Although a small family run business, the customer service has always been top notch, especially compared to many other online auction companies I've encountered. Their site provides the best pictures with detailed description of items compared to the majority of online auction sites. Mr Manger has always provided help without asking, quality customer service, and very fair resolutions, regularly that I've experienced, and observed his consistent friendly support to other customers as well.

Pickup was stated to be a couple weeks later. I call Thursday morning before pickup (pickup is on Saturday) no on answers I leave a message. No one returns my call so I call Saturday the morning of pickup and leave another message. I get a call back and they state the pickup day was two weeks prior however website was not updated. They inform me they don't know if they have my items that they will have to look for them. I reach back out today to follow up on my items and have to leave a message again. Wes Manger calls me back incredibly rude stating he can't drive but I can get them after the fourth. I kindly ask if I could come pickup the items where he begins to raise his voice and remind me he can't drive, asking me what world do I live in, etc. He then refused to let me get my items and said he was going to refund me. I do not recommend ANY business who berates their paying customers. Take your business elsewhere.

IAA was called to pick up my car, as the insurance rep assumed my car would be totaled. Turned out, it wasn't, after issues with insurance getting an estimator out, which took weeks, IAA was contacted to tow my car to my auto repair shop for repairs. When my car arrived, my passenger side mirror was hanging off, and all of my floor mats were missing, and I couldn't locate my license plates. When I called to inquire, I was met with a lady with an attitude on the other end, who was able to tell me they were under the seat (after telling me they don't remove the license plates). I called my insurance company to tell them about the mirror and floor mats, but I was told it would be too difficult to prove who was responsible, and basically wasn't worth making a claim. Fast forward about a year later, my car was involved in accident. Again, my insurance company called IAA to pick up the vehicle. And it took WEEKS for them to pick it up. They first said they would come the following day, and no one showed up. The weekend went by and I got a call that they were gonna pick it up that day, no one was home and I hadn't left the keys so I rescheduled for the following day. The person I spoke with couldn't give me a time but assured me it would be that day. The day came and went and my car remained in my driveway. We called IAA, and either got no answer or the run around. We called State Farm, they got the same response. Another week went by and we eventually got through to a manager after refusing to be transferred AGAIN. The manager looked in the system and acknowledged my car should've been picked up weeks ago. He assured us that the car would be picked up the next day... Again, the day went by and the car remained in the driveway. Finally 1-2 days later a driver called me and told me he was en tour to pick up my car. This time... it was the truth. This was such a hassle; because it took so long to pick the car up to be inspected, I maxed out the number of days I could keep my rental before being able to find a new vehicle, since it was deemed a total loss. IAA is VERY unprofessional.

My wife found Caring Transitions by googling on "Senior Downsizing." A couple of days later Ms Dani Washington, a stunningly resourceful young woman who is the proprietor, came by, surveyed our situation, said "We can handle this," and gave us an estimate. Within a very short time her crew arranged for an on-line auction of approximately 80% of our possessions, brought in contractors to empty out our attic, and remove the dilapidated shed in the back yard. Meanwhile, through her connections Ms Washington lined us up with an absolutely ace realtor (Sheilah Augustine, who got us an offer on our house less than two weeks after listing), found a moving company who could promise next-day delivery of our remaining possessions, arranged for the local Caring Transitions office at our destination to supervise the setting up the new apartment, and even arranged to have one of our two vehicles transported for us. Less that three months after we decided to make the move, we were all settled in and our house was sold. I should mention that while all of this was taking place, my wife had a major health crisis that required a several-week hospital stay, and all of society came to a screeching halt because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, Ms Washington and Caring Transitions carried on cheerfully and efficiently, handling every complication the moment it came up, so that for us this major life transition was made as painless and worry-free as it could possibly be. Many of us Boomers are having to do what we just did. For all who are facing the prospect of downsizing and relocating, I recommend Caring Transitions highly.

You'll be whistling the theme to The Andy Griffith Show as you meander thru downtown Main Street! Main Street is home to some lovely restaurants, local grocers, a great coffee shop, the historic train station, shops, Randolph-Macon College, and some gorgeous Victorian homes. The toy train shop is must when visiting this homey town. Also in the "downtown" area, you'll find several antique shops, a fabulous bakery and even a small movie theater! Be sure to go by the Ashland Farmers Market where vendors offer local vegetables, herbs and plants, honey, fruits, baked goods, dairy products, crafts and more! Nearby, closer to Rt. 1, it's more commercial with the chain grocers, gas stations, diners, James River Winery, hotels, department stores and other businesses. Entertaining the family is not a problem here! Ashland has a beautiful park located behind the Police Station off England St. This small, quiet park has a neighborhood feel with picnic tables, playgrounds, benches and even a skate park for skateboarders! (The Skateland roller skating rink is on Rt. 1 and has been around for decades and King's Dominion is just a hop, skip and a jump away from town!) While exploring Ashland, the visitors center in the old train station is invaluable for finding the historic spots in nearby. Scotchtown, Patrick Henry's Home is just 10 miles outside of town. The Ashland Museum will provide you with an overview of the town's history. The local library hosts numerous community events throughout the year. And the townspeople flock to the streets for the annual festivals held in Ashland as well, one of the most notable being Ashland Train Day which celebrates Ashland's love for trains! All aboard! I'm there! No wonder this town is nicknamed "Center of the Universe"... it makes you feel right at home!

