The guys at Folly Road Auto Repair were quick and accurate. I appreciate transparency and…read moredirectness, which they had. I don't want to go somewhere that tries to upsell me on every little thing. That didn't happen at FRAR. 5 stars. Thanks again!!

While I was in Charleston I had a good experience with these guys - they installed new exhaust…read moremanifolds and a few other things. In the month after I noticed some rattling sounds and noticed that the oil intake pipe wasn't as secure as it was before. Didn't think much of it other than sloppy work. In the months after the repair, I noticed more noises, but just assumed that I had to replace the engine because the shop told me that it sounds like the "lifters" were starting to go. I'm a traveler so I'm always on the go and recently (in Austin Texas +10,000 miles, 5 months and 4 days after the work), the noises became so bad that I started calling around places and getting quotes to get another engine put in. While they were diagnosing the noises, they discovered that there were a couple of bolts missing from the exhaust manifolds and had to redo the work that was already done. They changed the gaskets and secured them properly. On top of that, they noticed another exhaust leak in a different spot which was probably there five months ago as well, but Folly either didn't see it or didn't bother looking/checking. So far I had to pay $400 to fix their work and it looks like there's another 300 to go. Joey refused to refund for reimburse me for that however he did say that if I was in town he would take care of it. Unfortunately I am not and now I'm out $400-$700. Attached are photos of the work that was done then and the work that has been done now. They tried to argue that "well it's over 10,000 miles later and you didn't notice any noise right away" - This type of repair job should last over 100K, maybe they were sloppy cuz they knew I'm a traveler.

West Ashley

Great experience at the West Ashley Gerald's. Prompt Desk service, and the wait to get 4 tires…read moremounted/balanced, installed was not long at all. Especially this was the Saturday before the "Snow" arrived in Charleston. It would have been easy to not offer service due to an early closure, but it was not. 5-Star service. Cb

This is a hard one to write. I've been a reliable customer for years, at least well over a decade…read more And I'm sad to say Gerald's isn't what it used to be. Let me start by saying the staff is always friendly. When you walk in, those working the registers, checking you in/out, etc. are always a pleasure to work with. While I have also had a positive experience with the techs, however, their attitude is not genuine. Recently I took my car in for new tires and an alignment. Long story short they put on the new wheels but said they couldn't do an alignment without first installing new balljoints, bushings and "might as well do the whole package and add control arms even though they're fine". Bringing what would have been a $600 job to $1,4000. Balljoints are $15-30, bushing $40- but if we wanted to do the "whole package" you're looking at roughly $200 max for a job that takes 1-2 hours. So where is the extra $600 coming from? Labor, right? Nope! Turns out Gerald's is overcharging an outrageous amount for parts. The numbers weren't adding up and I told them the new tires were fine and to bring my car down. I called a friend who has a renowned shop in Charleston for a second opinion because I had a gut feeling something was wrong. It was there he confirmed Gerald's was trying to screw me over and that my balljoints were perfectly fine and while the bushings had some wear, nothing was severe and they could have done the alignment. (Their shop successfully did it by the way with no issue and no issues popped up on my car from doing so. I also heard several horror stories from cars they had received after being at Gerald's.) I was able to inspect the balljoints and bushings myself and can confirm, everything was fine. Last year (January 2025) I had taken another car in for mechanical issues which I was overcharged for as well, so this isn't a new problem Gerald's is having. I was just hoping that would be the only time and that they might have fired those men who ripped me off. Instead, it looks like this is their new culture and they're digging their heels in. Get your tires done, sure, but anything else I would actively avoid them. They're right up there with Firestone on being some of the worst shops. Take their suggestions with a grain of salt and for the love of God get a second opinion before you let them take your money. I'm very fortunate I had someone in the industry I could call, but most places will do inspections for free or at minimal cost. It's worth it. Trust me!
