The list of fruit picking days is online and so, we purchased both picked and self selected fruit from this stand. The plants are healthy, the location is a hidden gem and the prices are reasonable.

I spent the better part of a day recently, along with dear friend Sin City Farm Girl (SCFG), her…read moreYoung 'Un and the NMT. We were looking for a day of play, a tricky thing with a Moody Teen and his sidekick, and one that did not cost an arm and a leg. SCFG suggested Savidge, which is near their farm, so off we went. You can tell the place has been doing this for a while, as they had everything well laid out - from parking to activities to shopping. They also had a nice mix of free activities (such as a 'sandbox' full of dried corn that the kids spent over an hour playing happily in) and low- cost activities, the most expensive being $3 for a hayride to a pick-your-own pumpkin patch (cost of pumpkin you pick extra, weighed upon your return). There was mini-golf, shooting plastic balls in air cannons at targets, climbing on farm equipment repurposed as play gyms, going to see and pet baby goats, cow, piglets and see the emu, and of course the decently challenging but not impossible corn maze. Four and a half hours flew by, as the kids went from place to place. They even enjoyed a visit from some of the free-range hens who helpfully picked up any crumbs dropped around the outdoor picnic tables. Food options are as you'd expect - drinks (top price $1.50 for cold bottled water), chips, hot dogs (also $1.50). What I liked was the reasonableness of the items while still allowing the place to make a profit, not the price gouging we see at other farm operations we've been to. As for shopping - they have a beautiful selection of mums, very reasonably priced, and they have some (not an abundance, and again, not overly expensive) other food items like pickled hot peppers, etc. along with a variety of grown-on-site pumpkins, gourds, dried corn and corn stalks. Everyone who worked there was friendly, helpful and patient. We had a relaxing but entertaining day that did not break the bank, and came home with two exhausted and content boys. I have a feeling this place gets nuts in October, so go early in the season unless you don't mind big crowds. Definitely will go back again next year.

We got a guided tour and were introduced to the farm animals with their names and some back stories on them. I fell in love with the two Great Pyrenees dogs and the 41 year old horse! Comfortable bed, also enjoyed farm-made ice cream on the porch in a rocking chair. In the morning, watched the cows and goats be milked took a nice walk through the path in the woods and revisited the animals before having an amazing breakfast of delicious bacon, eggs and potatoes, made special by Kathleen. Didn't leave empty handed either. Took home some great cheeses, that were also made on the farm. Would definitely stay again!

Kathy was gracious about our arriving late (farmers wake up early!) due to traffic. My husband, two kids (7 and 11) and I slept in a cute room with a deck. We woke up to a rooster and were ready to begin our chores bright and early! Sam was kind and patient when showing us how to milk goats, and Mike let us help bottle feed a brand new baby calf. We even got to take the calf on a walk with a leash! What a wonderful experience for kids! My daughter got to help tend to chickens, and gather and clean eggs. The animals are very well cared for and friendly. The farmhouse is renovated for modern comfort but still has an old-time country feel--perfect combo. P.S. The bathroom has a jacuzzi! Kathy is a lovely host -- she kept us well fed. Breakfast each morning consisted of homemade muffins, scones, breads, yogurt, kefir, smoothies, butter, with farm fresh eggs. She made wonderful pancakes, bacon, and potatoes too. I got to take a cheesemaking class -- depending on how much time you have, Kathy offers shorter classes and longer classes. I couldn't get enough of the delicious raw milk and yogurt (we don't have access to this stuff in NYC). I raided the store before we left. I recommend the goat manchego!

It's clear how much she and her husband, Ben love and care for every single animal there. The hands-on experience was the highlight for me. I loved getting to feed the gentle horses, alpacas, pigs, goats, donkeys, turkeys, peacocks, sheep and more. The personal interaction with the animals was amazing. The animals seemed happy, healthy, and very used to human interaction, which speaks volumes about the ranch's welfare standards. Not only did I get to help with the animal chores, Kathryn is also very environmentally conscious as we composted, recycled or re-purposed everything at the ranch. It was a joy helping and I highly recommend making an appointment for an experience. It is also a great place to volunteer if you love animals, Kathryn is a remarkable woman. Kathryn not only loves the animals, she is knowledgeable and kind. I learned so much about the different rescue animals and the conservation efforts the ranch supports. The entire property is beautiful with spectacular views. If you're an animal lover or looking for a unique, educational day trip with the family, I cannot recommend Gress Mountain Ranch enough. It's more than just a ranch; it's a truly special place where you can connect with nature and wonderful creatures. I am now a steady volunteer, I encourage you to plan a visit!
