I went to Be Scene for the first time today and my life has changed... well, at least regarding my hair. I came across Be Scene Studios through a friend's recommendation because he's friends with some of the stylists. I read the reviews and went ahead and booked an appointment with Ara Ko for a Saturday morning. I was excited to see what she can do with my hair but also nervous because this was my first time ever going to a salon like this, so I didn't know what to expect, or what she'd expect from me. The stylist: I've read tons of reviews about this place and everyone can agree that these stylists are all good at what they do. But I don't think anyone has talked about Ara yet so I guess I'll set the trend. Let me tell you guys... she is EXCELLENT! From the start she asked me and actually listened to what I wanted my hair to look like. She was able to provide some choices and suggestions about what will be best for me. I wanted to get a low fade on the sides and leave the top longer because I sweep it to the side. So she set off to work and throughout the cut, I could feel how focused she was in getting the cut right and her attention to detail was very good and appreciated. Towards the end of the haircut she gave me choices about how to proceed with my hair. But more importantly, she gave me advice and suggestions about my hair and how I should style it to make it optimal for my head specifically. She taught me things about my own hair and head that I never even knew about, so she's very knowledgeable too. For example, she told me how to better style my fade and which way to sweep my hair because of how my hair grows. Without me even mentioning it to her, she noticed that my hair was in bad shape from the previous person I had at a different place. I really appreciate Ara for her attention to this and I also really appreciate that she took the time to fix up all of these mistakes from the previous person for me. That made all the difference in my hair. I'm so happy about that. She also recommended the best hair product for me in her opinion but I decided to hold off on that for now to finish my current wax. But maybe I'll buy it next time when I run out. It was like $20. The haircut ended with her styling my hair with that wax, so I know it's good. She also offered the option to wash my hair but I figured I didn't need it at the time. Not sure what difference it would make, so maybe I'll take the offer next time just to see. I mean, I never had that offered before. I have never been so happy about a haircut before, so you know this place is special to me. Heck, this is my first time ever writing a review so you know it's so good, I just had to. Price: It was a huge change for me with the cost of a men's haircut costing $35. Was it worth it? Absolutely! Will I be back? Absolutely! Maybe I'll make it a once a month type deal instead of twice a month like before, but I think you really do get what you pay for and the extra dollars is worth it for a great haircut. Guys who are reading this and are on the fence, I highly recommend these stylists. You won't be disappointed. I got so many compliments from friends and family after coming home from this experience. I could always try the other stylists too, but I'm sticking with Ara. You guys will probably have the same experience as me no matter who you choose though. I have been going to In Hye for my hair for over 10 years. She has been at Bescene for a few years now and it is conveniently located in Rockville and has a cool vibe. Even though I have been going to her forever, each time she makes sure to ask me how I want my hair cut and colored, the same or if I have a different style direction in mind. I started composing a review eons ago but I literally couldn't summon the mental energy to do it for like two years. I had such a demoralizing experience. Now that time has passed the wound has healed a little (just kidding but not really!) I can testify. So I wanted to have a "fun" hair color done for the first time ever; I don't even dye my hair or do highlights or anything. I did a TON of research. I saw that Be Scene had a huge Insta following for fantasy hair, and I was impressed that there was such a trendy salon right here in humble Rockville, MD. It seemed very LA to me. I decided to go with a deep sangria pink-red and dove into the hazing ritual that is their booking system (I don't remember the name or if they still use it). As I recall, you choose the service you want and submit the request ... into a black hole where they evaluate whether you're worth their business or not. They note that there's no guarantee your appointment will be accepted and stylists can accept, decline, or drop you with no notice or explanation any time. Truth in advertising! I booked an available slot with one stylist, Meg. She accepted. Then she contacted me at 10 pm like 36 hours before the appt and said she had to cancel and fly out of town last minute. Back to the drawing board! Mayaan was available. She