Walking on campus daily was enjoyable. I had to be careful at crosswalks and to obey the traffic "walk" signals.

I have never taken a course at the University of Minnesota (UMN). I used to hang out in this area…read moremainly because I like Dinkytown, which is the heart of UMN student life. I like the stores and good eats in this neighbourhood. I've always felt comfortable visiting universities and checking out campuses. It's no different here. I had a friend who got his master and doctorate degrees from this university, so I got to hear about his experiences when we both lived in Minnesota. I am a hockey fan. The UMN has a decent hockey program, both men's and women's. You often see local talent make it to the Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Frost rosters, respectively. Alex Goligoski, who recently retired from the NHL, played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers at UMN before he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He won the Stanley Cup with this team, but spent his last three years with the Wild as a defenseman. During his 1,000th NHL game, he scored the game-winning goal, which was quite the storybook ending. As of late, Brock Faber is a solid defenseman on the Wild. He is starting his second full season with the team and was captain of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He is young, but exceptionally skilled and mature beyond his years. Taylor Heise, who is a forward for the PWHL's Minnesota Frost, played for the Minnesota women's hockey team. The Frost won the Walter Cup and she won the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP award. If I were looking into academics, UMN has both computer science and mathematics departments that would have appealed to me. It is similar to York University in that you can choose to do either a Bachelor of Arts or Science in either field. Only a Master of Science is available in both. You can also study towards a PhD in either domain. UMN has a Bachelor of Science in Technical Writing and Communication. Many universities start off offering Technical Writing degrees as an Arts degree. I like the shift with universities going with a Bachelor of Science. Technical writers are needed more than ever to explain technical, complex details as clearly and concisely in engineering, medical, and more. It's makes more sense that it's a Science degree. This university does not offer graduate degrees in Technical Writing. It's one reason why I didn't do my Master's here. I don't have any inclination to get a doctorate. If UMN offered one in my chosen field, I'd consider it if the price is affordable and I could do it remotely. It was nice being back in the area. (394)

The new vision for the institution is to be similar as walking through the streets of heaven. However, this could be further from the truth, as NCU has a vision of the "perfect christian". If you do not properly fit these specifications, you will be an outlier for a majority of your college experience. This is not how Christ depicts heaven to be upon reviewing the scriptures. Racism, homophobia, and religious manipulation are three issues that are common social issues & themes throughout the student body and chapel services. Many students, including myself, came to NCU eager to grow in their faith, yet after a year of observing the "God" and the meaning of "being a Christian", many student lose their faith. I am awarding two stars, because there are a few professors that stand out & invest in their students, regardless of whether they fit the NCU mold. However, these staff members are few. Education is mediocre. Rules are controlling. Regardless of the message NCU attempts to portray, they are simply a business looking to make money and will gladly take advantage of students who may be struggling.

I'm writing this review as an adult learner. So that may be a different perspective than someone…read morestill in high school looking at colleges. For an adult learner, they offer the "Augsburg for Adults" or AFA program. This program recognizes the needs of a busy adult with a full time job and a family and still allows you to complete a traditional 4 year bachelor's degree, at a real accredited college. Signing up as an adult, you are allowed to transfer in a lot of the credits you may have done at a prior college. If you started but never finished, or did a 2 year at a community college, or even a little bit of trade school (or for-profit schooling) you will have some of your credits transfer. Classes are offered every other weekend, in 4 hour long sessions. So the classroom time equals out to be the exact same as a regular daytime student in a traditional program.... you are just condensing it into bigger blocks, so you don't have to show up as often. Having class only twice a month works well for me as an adult. The cost is reasonable for a private college - though much higher than a community college. A traditional 4 credit class at Augsburg in the AFA program is around $1,700. They work with your employer if you have tuition reimbursement available. Also, this isn't really well known, but there is a regional student loan program out of North Dakota called the DEAL loan. This is probably one of the best private loans available out there. Luckily Minnesota students are eligible (only3 or 4 states are eligible). Look into that and into federal stafford loans if you need some financing. The instructors have generally been top notch professors, although I have had a couple stinkers. One was a tenured professor who was absolutely full of himself, and one was a grad student who was trying to make some money as a part time instructor. Both were terrible. Otherwise though I've been very pleased with the teaching talent at Augsburg. If you're an adult learner, I find that the AFA program is a really good fit and there is a lot of support for adult learners. The staff in this program are very supportive in making you feel like you get the whole college experience yet also have your unique needs as an adult student taken care of. It's been a great experience for me. I've got less than a year left to graduation with two degrees!

