Great Service, Good Communication, Cleanliness and Appreciate the time and effort. So glad that they're finally open. Waited for so long.

Tell these guys NOT to iron your pants after hemming. For my last visit, I picked up three pairs of pants and two pairs of jeans had permanent crease seams and discolorations. Maybe this was a freak accident because all of the many pants I brought in previously had creases that could be ironed/washed out. I've always had to wash all of my pants after their hem jobs because I don't prefer creases in my jeans or chinos. I'm pretty sure that if you want creases in your pants, you'll take care of them yourself. They still do good work for a good price though but speak up if you are really uptight about how you want things. read more

It is now under new management. Owner's name is Amy. I brought several items to get altered last month and found out that the previous owners have retired. Amy did an good job on my scrub pants so I decided to come back. I brought a sweater, my dad's dress pants and my bridesmaid's dress to get altered 2 weeks ago and asked if it can be ready by a certain date, and if she couldn't meet that deadline the sweater can wait. So I come back 2 weeks later on a Monday and my clothes weren't ready for pickup. Amy looked frazzled and said "it's not ready, come back tomorrow. If you really need it by today, come back later today." This was a little frustrating and unprofessional, but I let it go and told her I can come back tomorrow. I come back the following day and picked up my clothes. A few days later I needed a last minute sleeve shortening on my dad's button up shirt for the wedding and asked if she can have it ready the next day by 2pm (and I was willing to pay extra). She said she yes, the following day I showed up at 2:30pm and the shirt wasn't ready, she still needed to sew the buttons on the sleeves, so I waited about 5-10 minutes. This is terrible customer service and she was never apologetic for the wait time. I expressed to her that I was on a time crunch and if she couldn't meet the deadline it would've been nice for her to call and let me know. The place is very messy, she has customers' belongings thrown on top of one another. There is no organization to it whatsoever and especially with Covid, she should try to keep items separate. At least the last owners kept it nice and tidy. I've been a customer for the last 5 years but I won't be coming back here anymore. read more

Somehow it's gotten into my head that Canadians just know how to do coats. So it was a no-brainer picking up a couple at a flash sale. Unfortunately while the coats are fab, petite sizes they are not. Too fat for a small, too short for a medium. Such is life. Brought them into Best Alterations and they were able to hem that sucker up. Wool coats were no match for their machines and I am left with beautifully tailored Canadian/Chinese/American coats. This is international cooperation at its finest. read more

It just so rare these days to have a truly caring and human experience. I brought SIX dresses that needed to be hemmed in 2 days. I explained my rush: I had ordered the dresses online for an upcoming trip to NYC and they were all too long. I needed to get them back on a Monday night before I flew out Tuesday morning at 6 am. The owner agreed to the timing and I agreed to paying a healthy price for the rush job. But what I did not expect was a phone call just moments after I left. The owner called to tell me that they did not want me to stress and rush on a Monday night before my trip, and that they would work hard to finish that day! Same day! They did it! I picked up all six perfectly hemmed dresses. I am an avid believer in Best Alteration! THANK YOU! read more

Terrible service. Unprofessional work. Former owners were excellent, but retired. I would not recommend them for any alteration.

Late review - paid a little over $60 for a floor-length skirt to be hemmed and taken in (part of bridesmaid two-piece emsemble for a friend's wedding) - hem ended up really uneven (puzzles me to this day) and still too long (trip-hazard-long) - also wasn't taken in enough. My fault that my timeline didn't allow for a "redo" - so I ended up sewing the skirt up into the coordinating top to make it all work for the wedding *shrug* i won't be back but lots of people have had good experiences here read more

I've lived nearby for many years but rarely have the need for a tailor. When I bought some pants that needed to be shortened, I decided to try this place. They did a beautiful professional job; the new hem was taken in professionally and flawlessly. Happy to support a long time local business. Would definitely visit again. read more