accepted; yay! Then she declined. Boo :( THEN! she accepted again at 9 am the morning of the original appointment. Nice, takesie backsies is a thing, I guess! I was so distraught and worried I wasn't ever going to get an actual appointment at this point that I emailed her a pathetic groveling message thanking her so very much for making time for little me, in hopes that would clinch it. Saturday AM: Arrived at the warehouse. The receptionist was a joke; she couldn't have cared less about greeting or smiling or whatever lame-o stuff receptionists do. Then I met Mayaan and she took me over to get started. I noticed the Instagram photo shoot setup in the corner. It became clear where their focus lies. Mayaan was polite enough but she reminded me of a sorority girl who'd just sort of tolerate my presence but talk about me behind my back. Worse than that though, she mostly ignored me. I got this vibe from her and the salon overall that I wasn't the kind of customer they value: not thin, pretty, or cool enough. Not one of the Beautiful People. Not making it into that Insta booth. Had the distinct impression that she took my appointment (after taking it and dropping it first) because nothing cooler or more expensive came along, or that person cancelled. You know how stylists and colorists are always chatting you up while you're in the chair? Well ... again, if I were an Insta Chick, maybe. Instead she maybe said five words to me the whole time. She passed me off to two other people who don't even work at Be Scene. They were just floating around hoping Linh would notice them eventually. She and her friend, one of these Be Scene sorority pledges, just gossiped while I sat there. They bitched about how burned out they were with this job ("ugh I've been doing hair for three years and I'm like so done") WHILE doing my hair. At one point Mayaan tuned back in and tepidly asked me if I'd anything cool that summer or something. When I told a little story about seeing Drake at my birthday dinner, they kind of sneered like "oh okay this bitch thinks she's cool I guess." Really?! I had read here on Yelp in a few reviews that Mayaan was so great because she really took the time to explain how to care for your hair, what products to use, how to maintain it ... etc. For me it was "yeah pink washes out the fastest. There's nothing you can do. I'll give you a sample of this Keracolor clenditioner at a discount to try, like 10 bucks." When I checked out she handed me a full bottle that was over 20 bucks. Btw that crap made my hair WORSE. So dry and nasty. The only positives: she did do a nice job on my color. But the ONLY friendly person there who worked on my hair (just to blow dry) was this sweet girl named Taylor. I was so grateful to encounter someone friendly and down to earth that I confessed she was by far the best person I interacted with there all day. After being hacky-sacked from one rando free-floating Linh Sorority Pledge to another. I asked how long she'd worked there and she laughed and said "oh this is my first day here. I don't work here." Well, Taylor, I hope you shot up the ranks because you were the ONLY person who didn't make me feel like a reject they deigned to admit into their sanctum of gorgeous Insta bitches without a head shot. It was clear they genuinely did not care if I spent my money there or not. There were prettier, more photogenic girls to fawn over. Obviously I never went back. If you can hang with the clique and this kind of place is your thing, you might love it! Clearly lots of Yelpers do. I was not so fortunate. read more

This was my first time here at the new location and with the recommendation of my friends I booked an appointment with Victoria. The process was very simple and I was able to book the next day with a confirmation email and text message. The location itself was in a warehouse and the atmosphere was urban and very appealing. I was warmly greeted by Victoria and she helped me settle on a style of hair that would accommodate what suited me the best. I have pretty thick hair so seeing her be able to spend the time to properly texture my hair so it can be more manageable was fantastic. After the haircut there was a shampoo/conditioning, straight razor to clean up the rest and styled at the end. Overall the experience was perfect and I was an extremely satisfied customer. Megan M greeted me with a smile and a head full of curls herself which put me at ease . She could tell I was scared of getting my hair cut and assured me she would only take off as much as I wanted. Ok the reason I'm giving it two stars is because of a few things ...the stylist I had was very nice. Although she wasn't thorough on explaining how to maintain upkeep with my hair and to brace myself for the dryness since it was bleached since then I've done my research. They don't use olaplex here because it's too time consuming meaning they make less money with less customers to fit in. Olaplex helps a lot especially when you're getting your