It was a spontaneous move, but stopped at Berthillon as I waiting for my cab. The place itself was already closed but we just had gelato at the window. Based on many reviews I decided to quickly try their gelato and it was quite delicious! Though the portions are somewhat small- I think that's the normal size here in Paris. Best ice cream I have every tasted in my life. I never realized what I was missing out on in life until I tried Berthillon. I love ice cream but this place ranks number one now. Their menu has a wide selection to choose from. I chose the banana ice cream and the passion fruit sorbet. Both were heavenly. I can't explain what makes their ice cream so magical but it is. This Berthillon is the OG shop I believe, so lines are always insanely long. If you're really into Berthillon, I would recommend finding a reseller (there are tons of them in Paris) and just getting the same ice cream there. I waited in line for about 20 min. It seemed to move fairly slowly even though when I eventually got up, I placed my order and got it fairly quickly. I got a small cone with yuzu yogurt and melon as flavors; they have about 20 available options. The portion size was quite small for a 4.80 euro cone. I found the flavors to be fairly delicious and tasty, but am not sure I'm feeling the whole "best ice cream in Paris" vibe. Maybe it's just because I decided to get some more sorbet like flavors rather than traditional ice cream flavors, but I found it to be very good ice cream, but not sure about the best ice cream I've ever had. read more

I swear, France has the most amazing ice cream! If it is your first time in Paris, you MUST stop by Berthillon. Seriously. I had heard great things about Berthillon through some locals and I also knew that Anthony Bourdain was a fan. Well, that sealed the deal for me! Since we were already visiting the Notre Dame Cathedral and shopping, it wasn't too hard to find this place. Especially since there was a bit of a line out front, which was to be expected. (Yup, there is even a line when it's still cold in France.) It's a cute shop! I noticed there was seating inside but we just ended up taking our treats with us. I ordered a double scoop of the framboise (raspberry) sorbet and oh boy, it was just wonderful! Sweet, tart and COLD. Brr! I just love eating ice cream when it's freezing outside! Rather than taking our ice cream to-go, we opted to dine inside the restaurant. Hubby had coffee ice cream and I had an affogato. The espresso was strong & complemented the ice cream nicely. It was a nice midday treat although I wouldn't go out of my way to Ile de St. Louis again for their frozen delights. Actually, this entire side of Paris was blessed with ice cream & gelato shops. The flavors are not overwhelming and are the perfect sweetness. The thing that makes this stand out is it's texture. It's icy but smooth. It does not have that over frozen icy texture that can be gritty and grainy. Every bite has the freshly made feeling. It's so smooth that it melts on your tongue and coats your throat on a hot day. Best ice cream ever! I don't think I've ever been more in love with a dessert. It's 4.50 euros for two smallish scoops, but it's worth every bite. List of flavors I've tried from favorite to least: Savory- creamy, intense, and nutty! 1) Honey nougat - I first came during off peak hours and so I had time to ask for the cashier's recommendation. She told me that the honey nougat was very popular, and so I decided to get it. No regrets! Such a great decision. Not exactly sure what a nougat is still, but it was good. 2) Salted butter caramel - Definitely the most intense flavor! My boyfriend didn't like it at all, because it was "too salty", but I enjoyed it. If you're usually not a fan of salted butter flavors, don't get this. 3) Pistachio - Really close to make 2nd on my list, but I liked the intensity of the salted butter caramel more. This is the best pistachio ice cream I've ever had though! If you're looking for a lighter nutty ice cream, I highly recommend this one! 4) 60 ans - This wasn't as intense as the other flavors, because the base is vanilla with some hints of fruit. Definitely wouldn't recommend this over the other ones. Fruity - all of these flavors tasted as if I was eating the actual fruit! We were on vacation from the US and were only in Paris for a few days and Berthillon was closed until Wednesday afternoon as they were out for their summer break, and then after that was open irregular hours. The people at the cashier want to close the store 30 minutes before it actually says closes. It's impossible to plan your vacation around one little ice cream shop's hours when you're only in a city for a few days and don't know when you'll be coming back. I've literally tried to give you guys my money 3 times and you made it impossible to take to give it. you also don't care that customers are inconvenienced by your hours and shrug your shoulders at us. We went following Lucas recommendation - our Munich "ice cream crack" - and found that the ice cream really is very good. My "trial scoop" always is pistachio, as I love it, and find that it seems hard to produce non-artificial tasting pistachio. This one really was excellent, creamy, with a nice nutty flavour, and actual pistachio-pieces in the ice cream.. I had dark chocolate, too, which looked like the dark, molten centre of fondant au chocolat, and tasted like it, too.. My husband went for "fruits of the forest", which was lovely and more like a sorbet- and just when I said that it tasted like the small, wild strawberries that you hardly find anymore, one after the other appeared in his scoop. The vanilla was creamy and you could definitely taste the individual grains of the vanilla beans. The chocolate was rich, dark, and smooth. Peche Sorbet [2.50 Euros = $3.21] Peach sorbet, cone I went with a lighter touch and opted for peach sorbet. It was sweet, tart, and nicely grainy with real fruit pieces within. Wow, the line here is ridonkulous!! The funny thing is it sort of reminds me of New York City's 53rd and 6th Chicken and Rice because there's a gazillion places around the island called Berthillon as well, so you run into an issue of which one is the original / authentic one? Anyway, I think we went to the real one (they probably all taste the same...), and I got 2 scoops - bottom scoop as salted butter caramel and the top being extra bittersweet cacao. Gelato here is extremely creamy and rich, and the flavoring was very intense - it was so intense that the chocolate flavor actually prevented me from really tasting the salted butter caramel =(. Maybe I should've gotten the chocolate flavor on the bottom - regardless, the bittersweet chocolate was very yummy and I was really impressed how infused and rich it was! It had just the right tint of sweetness, and it actually made the waffle cone taste all the better because the cone provided a refreshing tamer flavor, while the crunchy texture contrasted really well with the ultra smooth gelato. I've heard great things about the fruity flavors as well, so if you're into that, definitely check it out! I don't know if the flavor changes, but when I tried it, it was a mix of pecan, dates, nuts, red beet sorbet and flowers of the Provence. Absolutely delicious and way more exciting than any of the non-vegan ice cream flavors they offer (if I may offer my totally biased opinion). Fantastic, cozy, classy place with outside seating.