Unlike many businesses who boast they're the "best", this might be the only one I've ever experienced that truly lives up to it's name. Simply put, it IS the best. Notice the 40+ 5-star reviews? Other Yelpers get it. You should, too. We've patronized this establishment for almost 10 years now and each time leave more and more impressed with the quality of work and level of service. Add that to incredible pricing and you've got yourself a winner, people. The incredibly kind couple that run the joint are very honest with what they can and can't do. If he doesn't think it can be done, he'll tell you - love the honesty. It clearly shows they take pride in their work. They've altered everything from jeans to my wedding suit, and not once have I felt nervous leaving an article of clothing there. While I mentioned above that he'll tell if there's something he can't do, I've yet to find that something. It's pretty simple - we won't go anywhere else as long as we're living in the bay area. Be sure to bring cash - they don't accept credit cards! To find it, don't blink or you'll miss it - seriously. It's a tiny (and yes, I mean tiny) storefront on Park St. between San Jose & Clinton across from The Party Warehouse. Park in The Party Warehouse lot and walk across the street, as finding open parking on Park St. out front is nearly impossible. Grab a balloon on the way back. Well, maybe not. Cheers. read more

Came here to get a bunch of pants and suits altered. This is a very small shop owned by an elder couple who are super nice. The wife does all the sewing herself and everytime I see her, she seems to be sewing day in and day out. Her husband helps too but also tends to the customers and does the measuring. They offer the best rate that I know and does an excellent job. They have tiny fitting room towards the back for you to try on and he recommends what part of the clothing you should change in order for it to fit better on you. They are opened 6 days a week and stay open till 7pm on weekdays so I can easily pick up my clothes from work. A few words of advice, don't forget to bring your shoes for pant alterations so you can measure proper length. Don't bring new clothes here as he'll turn you away and tell you to wash it first. He says they almost always shrink and you may not need to end up altering at all. That's honesty right there, rather than trying to trick my money knowing it'll shrink, he wants me to wash it and potentially not earn that money- I guess in trade off I'll definitely be back and refer friends. Lastly, it's cash only. read more

I came here to alter my potato-sack pants that I love so much. The Asian man who owned the place was extremely friendly and even commented that I MUST be into the latest fashion, as he had never seen such a thing. Mother likes to remind me that, yes, I get my fashion sense from her, and as much as I hate to admit it, between her taste in cone bras and mc hammer pants, she DOES know a thing or two in that department. Anywho, the man did a bang up job of making my bathing suit region look humungous in my pants (which was the goal) and altering my suit jacket to have the latest technology in shoulder pads. Everything looks great, though I may have to mow a few extra lawns to pay for it. read more

I actually didnt get to use their services because the dress I wanted to alter was a stretchy polyester/ spandex material and they did not have the machine to work on it. They were very professional and the customers I observed seemed to be regulars and were very appreciative with the couple there. I was a bit dissapointed that they were not able to take in my dress but they were very helpful with suggesting places I can take my dress to. I was glad he didnt take on a task that he was not able to do quality work on. This proves that he is an honest business man. He also helped me hand sew the one jewel that was loose from my clutch because I brought that along to repair. He was nice enough to just sew that back on without my business. I asked him what his prices were to get my jeans hemmed and he said $8 for a simple hem and $16 for a special hem. I will definately come back for that later. read more

This is my 3rd bridesmaid dress that I've brought to Best Alt. I'm a deal junkie and go to 2-3 locations to get estimates. I look no farther than Best Alt now. Best price, good work, open until 7pm and has always beat my pressing deadlines. Clutch. My latest frankenstein project included: Adding dupioni/silk fabric to my maid of honor dress, adding fabric to waist, taking in a significant amount at the hip, shortening the skirt, taking in the excess fabric on the top back, adding fabric to belt, and readjusting snaps on the belt & pin. I came in for 2 fittings because we did the top half first then worked on the bottom half. I was whining like an infant about keeping the pockets which was a feat, but they did & they completed in less than 2 weeks. In fact, David called me 1 day sooner to let me know they completed it earlier than anticipated= $110. Alteration magicians. Note: Don't be fooled by the exterior aesthetics of this store. Yes its small and looks like a small guest house, but its a diamond in the rough. Lastly, don't let that plastic loose here. Its a check or cash establishment. read more