If you are considering working with this business after the death of a loved one, please carefully…read moreconsider other options. I had a very difficult time with this business on a number of levels. I would never entrust them with anything again. Consider the amount of time you have to deal with your family home and the level of emotions you attach to family belongings. Don't make a quick decision if there is no need. Remember that businesses set up around death leverage your sentimentality. If a vendor is going to take ~half of what your possessions yield, you might be better off giving your items to family, donating to non-profits, or consigning. Do not believe anyone who pretends to be doing you a big favor; you're handing over valued possessions for far less than what they are worth; he wouldn't be doing the work if it didn't yield large profit. Look at the online history of different auctions the vendor has held. Really check out the details. Don't assume an estate sale person has a big reach amongst collectors; I actually ended up meeting a few people who purchased items from our estate sale and I was told that the people they routinely see at Gates sales are people who purchase for quick resale, including those who buy jewelry and sell it by the gram to "melters"; not collectors. They also told me that the home of a widowed woman who kept a nice home is a "dream" scenario for this business. We'd hope most things would go to people who would love them, and we definitely did not think that items would be removed from our home and sold without our permission. Toward the end of the auction timeline when not much had happened in the way of marketing or outreach from what I could tell, nor were the bids very high, I contacted Gates and he told me that only the last three hours of the online auction matter, so remember that. Protect yourself contractually, do not put up with a nebulous contract. Ask for exact start and end dates. Do not let the vendor know you are running out of time and would really like him to handle the job. Beyond the insulting percentage he will take from the proceeds, he might also add a staging fee late in the conversation. Have attorney review the contract prior to signing (obviously). Our sale dragged on and the owner and his employees had 3+ months access to our home. I was in on the West Coast and the neighbors and cameras kept me posted, Gates did not. I do not feel that the owner adhered to agreed upon start dates, and then we were stuck in the SIP situation. I did notice he got another gig during that time, so he prioritized that, but he should have let me know. Between the start of the agreement and the end date of the sale more than 3.5 months elapsed. I also feel that there was some disorganization on the part of the vendor; he listed the incorrect county for the online estate sale; probably causing some people not to bid. When Gates finally posted the items online he did not tell me; I found it via search. He had a number of items listed that I specifically asked him to exclude from the sale. My real estate agent and I also had several emails and texts go unanswered over the course of this time. When responding Gates was snide and rude, including sad attempts at condescending. He unnecessarily told me that one of the purchasers had thrown away some of my Mom's things when he brought the items home. When you've lost a parent you don't need that pettiness. Some items were inaccurately described; e.g, inaccurate artist name, some items were not added to the online auction. Crystal glasses were broken and he said "they were that way in the cabinet" which is highly unlikely given that everything was photographed for insurance purposes on the last day we were in the house and there were no broken glasses in our china cabinet. Other negatives: they allowed our verizon equipment to be taken by the person who purchased the tv. Gates brought in a number of broken down furniture items into our home without telling me first and put them in the auction (he used those items as leading items in the auction, and then listed a second time on the last page of items; in our opinion, working harder for the consignor's items than our own). When I asked the vendor about this he said that the consignor of those items was an attorney, which, I suppose was a clumsy attempt at intimidation. I was going to just try to forget this awful experience, but then I discovered that a woman who worked for Gates was selling some of our belongings on her social media (without my permission) prior to our estate sale and at 100% profit for herself. This is the worst vendor experience I have ever had; and definitely the worst business aspect of dealing with my Mother's estate. The level of disrespect was stunning to me. I have no doubt Gates will attempt to vilify me as he has with others who left poor reviews. Have at it. My documentation is solid.

Completely unorganized, unprofessional, and rude. I will never do business with this company again…read more I had a terrible experience with Gates Estates. I purchased a sofa from an estate sale that they ran, and hired the movers they recommended to move the sofa from Woodlake to my home in Henrico. When the movers dropped off the sofa we discovered that one of the cushions didn't fit the sofa and actually belonged to a matching chair (that I did not purchase). The movers said that an employee of Gates Estates had confirmed with them all the items that were loaded onto their truck. Since this was no fault of the movers, I had to drive from my home in Henrico to Woodlake in order to exchange the cushions (1 hour round trip). Upon arrival at the estate sale I received no apology (or thank you for returning the cushion). I asked for a refund of the bid premium (which was $29.06) in order to partially cover for their mistake which resulted in an hour missed from work and the cost of gas. Mr. Gates refused to admit his employee had made a mistake. He condescendingly offered $15 "out of his own pocket" to make things right. I think the full $29.06 refund was not unreasonable as he had still made over $200 on this sale. The money isn't even what I'm angry about--it is the principle of the matter. Mr. Gates should be able to own up to his mistakes and treat his customers with respect.