hair bleached trust me!!! google it!! they use Brazilian bond builder bc it's faster but my hair felt FRIED afterwards.. Lol ok moving on to the assistants they have. For the price you're paying you expect the assistant to know how to blow dry and give a good scalp massage. They do not. If I'm dropping close to 500$ I would expect assistants know these things. The girl burned my scalp with the blow dryer a couple of times and I did tell her. Also left conditioner in my hair bc I literally felt it .. when I shared that with her I don't think she cared lol aside from that the ash tone the stylist gave me was great .. I just really don't think you're getting your moneys worth truthfully. Since then I've found a great salon just thought I'd share my experience. read more

I was coming to BeScene since 2013. I spent my best hair years with them, and I am finally saying - this is the divorce. I wanted to leave and find another stylist for a long time, but I kept coming back hoping it will get better - but it really doesn't. After coming here first when Linh rented in Bethesda, then at a Rockville Spa Salon and then opening his own place - I am finally saying definite goodbye and here is why. After loyally coming here all this time, and spending thousands of dollars, they today again asked me: is this your first visit here. It's really no big deal if it was just a silly mistake of a front person, but there is no sense of appreciation to your clients whatsoever. They will treat you like you are invisible, and they are the celebrities of hair. In the past when I had appointments with Linh he really was always half listening to what I wanted for my hair style. Only the very first time of a specific style he looked excited for an instagram worthy "major makeover", all my 2 follow up visits when I asked to do the same - he was not interested at all, he did not do what I wanted, he was barely paying attention to me sitting in his chair. I did pay the same so it's unfair. He was always preoccupied with running the salon and other clients - he constantly multitasks which is great for him - but not for me a regular person who is making a special day of doing my hair, and looking forward to this moment for months. Speaking of - yes, it is very hard to make appointments. That's why I stopped booking with Linh - too expensive for what I was getting, too hard to get an appointment, and even when you score it - he is not paying any attention. I started going to another girl in that salon. She is great, and I really liked her attitude and her skills are amazing. But it's her that I liked - not the salon. Still constant waiting for hours. They say it's because your hair is so complicated, but it's only partly true - it's also constantly overbooked and mismanaged. It's also not very clean. The new place looks cool and hip, but if you sitting there waiting for hours and staring in all the corners you see how dusty and dirty it. It was the same with previous places. Today was the second time in a row that my appointment was misbooked. They blamed the new system and looked at me as if it was my fault. But I booked the appointment a month ago and I got a confirmation email the day before my appointment. They did not act on fixing it, the person who I booked it with acted very frustrated and never followed up with me - instead proceeded with his other clients. I was in the mercy of another much more junior stylist who agreed to take care of my hair today (the price tag was still way over $200 - they charged me full price) but at least he was super nice. The people of this salon definitely have an amazing talent, and that's why I was keep coming back. But I don't think I can do this anymore - it used to be my personal celebration day when I went to do my hair - it became a torture with anger and tears from frustration, so like any toxic relationship I have to put an end to it even though it's hard. I come back a week later and the stylist is late, (lack of professionalism). I decided to try this salon out since I heard good things about them. My hair is very dark and I wanted an ash blonde balayage. When I came in the stylist told me that what I wanted was unachievable. Okay cool so I still give her a chance to see what she can do. She bleached my hair first (not my roots).. then she bleached my roots. When I left the salon I loved the color. Then I waited a few days to wash my hair. I used what the stylist recommended which was a cleansing conditioner. 1) the color looked completely different after the first wash. Some people pointed out that it was green. 2) the recommendation to use only a conditioner made my hair oily. I don't think this stylist had my best interest at heart. I honestly could've done the color+technique myself and now I'm walking around with a color I never wanted. I think she used a semi or demi permanent color on my hair because she did say she wanted me to come back in 8 weeks to do the same exact process over again. I should've known it wasn't right when she started bleaching my roots. I will say the people were very nice. read more