Nicest couple ever and excellent sturdy work. Over the years I've had them hem countless slacks & jeans & also trickier work like altering dresses to be slimmer or straps and skirts smaller without messing up ratio & drape. They did a great job on many a bridesmaid dress over the years! The guy is really honest & will tell you if he doesn't think a job is worth it to do or won't look right. I moved out of Alameda more than 10 years ago to Tri City area but still come here for my alterations! Prices are fair & they stay open late enough to pick up after work. read more

Filipino superstition has it that if you jump really high on New Years Day, you will get taller. Every year I climbed up couches and jumped as high as I could in hopes of getting taller. I've got major hops if I do say so myself, but it just didn't work. I am still standing shy of 5 feet and I just came to accept that my growth spurt ended when I was 12. With that being said, it sucks trying on clothes for my petite stature. Everything has to be either folded or hemmed. I've been trying to find a place that does alterations for a cheap price and lo and behold, my grandma took me to this place and said that it is the best -- literally. Their prices are extremely reasonable and the couple who runs this establishment are really nice and give you their honest opinion. They informed me of the options in the way I wanted my coat sleeves hemmed and gave me the prices for those options. The lady behind the machine also does sewing wonders. She is very meticulous about each hem and does so with precision in her craft. Overall this place is the best. It's affordable and you can be sure that the alterations are done with the best quality in the timeliest manner. read more

I love Yelp... I did a simple search for "alterations" in Alameda and got just the info I needed. I have always shied away from Best due to the appearance on the outside. At a glance it looks like a shack. But after seeing the great reviews here, I went without hesitation. I was pleasantly surprised by the bright, clean interior which did not match the uninviting exterior. The husband/owner was very friendly--calling me "young man" repeatedly even though I'm 37--in a thick Chinese accent. Made my day... He was also very accommodating in my need for having my suit pants altered in time for a wedding this Saturday (it was 5pm Wednesday). He did the same for the gentleman just ahead of me, switching the pick up date from Monday or Tuesday to Saturday, as he needed to pack for a trip out of town. I have no doubt my pants will come back tip-top. Thanks, all! read more

The couple here is very nice and their work is pretty good. I called around trying to get a few of my button up dress shirts altered and every place charged more than $20 while this place only charged $17. It's a great deal and they do a bang up job. They're also super nice and will give you their honest opinion instead of trying to make you spend more read more

Best Alteration - Sewing & Alterations Near Me - Alameda, California

I went here based on Yelp reviews to alter a bridesmaid dress. I procrastinated majorly since most places don't seem to be accessible if you work until 6ish since they're not open very late. Pro is this place is open until 7pm. I got there at 6:45. The couple was very nice and we spoke Cantonese together. The shop is small but clean and full of clothes so you know they have good business. I tried on the dress (strapless floor length) and they started pinning it. They told me I would have to take it in and shorten it. They quoted me the price $90 (the dress cost $135!). This is the first time I've ever had anything tailored so I couldn't tell if it was reasonable or not. The hem part about 3 inches off was around $30 and the taking it in was around $60. However, I got the dress back so quickly (in a week) so I was happy with that part. The only thing is I think the dress was taken in a little too tight as it would push up the fat around my armpits. And if I raised my arms above my head, it was in danger of falling off. But overall it was fine, the stitching was very good so you couldn't tell it had been altered. Note, they only take cash or check only if you are an Alameda citizen. There's two parking spots on the street with a green curb. There's also a parking lot sort of and since those homes are not occupied, its ok to park. read more

The nicest, most competent and most reasonably priced tailor I have ever used. They could not be more helpful and their work is impeccable. Every time I pay them I feel guilty that they charge so little. This is how a business is supposed to operate!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

This place is really great. Fair prices and good quality work. The owner's are really nice too. I had my nudies hemmed here for $8, and they did an amazing job. This place is cash only though, so keep that in mind. read more

My family and I have been coming here for all of our alteration needs for the past 15 years. We've had everything done from simple jeans hemming to meticulous fittings for evening wear and have yet to be disappointed. The husband and wife team that make up Best Alteration are friendly and efficient. We go there so often that they're almost like family now. Once, right before a wedding I was attending, I found that my brand-new cocktail dress desperately needed the hem repaired. I ran into Best Alteration and explained my plight to the wife. She immediately fixed it on the spot - NO CHARGE! I guess she saw that I was in a rush and was really sweet about it. This is a really great little tailoring shop that gets my two thumbs up. read more

