This option can save you a ton of money if you are able to focus on school, are driven, goal-oriented, and are literally willing to work on assignments and write papers most of the day and night while you are attending. Luckily, I am this type of person. I literally loss a few lbs during my final semester, I only took short breaks to decompress, take my mind off of schoolwork and then I was back on my grind. I felt the instructors were generally really good, I had 2 bad apples out of approximately 10 instructors. I literally had two professors that were exceptional, provided great feedback and graded my papers in record time. I had a number of technial/IT issues trying to get assignments to load and had to call the school a few times to get help with that, which slowed me up a little bit. I cried a couple of times, just out of frustration. LOL But it was worth it. I got my Master's with no debt, knocked it out in record time and my laptop literally died 2-weeks later, probably from all of the papers that I wrote, don't get me started on the Capstone project... I am so glad I am done! My advice, keep telling yourself that time is money.. time is money, it will help you focus. Insider tip, professors in the online program don't grade papers on the weekends so if you submit your paper on Friday evening, you are literally losing two days. It's best to submit assignments early in the week to ensure timely grading, which contributes to how fast you move through the program. This program can work, but you must focus.

When I tried to pick up where I left off, an apathetic voice on the phone told me my program had been discontinued and I could either a). Start over with a different program, or b). Walk away. I spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars working toward my Ph.D. only to have them pull the rug out from under me when I was almost ready to graduate.

I have never taken a course at the University of Minnesota (UMN). I used to hang out in this area…read moremainly because I like Dinkytown, which is the heart of UMN student life. I like the stores and good eats in this neighbourhood. I've always felt comfortable visiting universities and checking out campuses. It's no different here. I had a friend who got his master and doctorate degrees from this university, so I got to hear about his experiences when we both lived in Minnesota. I am a hockey fan. The UMN has a decent hockey program, both men's and women's. You often see local talent make it to the Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Frost rosters, respectively. Alex Goligoski, who recently retired from the NHL, played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers at UMN before he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He won the Stanley Cup with this team, but spent his last three years with the Wild as a defenseman. During his 1,000th NHL game, he scored the game-winning goal, which was quite the storybook ending. As of late, Brock Faber is a solid defenseman on the Wild. He is starting his second full season with the team and was captain of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He is young, but exceptionally skilled and mature beyond his years. Taylor Heise, who is a forward for the PWHL's Minnesota Frost, played for the Minnesota women's hockey team. The Frost won the Walter Cup and she won the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP award. If I were looking into academics, UMN has both computer science and mathematics departments that would have appealed to me. It is similar to York University in that you can choose to do either a Bachelor of Arts or Science in either field. Only a Master of Science is available in both. You can also study towards a PhD in either domain. UMN has a Bachelor of Science in Technical Writing and Communication. Many universities start off offering Technical Writing degrees as an Arts degree. I like the shift with universities going with a Bachelor of Science. Technical writers are needed more than ever to explain technical, complex details as clearly and concisely in engineering, medical, and more. It's makes more sense that it's a Science degree. This university does not offer graduate degrees in Technical Writing. It's one reason why I didn't do my Master's here. I don't have any inclination to get a doctorate. If UMN offered one in my chosen field, I'd consider it if the price is affordable and I could do it remotely. It was nice being back in the area. (394)

University of Minnesota has 12 men's and 13 women's teams. We are particularly proud of the hockey team. They are really doing well this season. I'm recommending you get to a game if you are a fan of hockey. The program has a long history. This is a historic University.

They advertise wanting to support students, but every time I had shown up with a concern or issue, I was constantly dismissed and felt invalidated. For an adult learner, they offer the "Augsburg for Adults" or AFA program. This program recognizes the needs of a busy adult with a full time job and a family and still allows you to complete a traditional 4 year bachelor's degree, at a real accredited college. Signing up as an adult, you are allowed to transfer in a lot of the credits you may have done at a prior college. If you started but never finished, or did a 2 year at a community college, or even a little bit of trade school (or for-profit schooling) you will have some of your credits transfer. Classes are offered every other weekend, in 4 hour long sessions. So the classroom time equals out to be the exact same as a regular daytime student in a traditional program.... you are just condensing it into bigger blocks, so you don't have to show up as often. Having class only twice a month works well for me as an adult. The cost is reasonable for a private college - though much higher than a community college. A traditional 4 credit class at Augsburg in the AFA program is around $1,700. They work with your employer if you have tuition reimbursement available. Also, this isn't really well known, but there is a regional student loan program out of North Dakota called the DEAL loan. This is probably one of the best private loans available out there. Luckily Minnesota students are eligible (only3 or 4 states are eligible). Look into that and into federal stafford loans if you need some financing. The instructors have generally been top notch professors, although I have had a couple stinkers. One was a tenured professor who was absolutely full of himself, and one was a grad student who was trying to make some money as a part time instructor. Both were terrible. Otherwise though I've been very pleased with the teaching talent at Augsburg. If you're an adult learner, I find that the AFA program is a really good fit and there is a lot of support for adult learners. The staff in this program are very supportive in making you feel like you get the whole college experience yet also have your unique needs as an adult student taken care of. It's been a great experience for me. I've got less than a year left to graduation with two degrees!

My academic advisor/coach quit and was never replaced, and every time I called anyone, I was always told that there was nobody working in *whatever* department anymore, and to call back another time to try and connect. I have since gone to another online program that charges LESS, for the same program, and there are actual professors who lead the classes, answer questions, and grade my papers.