You're paying thousands of dollars to experience stress and anxiety.

I graduated from Hamline last year, so as an official recent alumni (it's still weird identifying…read morethat way) I can say that my time here taught me a lot. I still stand by my decision to attend Hamline and although the tuition is sky high, it was worth it. No college is perfect, but without the liberal arts education that Hamline provided to me, I would not be who I am today. I am more open, opinionated, and well informed about the world than I ever have been because of the courses, activities, and conversations I engaged in while at Hamline. Originally, I chose Hamline due to the size of the campus/classes as well as the physical layout of the campus. The year I came in, was the first year that the Anderson center was open. Naturally, everyone was delighted about this "bright and shiny" addition to campus. Lets get to the important stuff...the food. College food is what I always get questions about and here's the answer. The food lacked quality and variety at times, but I want y'all to know that Hamline gave me the best omelets I have ever had in my life. For lunch, I loved their spinach wraps. The Subway on campus is now a popular spot to eat as well (although I did prefer when it was the Bistro). The Piper Grill was a wonderful option to have for late night snackin'. I always indulged in their cheeseburgers, pasta, and chicken tenders. Carbs are the best for late night studying, that's for sure. The Anderson Center is not only used as the dining center, but it offers study and spaces to hold events as well. I have been to many events there and guests who are not affiliated with Hamline are always impressed by their surroundings when they attend events here. The service star is another appealing addition to campus. Although it seems like a discrete structure on campus, the meaning behind it is both important and sentimental. Along with the new, is the old. Hamline students will not hesitate to tell you that Hamline is the oldest institution in the state of Minnesota, and our buildings and photographs prove that. Buildings like Old Main, Manor Hall, and Drew Hall are reminders of a different era. Walking through campus, always made me appreciate the roots of the school and where we came from. As for little treasures I discovered along the way, there were plenty. I came to sunbathe in the Blue Garden, study on the third floor of the Law Library (that is the most quiet place you'll find to hit the books), and engage with an open ear to my counselor (who I met with for nearly the entire duration I was at Hamline) in the Health Services & Counseling office. For someone as social as I am, being able to say hi to people in passing was such a comforting feeling. Given Hamline's size, the sense of community and familiarity was abundant. Despite the rising cost of tuition and limited choices for majors and at times, classes, Hamline helped me grow into a part of my identity I would have never found otherwise. Every school has their flaws but trust me when I say that Hamline has its own character and was my home away from home. If I ever felt discouraged or overstressed, their were endless resources at my finger tips which is something I always appreciated about being a student there. With President Miller as the new leader, I am hopeful for even more positive changes for the future of Hamline and their students and staff. Below are a list of handy dandy recommendations/tips: 1. Become involved! There are so many organizations (people will refer to them as orgs) and work study positions on campus, so whether you want a paid position or just to meet new people, there's sure to be something to fulfill your interests! I was a Resident Advisor for one year and it taught me so much. 2. Studying abroad options at Hamline are limited. Unfortunately, if this is a priority for you during college, please become informed on what trips/courses abroad are available before you are set on enrolling here. I have heard many complaints from students about the lack of choices and I would suggest to look up information online or call them before making your decision. 3. Before spring break, look into all of the possibilities on where to go for that week! You can book a trip on your own of course, but there are several service learning trips you can apply for as well. STLF is very popular because you make stops to multiple cities, but I would personally recommend the Habitat for Humanity spring break trips. I enjoyed being able to help another community and get the chance to get away for a bit too! 4. Connect with your advisors. Hamline has so many amazing advisors and they will help you so much both pre- and post-graduation. They are great support systems and references! 5. Utilize the Career Development Center. They are very helpful and you can stop in anytime to make an appointment or see if one of the staff members is free to speak with you! 6. Take an ACTC course at a different campus if you can!