I went to Best based on Megan's Yelp recommendation. I needed to get the straps adjusted on my bridesmaid dress. A simple job. They adjusted them correctly and also brought the straps in a touch so they wouldn't fall off my shoulders. A nice touch. I also brought in a white coat with black quilted stiching all over it. It fit in the shoulders but was a straight fit and wanted it to look more fitted. It came back looking great. You'd never know it was altered. I'd say that's amazing considering the complicated pattern of the coat. I gave them plenty of time (over 2 weeks) to complete the alterations. The items were ready on time. I did notice that they had piles of jeans that they were altering, so they must be experts at that. read more

Let's see... Friendly. Affordable. Efficient. Speedy. Helpful. Why could I possibly recommend them? Five years ago I was losing a lot of weight, fast. I brought in the same three pairs of pants once a month to have the waist taken in. After the third or fourth time, they jokingly told me to "buy new pants!" I liked that they recognized me, and felt comfortable enough with me as a client to joke around. I don't know if he does it anymore, but it used to be if you made a BIG order (in my case, five or six pairs of pants, some with linings, and two skirts) and paid in cash, in advance, they used to give discounts. read more

This place really is the best alterations I've had. The prices are fairly reasonable, especially considering they have a storefront in the first place, even if it is really tiny. (I know of a couple of tailors who are smaller and work out of their homes so they can afford to be cheaper, but as a single person working on pieces they also have a smaller workload they can take on.) I gave them an A's Jersey that was way too big and I picked it up the day of the game and it was perfectly fitted! Also, they don't accept credit cards, so be sure to bring cash! read more

Owners are extremely pleasant and the prices are reasonable. I brought my bridesmaid dress there to alter, and the price they charged me was significantly cheaper than what other tailors charged the other bridesmaids. Overall, the work was good. The owners are very hard working. I didn't know where to go to get my dress altered. Luckily, I found them through Yelp --- thanks to everyone who posted reviews here! read more

Really mixed feelings about this place. At first everything was good. I brought several, and I mean SEVERAL items and they fixed them. Work wasn't great but descent. If I were to have an initial complaint it would be that there prices are way too high. About $10.00 more than tailor I now use on the other side of town. My second issue is that somewhere this guy (the owner) just decided he didn't want my business. I've now taken 2 items there that he says are impossible to fix, while other tailors gladly take the work. Plus he wants on the spot payments for rush items. The whole thing just seems a little too over the top for me. Today sealed the deal for me, was told by two tailors they could fix my items, he told me impossible "show me the tailor that can fix this!" Ok? Bye. read more

This place is the best in Alameda! I had to get 6 pairs of pants, 6 shirts, and one suit jacket done for my job uniform and brought them here. The man and his wife (assuming they're the owners) are very nice and really take in what you want. I like my stuff fitted, but I also need to be able to move in them. The man spent some time and told me what they would be able to do with the cut to make it look the best. I told them I would at least need 1 pair done in a week so I could work and the rest could be done at a later time. He was able to do the one pair for me and even had the others done 5 days early! My outfits came out great and the quality is also great. I would recommend this place to anyone. The price was what I was expecting for doing so many alterations. Give them a try! You will not be disappointed. PS: This is a cash only place! read more

Everyone else on Yelp gives this tailor five stars, so why not me? Great, friendly service, nice job done on the alterations. Parking might seem to be problematic, but there's 20 minute green curb parking right in front of the business. Very happy with this tailor. read more

First, I brought in a pair of A.P.C jeans to be taken in. They did a good job, but took out the labels and didnt care to put them back in! If I ever try to resell they are useless, needless to say the stitching is extremely crooked. Then, I brought a very unique Gucci blazer in to be altered, and he told me it was impossible. ok. So I took the blazer to Golden Needle and the woman did an amazing job in less than 3 days, no sweat. Looks flawless. Overpriced, careless, and lazy is what this place seems like to me. read more