This is my go to salon now. I finally have a stylist after living in Rockville my entire life; specifically I see April. She and the staff at Be Scene are incredibly intelligent when it comes to hair/scalp. My hair tends to be very dry and very curly/frizzy. During my consultation on my second appt., April educated me about my hair and told me what products to try and techniques to use to keep my hair healthy. This salon does not sell products so yes their prices are on the higher end but they aren't pushing products in your face like other mediocre salons. Majority of salons make their $$ from selling product which makes their prices low. But please, if you aren't willing to spend money so you look/feel great, then don't come to BeScene. And their prices are listed when you book so there are no hidden fees. I have gotten my hair colored/cut here twice in the pst few months and I never received more compliments on my hair in my entire life...and I like to think I have great hair. The studio is vibrant, has an industrial feel & very modern. Free parking and good music to boot! The entire staff is incredible because they all work together. I had a colorist wipe off dye off my ear, a student wash my hair and the receptionist/student blow dry my hair. This just goes to show that they don't hire just anyone and it takes a village. And all the students/interns were knowledgeable and are very involved. They aren't just standing around like a bump on the log; I appreciate that because everyone has to start somewhere. The owner is very involved and you can tell he has a great relationship with clients/staff because every time someone came in, he was welcoming them and giving out hugs. April also welcomed me with a hug and it was appreciated. They have a barber on staff and he is talented from what I have seen on his Instagram. Almost all the staff has Instagram and when you see their work, you're going to want to book asap. I don't know how to praise this salon and their staff anymore but do know, they're incredible and do incredible work. Their work is art, so if you want to be their canvas, go for it. Lexy is amazing. I came to her after taking a break from baylayage to try to grow my hair out and make it healthier in general. After telling Lexy how important my length was, she literally sat there and cut each individual split/dead end off ONE BY ONE. It took well over an hour. By the end, my hair was the same length as it was when I walked in, just healthy! The next appointment I decided I wanted to go back to my baylayage, but do it slow and the right way to maintain the health of my hair. She listened to what I wanted, even though it required her to tone my hair again after the blow dry. I've never had a stylist who listened to what I wanted and actually followed through with it. Also, I message her on instagram all the time with inspo pictures and how I feel/what I am thinking that day (I change my mind a LOT about my hair and need to talk it out to figure out what I actually want haha) and she is SO responsive and doesn't even act like I am annoying her at all. Prices are outrages and the way my hair turned out was horrible. bleach was left way too long and my hair turned green. never again will I make the mistake of coming here again. They care about the Youtube and Instagram famous people to advertise them. I heard about this salon through social media and started to stalk the shop for a few months. I finally decided to go to Mayaan, because her work is just amazing. The appointment process is easy. Parking is a little tight, but fine (they have their own lot, plus paid parking on the side). The studio is absolutely gorgeous! It's modern, industrial and has so much room for the amount of people that are always there. The receptionist was super friendly and understanding when I was late coming from work. Mayaan was a dream to work with. I'm Asian with naturally dark hair and have trying to go blonde for about 3 years now and she took me closer to my vision in one session. We couldn't get the color exactly where I wanted it, but in the meantime, she gave me super trendy, amazing grey hair until we hit it again. I can't speak highly enough about her and the process... she was so friendly and walked me through her process. I can't wait to go back in a couple of weeks to tone, and then a couple weeks after that for another full color process. The price is a little high, but not the highest I paid for and honestly, with the skill these stylists have and versatility, I don't mind paying to get my hair where it needs to be. read more

