This has always been a demanding school. Its purpose is to prepare students for college, and that preparation begins long before high school. For some students and families, that level of rigor can feel overwhelming. However, I have also seen tremendous growth occur when both students and parents commit themselves to the challenge. There often comes a point where students either learn to thrive within those expectations or struggle to keep pace. The potential for growth is there, but it requires effort from everyone involved. That said, rigor alone does not make a school perfect. My least favorite period was Logic (middle school). During those years, I often felt less like an individual and more like a number. The environment sometimes felt focused on monitoring, correcting, and containing students rather than understanding them. Discipline was extremely strict--even something as small as chewing gum in class was prohibited--yet Logic was still the least well-behaved division in my experience. While the curriculum was strong and prepared students well for high school, it was also the least enjoyable stage of my education. Rhetoric (high school) felt like a more refined, though sometimes stranger, version of Logic. Freshmen and sophomores were often treated similarly to middle school students, while juniors and seniors were given considerably more freedom. In my graduating class, nearly everyone already knew each other, which made it difficult to form new friendships. I also noticed a sharp difference in how students were treated as they got older. Students who were trusted more often behaved better, while those who felt heavily policed tended to push back. That dynamic sometimes created tension between grade levels. As for special education services, my experience varied depending on the year. During my time at the school, education as a whole was experiencing significant staffing challenges, and several teachers either left or were removed from their positions. My experiences in Grammar and Rhetoric were very positive, while Logic was more turbulent. The staff members I worked with were caring people with good intentions. While I cannot speak for every student's experience, my needs in high school were met and often exceeded. Overall, this is a strong school. If your primary goal is a rigorous education that prepares students well for college, it delivers. However, the social environment can sometimes create unnecessary stress for students who are already facing significant academic demands. It is neither a perfect school nor a deeply flawed one. More than anything, it is a lifestyle choice--a decision about how you want your children to be educated and influenced during the years when you are not around.

The reasons being that I was aware of the amount of busy work and numerous projects that students were given throughout the years at this school. I know this because a family member of mine sent children here and I would on occasion help them with homework. Initially, my children's experience was wonderful. I am sad to say that experience didn't last long. Therefore, after several months their experience at this school ended. While my children were there I often volunteered and came to eat lunch with them. I noticed a lot during these visits. I am very conservative and like to decide what I feel is important for my children and how our money should be spent. I firmly believe that a teacher can make or break a younger student's school experience. I also feel if one is going to pay for a religious education that all staff should exemplify Christian teachings and behavior. I don't feel that this was being demonstrated by all staff at this school. I have included pros and cons of the things I noticed and experienced while my children attended St. Vincent's. Hopefully, they will help you in your decision making efforts. I also encourage you to write a review on whatever school you choose to help others decide also. Deciding on a school is big decision and it is hard for one to know what a school is like until your child has attended it. Pros Administration often helps with serving hot lunch. Cafeteria staff makes holidays extra special for students and John is wonderful. Students can get seconds on lunch items without an additional charge. Students in younger grades get a lunch recess and typically an additional one if the teacher is willing to do so. Not all are willing to do so during the winter months. Some the teachers are wonderful and exemplify Christian teachings and behaviors throughout the day. Playground staff is nice to students. Some of the teachers spend their lunch hour eating with students. Students get out early leaving a good portion of the day remaining for those that have a stay at home parent. Uniforms can be purchased at several online and local retailers for reasonable prices. The school doesn't require the school name or logo to be on the clothing, which is a savings. Students in grades 1-8 have their own lockers. The school keeps extra clothing available for emergency situations. However, I recommend having your child keep an extra set of clothing in his/her locker or school bag. The school doesn't keep every size available. Milk price for snack is very reasonable. In 2014 it was fifteen cents. Many staff know students by name. Cons I caught administration lying to my children and then administration tried to tell me that my children were the ones lying. The sad thing is that administration said " I would do it again". This is when things got difficult because administration didn't like that I caught them lying. This is not the type of leadership I want in the school my children attend. Administration could do a much better job in handling issues. Administration could do much better in following through with what they say. Administration doesn't know what the class activity fee is used for and doesn't review teachers supply lists. Administration admitted to me when I pointed some things out on the supply list that some of the quantities seemed excessive. School supplies are overstated; water colors used only once. The mile run is ran on asphalt for the majority of the grades rather than a dirt track - safety issue. School could do a better job with children that have special learning/medical needs. Communication needs improving; parents aren't always informed when they can attend school functions and when students can be dismissed early afterward. Home and School Association and Advisory Board don't publish meeting minutes monthly. Parents are expected to view and print most items from online. Exit interviews aren't conducted by pastor when children are withdrawn from school. Indoor recess sometimes consists of having children remain at desk and be silent. Recycling isn't taught or demonstrated by all teachers. When students are trying to be courteous to other teachers when passing in hallways they are told to get moving. The school has numerous fees and fundraisers. Not all teachers demonstrate Christian teachings or behaviors. Not all teachers are compassionate and some make students cry. Teachers and children aren't any more respectful or polite than at public schools. St. Vincent's doesn't draw from all that affluent of an area and not enough emphasis is placed on watching its customers pocket books. Principle doesn't believe in consistency or mandating policies for staff such as amount of homework. However, there is no problem in doing so for parents. Parent drop off and pick up can be time consuming. There isn't a nurse on duty for the entire day.

"Well your payment didn't go through so we weren't going to send someone with our payment. We called you and your husband and left you both voice messages." I let her know that I didn't have any missed calls or voice messages and that my husband did have a missed call from them but no voice message. She said "well I know there were messages because I personally left them, so we weren't going to send anyone over. We gave you until yesterday to call us back, and because your payment didn't go through, we aren't going to schedule anything with you" I responded saying,"I can see why you would think I wasn't interested if you said you called and left messages and didn't hear from me, however, no messages were left so I had no idea you still needed payment or what you cancelled my appointment". [I was trying to be understanding, while still being confused about these so called message]. I continued and asked if we can move forward with scheduling something in the future. She said "Well you would need to pay the missed appointment and pay for a new appointment and because your card didn't go through, I REALLY doubt you would want to do that". I said, "I was willing to pay for both appointments but because your tone was rude and condescending and the customer service your providing me is uncalled for" I added "when I called and scheduled my first appointment, the man I spoke with was wonderful" then she said, "yeah, he called and left the message with your husband" so I responded "BUT you said you personally left both messages". She continued to be rude to me and speaking to me as if I didn't have the funds to pay them so how could I possible be interested in them. Midway, do yourself a favor and get a new "office manager"! I moved my family here to MN from California so excited to have my kids participate in this once prestigious school district. What I have found now is a district that is declining in many categories of critical academic study, increasing safety issues on campus with little to no action and an increasing emphasis on a definition of equity that has gone far beyond most school districts in the nation. Examples, open use bathrooms for gender of choice, a policy that encourages staff to withhold information from parents regarding gender ideology and instruction on the subject matter that includes that of sexual nature about gender, not biology starting in kindergarten. Thankfully parent are starting to engage, and we have several board members who are parent advocates and stand for excellence in education and putting the family and students first. I fear the damage may be done in our city, we know dozens of families that have pulled their kids.