I am a long term customer here and I can say this spot is the only people I trust with my alterations! From cheerleading outfits, dresses & jeans. This place can do it for you. Recently I had my bridesmaid dress length altered, I first brought it in without my heels & he didn't want to measure where to alter until I had my heels that I was wearing for the wedding. I'm glad he told me that because some places wouldn't even consider that! Kudos to him! So I did come back a week after with my heels and it took him 2 weeks to alter it & it came out to $38.00 super good price don't you think!? Very happy with them, I don't know why I never wrote a review about them before!!! read more

Having a good tailor for your alterations is a must. This is now my go-to place for all my alteration needs! I brought in two pairs of jeans to have hemmed and taken in and they did a great job. I even asked to keep the original hem for one of the pairs of jeans and they were able to accommodate beautifully! This place is great... once you walk in, it's down to business. There's a fitting room (as there always should be) for you to try on your garment. They start pinning and get you out of there within a matter of minutes. The Chinese couple were super friendly and very accommodating. Their prices are very reasonable as well! Overall, highly recommended. =) read more

Really great place for high quality tailoring and reasonable prices. I had to get a wedding outfit tailored (adding slit to the bottom part of the dress) and she did a fantastic job. 100% recommend. read more

Love this place. Very fast turn around. They made sure I was completely satisfied with my adjustment before I left.

They really are the best! My first time getting jeans hemmed and based on their yelp reviews, decided to check them out. Parking wasn't so bad---there's 24 minute parking right in front, or you can drive around the corner for more street parking. I wasn't able to interact with the wife since the husband was working the front, but he was very friendly and took the time to explain the different hems and prices for my jeans. It's cash only, but since you can pay when you pick it up you have time to swing by the ATM first. When I got my jeans back it didn't look like it was altered at all---and they did such a great job keeping the same hem. Pretty affordable too! Will definitely be back! read more

So, just had my suit jacket altered and it fits nothing like it was supposed to. The owner pinned it up and had me try it on, fit great, looked great. Got it back today and tried it on at home, can't even hold my arms in front of me or raise them above my head without fear of ripping the jacket. Really nice folks, just wouldn't take my suits there for alteration again. Going to call them, will update afterwards. Update* called the gentleman, he insisted that I bring it back to him and let him try to make it right. Giving them a fourth star for that alone. Will update again once it's all said and done. read more

:) This is my go to spot for alterations. The husband and wife are are awesome! They are so sweet and they get right down to business once you enter. There's a cute lil changing room. You put on the thing u need altered, you come out and the guy is ready to measure with his little pillow handy. Turnaround time is awesome. And they have accomodated rush requests I've made in the past. The quality of their work is awesome. My pants, dresses are finished as if that is the size, length they were supposed to be originally. The thread they use match so well, unlike other places I've gone where the yarn color they use is kinda off. I am a huge fan of this place and continue to come back even though I live an hour away now, goes to show how great they really are. You should give them a try. :) read more

I have been going to Best Alteration for years. I used to live in Alameda and being a "clothes horse" AND only 4'8 I need ALL of my pants altered so you can imagine how often I've been there. I think we can all agree that finding the right tailor is extremely difficult. So when I found Best Alteration, I knew I found the one. You can't describe, you can fabricate, you can't manufacture it. They always ask me, Tung, when did you know? I tell them "I just knew." Wait, we're still talking about Best Alteration right? I came here a few weeks back to get my jeans tapered; yes, tapered. When you find the perfect pair of raw selvege denim, you work at it. You spend time and communicate. Take care of each other. Wait, are we still talking about jeans? The tailor/owner spoke with me very detaily(?) about the alteration. Exactly the opening diameter and how I shouldn't do this and that. If it wasn't for his advice, it would've looked like I used rubber bands to tie the openings. You feel the nostalgia coming? Now go stuff your shoes with extra socks. I made it clear that I want the red selvedge line to remain intact. He understood and his tone, voice, and gesture made me feel I like I could trust him. The job costs $25 and I paid when I picked the pair of jeans up. It was perfect, can't complain. I know how hard it is to taper raw denim. Tipped his wife or lady co-worker a few bucks and I was out the door. Prices are extremely competitive and I will be coming here for all of my alterations, especially denim needs. It's a mom and pop shop and I don't feel like I'm being cheated. Hope they stay open forever, or until tapered denim are out of style. read more
