My fiance loved the hazelnut and coconut flavors. It's hard to pick which flavor to try. I wanted them all!! 27 different flavors total. Since it was raining, we decided to grab an actual table inside the parlor to the left of the to-go line. From other reviews, Berthillon is usually packed, but the weather seemed to tame the crowds today. We got seated instantly. Everything is little pricey, but the ice cream is definitely top notch. Worth a try if you're visiting Paris! Make sure to double check if they're open before you go. Berthillon is a Must Go to the original shop in the center of the Ile Saint- Louis, not the over touristed bistros just across the Pont Saint-Louis. And spend the extra few euros to sit in the tea salon with a mostly local crowd rather than on the street with the tourists. My wife had the chocolate with whipped cream; I had three different sorbets: raspberry, peach and strawberry. Both come in a bowl with a lovely, crisp almond tuile. Was it the best ice cream and sorbet we ever had? Maybe. We discussed that at length, as we reminisced of our honeymoon in Italy and how we ate gelato from one end of the boot to the other. I think we need to go back to Italy to do a taste test. But for those few who's reviews state that Berthillon is overrated there is just no hope for you. Our late afternoon break in the ice cream parlor at Berthillon after walking around the islands was one of the highlights of our trip. Just don't make the mistake we did and stand in the long to-go line for a scoop of ice cream if you want to eat in the parlor. (Psst! There is virtually no line for the parlor so even better reason to opt for that.) First, the hot chocolate. It was darker and more bitter than the one I had at Angelina, and I usually like dark chocolate. Here I had to add a lot more cream than at Angelina. Overall, I preferred the hot chocolate at Angelina, but Berthillon's was still excellent and I liked it more than the one I had at the tea room of hoity-toity chocolatier Jacque Benin. My daughter loved her raspberry sorbet which she had to herself. The rest of us shared gianduja orange, chocolate, and pistachio ice creams, and cherry sorbet. The gianduja orange was my favorite. It consisted of chocolate and orange with little pieces of orange peel without the least bit of bitterness. The chocolate was visibly darker than any other chocolate ice cream I've had. It was excellent. It was also very dense - about the texture of gelato. The pistachio was good but nothing to write home about. The cherry sorbet was fine (though it reminded me of cherry Icee), but really, whose genius idea was it to get sorbet? Oh wait, it might have been mine. The menu didn't say sorbet and I thought it might be ice cream studded with chunks of cherry like some sort of French Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia. Psst! Berthillon! After hearing so much about this place's unique flavors, I knew I had to give it a try. Coming from LA, I thought I knew what unique ice cream tasted like, but Berthillon's ice cream was definitely the most true-to-flavor ice cream I have tasted. Ice cream in America relies on the fattiness and sweetness to make it taste good, but Berthillon's ice cream relies on the natural flavors of the ingredients to stand out. I ordered the Marron Glacé while my girlfriend ordered the Raspberry Rose flavor - both just a single scoop and without cream (more on that later). The Marron, or chestnut, tasted like a wonderful chestnut rum drink. There were little bits of candied chestnut that reminded me of Ben and Jerry's. The Raspberry and Rose blew us both away with its tartness and elegant rose hints. It was more of a sorbet. Both ice creams were served with this wonderful thin cookie thing that tasted really good when you dipped it in the ice cream. There was an option to get the ice cream with Chantilly cream for 1.5euros extra, but we cheaped out. Honestly, I wish I had gotten it, seeing others' scoops. It looked like a giant Sundae. They have a take-away shop and a sit-down shop right next to each other. So turned off by this place. Such bad customer service. My husband asked for three scoops and if they could put one scoop into another cup bc my daughter has dairy allergies. The lady said she couldn't do that and said we would be charged for two scoops and another separate scoop since technically, it is that. However, because of medical reasons we were hoping that they would accommodate. It's not a big ask since they are just separating a scoop of ice cream out for a little kid. I get that they have single scoops for a reason to prevent being ripped off from strangers who might collude but we are a family and would share three scoops of ice cream if we could. My husband told the person that it's for a little kid's allergies and doesn't make sense for us to pay 3 extra euros just to accommodate to her allergies. She said she was a mom too, clearly not a mom with allergies. Then she shamed us by saying, "I wouldn't go around asking employees to break the rules just for you. You have the choice to buy three separate scoops to accommodate to your allergies." She said it very condescendingly as if we were cheapos who were in the wrong. When we told her we didn't want to buy the ice cream, she stormed off and said something to her colleague in French raising her arms gesturing in a inpatient way. Alright, I understand that it is their prerogative to say no but they didn't need to do it in such an indignant and arrogant way, with not compassion or kindness. It has been tough navigating our daughter's many food