So I went to be scene studios for my first time the other day. I was told that they had great outcomes with their hair coloring, but I was sadly mistaken. I wanted to go blonde or honey color from a copper toned hair color and it ended in a complete disaster. My hair is dark at the root and there are blonde and grey streaks. The root does not fade throughout the length of my hair so it looks uneven. I was told by the lady doing my hair that she would do free of charge due to the fact that she messed up my hair, but when it was time to pay she said my total would be 600$ to do another session and get my hair to the color that I came there for. I am extremely frustrated. I even sent pictures of my hair blonde a few years ago a month prior specifically stating what I wanted. read more

They bleached my whole head and fried off all of my hair :( I'm not sure if it was because they were busy or not paying attention or what. Also, my hair turned out green! The color isn't even as important as the fact that it will take YEARS for my hair to recover and grow. They were so unprofessional and unresponsive about it all. To make matters worse...I was trying to have another place fix my hair for me but they to know what was used on my hair before they tried to put more dye on top. Be Scene's stylist REFUSED to give me the mix (as if I would want to steal the recipe for disaster) and then Be Scene's management said there was nothing they could do about it...that they couldn't force her to tell them...most places would fire hairdressers for being uncooperative with management but they didn't care. Their Instagram might look trendy and what not but I am not the only person I know who has gone there and had their hair fried off. If you have virgin hair then maybe try it. I visited Be Scene for the first time in September and was excited to check out the salon. Stepping in, I really liked the aesthetic of the place, unfortunately, that is where the compliments stop. I was not impressed with the professionalism of the stylists, the price, nor the general experience. First off, the initial stylist I was supposed to see tried to cancel with less than 24 hours notice and continued to send unprofessional text messages to try and get out of her appointment with me. I reached out to the management at the salon and they kindly found another stylist for me. The new stylist I worked with talked me out of what I wanted to get done since she didn't think the idea I had in mind would work (it has before with other stylists). I did not find that process very collaborative and felt forced to listen to her since she was the one in control. It also wasn't until a few days later of letting the cut and color settle that I realized the color was not quite what I wanted nor was the cut what I had asked for. The way she had styled my hair, it looked great in that moment, but since I am not a professional stylist, I had asked that the cut be something that would be low-maintenance and let me wear my hair naturally after showering (wavy). The way the hair was cut makes it look like I am wearing a weird helmet. And lastly, I have gotten my hair colored and cut before at high-end salons, but was blown out of the water by the price of the entire experience. I typically spend between $250-$300 on a balayge, cut, and style and the price was close to $550! Needless to say, I am disappointed since I was looking forward to trying out a new salon and will be going to another salon this weekend to get my hair re-cut since it has grown out very odd. After seeing this name everywhere on instagram and looking at the profiles, i picked my stylist and a day before my appointment i got an email with a different stylist that i did not know. I called and they said that my chosen stylist no longer worked there. Instead of asking me if it was okay to put me with someone else, they just did it. Had i not seen the email, i would've came into the salon the next day completely unaware. Let me start off by saying that i have NEVER dealt with a more unprofessional front desk. Not even at a hair cuttery. When i came in, no one was at the front desk so i just stood there, waiting. I had to sign a form that basically said i would not sue them (annoying) but okay i signed it. My stylist was sweet but clearly high and hungover since she reeked of marijuana and alcohol. NOT PROFESSIONAL. I was not offered water or anything to drink and just sat through my SEVEN HOUR process. Keep in mind that i just asked for a simple caramel color, on my virgin hair. I thought i had picked an easy color after doing my research regarding hair color and going blonde. Well i guess i was wrong because my hair turned out a hideous green grey and stripes of mud brown which i was charged $400 for!!!! I told my stylist that i did not like it but she insisted that the grey would fade after a couple washes. I realized then that they had absolutely no interest in making a client feel confident and happy, they just want your money. For the price you pay you should be getting a 5 star service. I will NEVER be returning here or recommending this place to anyone. The reviews are fake and they only post work that will get a lot of "likes" and since the owner is so obsessed with instagram, i'm not surprised. Please save up your money and go somewhere else.
