better on how to deal with pickups and purchasing firearms. read more

Just had a negative experience at the Big 5 Sporting Goods in Campbell. The employees were more interested in chatting amongst themselves then in assisting the very few (2) customers in the store. The one time someone past by and answered a question incorrectly, before she kept moving... was disappointing. Taking one minute to assist would have resulted in a sale. Was in the area and needed to replace my nike duffle bag. While in the store I was overlooking the shoe section when I observed an employee continuously disrespecting another employee who was actually working and trying to clean up the area. He just kept trying to instigate and pry at the employee clean up/work on the shoe area. The shit talking employee was not doing shit pushing his way in front of the other employee to help customers. It was like watching a bad episode of high school bullying. The shit talker looked like a low self esteem meth head. Avoid this store, if they can't take care of their own employees what makes you think they can take care of you, trust me they won't. Horrible experience and wont be back...ever. Plenty of better places to buy things with non bullying work/customer environments. read more

Was seriously unimpressed with the customer service from both employees working around 2pm on Monday 9/11/17 (pretty sure one of them was a manager) My girlfriend and I came in to return two fold-up chairs she had purchased the day prior, both of which were unusable and should never had been for sale in the first place (poles were snapped and sand was in one of the bags). During the exchange both employees said very little, were completely unsympathetic, and had a generally bad attitude... kind of like they just got word the the store is being closed (very surprised it hasn't yet). Now, I'm sympathetic to the fact that no one is perfect and maybe they were both having a bad day, but I live in the area and have been coming to this store for years, and the "vibe" has been generally shitty every time I've come in so I finally had to write a review about it. I went in looking for pink soccer cleats, they didn't have any but I found the cutest pink Nike Shin guards and Pink Adidas socks. Then after shopping around everywhere, Big 5 was the last store in my list and found everything needed exempt my shoes. David and Eddie helped me out. They are the reason I'm giving them 5 stars! I have never been a fan of this chain, but in a pinch to get a pair of basic work shoes, I gave it a shot, anyway. A manager (?)notuced me after 15 minutes, and I told him what I wanted. He seemed to dismiss what I said and pointed towards some sale items. i asked him if there were other wide suzes, . I told him I wanted a try a few pairs, and he brought me one pair and disappeared, after saying that what sizes they had were on the shelf; In retail ljargon, that means you are on your own. . There were no sales people on the floor. I. gave up looking around for sales help and headed for the door . I found 3 employees: all at the front register, one sitting down immobile, and the manager happily chatting witg customers, and the third was chatting with a customer. Again, there were. no workers helping customers on the floor, and the rest could not be interrupted. I recalled why I was never a fan: service stunks. read more

Not a very good selection of anything but I guess these stores are more for convenience. Most of the store is filled with sale racks of clothes- sports wear, swimsuits, etc. Prices are generally high except for the sales items. They have a ad in the newspaper every Sunday. read more

My kids just started basketball camp this week and we needed a new ball for the backyard hoop. Admittedly, I usually buy online, but was in the plaza for other shopping needs so decided to drop in. The store manager Austin was extremely patient and helpful, dude is very knowledgeable, and we spent several minutes discussing the best basketball option for my kids. I was there this weekend to try to buy some free weights since I'm all ripped and shit. 3 employees were in a circle chatting including the manager. They looked pretty damn disappointed that I interrupted them and asked where the weights were. The problem is the other Big 5 on Steven's Creek is the same shit. I would shop the smaller stores over the big chains and shopping mall shops any day BUT when they don't carry the simplest of items, it's hard to justify going to the "little guy." Case in point, I often stop and buy one or two items at Big Five such as a water volleyball or an indoor soccer ball. I have stopped at this particular store many times on my way home and each time I ask if they have any needles to blow up the balls with. Response (several times) has been: "Well, the computer says we have over 200 of them but we don't know where they are in the store. So because the computer says we have them, we can't order any more." What?!@ So what good does it do me to buy the ball if I can't pump it up?! read more

Management here is terrible!!! I went there yesterday to buy 2 fishing licenses and a ton of bait/lures. When I tried to buy my licenses I told the girl at the counter that I needed to buy one for my GF too. Since I only had my ID I asked her if she could call a mgr. to see if they could just look her up based on name and DL#. He came over promptly and was quick to tell me that "it's all electronic now and we need I'd." BTW, complete BS! I told him he was wrong and he could manually enter the info, and he said he couldn't. He was a complete D!(K and very unproffesional! Anyways, if you're looking for fishing licenses or anything related, head to Walmart! Also, Walmart had no problem manually entering the ID# to get the licenses. read more

I gotta give a 5 star to my big 5. They got almost everything that you need. Today I went and bought some swimming equipment and speedos. Nice product. I used to be a big time swimmer and was on a swimming team. I bought these goggles. Today that were awesome. They didn't leak into my eyes or anything. I loved it. The swim shorts and tee shirt were speedos as well. They fit just perfect. Nice!!! I also bought a blowup jet ski for my little daughter and she got in the swimming pool for the first time and she was scared for about 5 minutes then she just loved it. I've been shopping at big 5 for over 20 years and tried other places. But for some reason I love Big 5!!! You get some weird managers and staffs. But who cares. Product and price matters. Asked a sales person if there were other colors available and he became rude and condescending, saying they are all the same and starting tossing bags towards me even though they weren't the right size. The store manager apologized for the others guys rudeness when I complained. So much for trying to support our local stores. I left without purchasing the bag. My girl friend and i went to this big 5 one day to get a pair of workout shoes, When we where Finlay getting help the shoes guy left us there and started helping someone else!!! unbelievable. This new guy ended up helping us finally and the manager didn't seem to care that we got left from his employee! also when we went to pay there was a girl at the front counter with a real snotty attitude and there was two other employees just standing there bouncing balls joking about something while we stood there because no one knew how to clear the register so we could pay to get out of this place. while we were waiting for the manager the girl at the front counter was wiping her nose with her fingers and sleeve. she was sick with a cold and touching are credit card and things we bought with snotty hands ...unbelievable once again the manager didn't care!!! while we where complaining to the manager again the employees bouncing the the balls and the the girl at the register were laughing at us...unbelievable. this is one of the worst managed big 5's i ever been to and will never go back and we have told allot of are friends never to go there. some of them had similar problems with this store in the past. very very bad management at this store ...stay away!!! read more
