I am having, without question, the worst higher education experience I have ever encountered.
I previously completed my master's degree through Walden University and had a positive experience with very little unnecessary stress. Unfortunately, my experience pursuing my doctorate through Capella University's FlexPath program has been the complete opposite.
To be clear, the academic coursework itself is not my issue. My concern is with Capella's processes, administrative barriers, lack of timely support, and what I believe is a serious disconnect between how FlexPath is advertised and how the doctoral program actually operates.
FlexPath is promoted as allowing students to progress at their own pace. However, once I reached the doctoral-level courses, that flexibility became extremely questionable. I can only take one course at a time, and many assessments require an additional review or approval process beyond the course instructor. These reviews can take days and sometimes much longer especially when revisions are required. During that time, the student is essentially waiting on Capella before being able to move forward.
Yet the course clock continues to run.
Despite being described as "at your own pace," courses still have an established end date. If required reviews, revisions, or approvals delay your progress and you do not complete the course by that deadline, you can receive an incomplete and potentially have to repeat the course. It is incredibly frustrating to be held to a deadline while portions of your progress depend on review processes that you cannot control.
The administrative experience has been equally unacceptable. I recently experienced an issue with my financial portal and spent approximately THREE HOURS on hold attempting to reach Financial Aid. No one ever answered. When I have been able to reach representatives regarding other concerns, I have often been transferred around or spoken with individuals who could not provide clear answers or meaningful resolution.
For a doctoral student investing a significant amount of money, time, and effort into a degree, this level of service is unacceptable.
At this point, the experience has left me seriously questioning the transparency and ethics of some of Capella's practices. The combination of rigid course deadlines, lengthy required approval processes outside of the student's control, limited ability to progress through doctoral courses, and difficulty obtaining timely assistance creates a system that feels unnecessarily obstructive and financially burdensome.
I would strongly encourage anyone considering Capella's doctoral FlexPath program to research the doctoral-level requirements carefully and ask very specific questions about course deadlines, secondary reviews, approval timelines, incompletes, repeating courses, and the financial implications of delays before enrolling. The experience at the doctoral level may be very different from what someone reasonably understands "FlexPath" and "move at your own pace" to mean.
I am disappointed enough with my experience that I am considering seeking independent guidance regarding my rights as a student and whether these practices are consistent with the representations made to students.
I came to Capella to earn a doctorate not to spend my time fighting administrative roadblocks, waiting endlessly for approvals, and trying unsuccessfully to reach departments that are supposed to support students.
For the amount of money students pay, Capella should do much better. read more