allergies, especially when we travel. We have to go to specific restaurants to make sure she doesn't get sick from eating certain foods. We spend a lot of money trying to work around her food allergies and for this store to ask us to pay unnecessary amount just to accommodate to allergies is a little callous. Had they seem understanding or empathetic in some way or tried to work around their policy ie ask us to pay for the extra container, I would have walked away feeling different. Out of all the many ice cream shops we have been to all around the world, all have been kind enough to understand and make an exception because they understand that if we could, we would share the three scoops of ice cream if we could but can't. All of these shops accommodated to scooping my daughter's ice cream to a separate cup. I think what bothered me the most was they just didn't give a damn. They made it seem like we were the ones who were cheap who didn't want to pay. We walked 45 minutes just to get their ice cream and our little girl was so excited. It's a shame we won't ever be coming back here. On a positive note, we went to amarino ice cream shop right across and they were super kind and offered to separate our ice cream as if it was no big deal. One visit here simply wasn't enough during our trip to Paris! Our first taste of Berthillon had us craving more and we had to go a second time to make sure we tried all the flavors that we wanted. When we first walked up to Berthillon, the line was long but that's how we knew we had found the right place. There were so many people walking up and down the street with this delicious gelato. I ordered a double scoop in a cone with the raspberry and pistachio flavors. While the scoops are definitely not as big as you would get in the United States, the amount of flavor packed into each one makes it all worth it. I loved both flavors so much! And then I had to go back a second time to try the Pineapple Basil, because that is not a flavor combination that we see very often. I also really enjoyed the Salted Caramel flavor that my husband ordered. While it can be a little on the expensive side, if you are visiting for vacation then I definitely think it is worth the splurge! read more

Loved this place! Found it via yelp and so glad I did. I'm always on the hunt for good dessert, especially when traveling abroad. Note: Berthillon has a few location on the same street. The main one is sort of like a separated space with a sitting tea room (where you can still get all the ice cream you want) and then a walk-in ice cream spot right next door. They also have a few smaller kiosk type spots in the same street so if you want to keep trying different flavors every two minutes, you definitely could. I tried the coffee and the blackcurrant. The blackcurrant was sooooo good. Definitely recommend it. To be honest though, everything was really good. Just good quality, and worth the price (which isn't cheap but not outrageous considering the city and the location). The chocolate with candied oranges was unpleasantly bitter and stringy and the fig was overpoweringly sweet. For two very meager scoops in a cup, you're paying over 6 euros, which is just extortionate, considering how many other wonderful ice cream places there are in the city. Another major turn off for me was that when I arrived, about 15 minutes before closing time, someone was already doing the shut down cleaning routine, and wiping the counters and cases with a powerful bleach solution. Best ice cream in the world....?? When I read about Berthillon, I placed it on my must-do list for my Paris trip. As a zealous lover of ice cream, I was so excited, but was unfortunately let down. I tried their dark chocolate, salted caramel, and wild strawberry flavors. The flavors were all pretty vibrant, with the dark chocolate being the standout. It was truly an intense dark chocolate without being bitter at all. Texture wise, I've had better. Perhaps it's because they are not very busy in the winter months, but the ice cream had chunks of ice crystals that had formed that took away from the texture. I also prefer my ice cream to be a little more dense while their's was softer and started melting immediately, even though it was just around 4 degrees C that day. The scoops are rather small for what you're paying for, but I think they are just the right size to satisfy you since their flavors are more intense. As for service, the lady who helped me was very rude and unfriendly, but there was another lady who helped my boyfriend who was really pleasant. We hurried out of there since the lady I was dealing with seemed like she was just not having it with any type of tourists that day. Though good, their ice cream wasn't phenomenal and was pretty overhyped in my opinion. I ordered one scoop the vanilla bean ice cream which was €3.50. I have to admit that I was a bit throw off by the flavor and texture of the ice cream, as different from what I expected coming from American. The difference was quite pleasant. We got there yesterday evening and there was almost no line. Scoops and cones are small, but that's actually nice sometimes. Our toddler got a chocolate, which mostly ended up on her face and shirt. One of us got a tiramisu, which tasted good, but had too much alcohol in it for our liking. The other got a scoop of the strawberry (recommended by the scooper as the best one) and coconut. The coconut actually ended up being our favorite. By all means, go here, it's good, but put it this way: we would have been pissed as hell if we had had to wait in line. read more
